Recently, CO2 recycling for the production of valuable microalgae has acquired substantial interest. Most studies investigating CO2 conversion efficiency in algal cultures were based on single species, although a stabilising effect of algal diversity on biomass production was recently highlighted. However, addition of CO2 into polyalgal cultures requires a careful control of pH; performance of CO2 conversion, growth and carbon biomass production are affected by pH differently, depending on the species of microalgae. This study investigates the efficiency of CO2 conversion by natural marine algal assemblage cultivated in open, land-based raceways (4.5 m3, 10 m2), working as high rate algal ponds (HRAP). Ponds were enriched with nitrogen and phosphate, pure... |

This study deals with rearing methods, growth and mortality performances, and problems encountered by the oyster farmers from Quiberon Bay (2800 ha of leases) : it relies on a survey achieved in july 2001, about 18 oyster farmers, and 2 diving campaigns (july and october 2001) on 2 years old oyster batches from the same farmers. The analysed enterprises vary in particular by the location and depth of their concession inside the bay, but also by their rearing scheme : a majority favours seedings with 18 month old oysters or more, according to prices and availability of oysters supplies. The duration until marketable size and mean mortalities seem to have increased since a preceding inquiry in 1986. The main constraint, affecting priorly the south border... |

Several studies focused on wastewater treatment in High Rate Algal Ponds (HRAP) suggest that highly variable climatic conditions cause large variations of microalgal biomass productivity. In the present study, we show that similar carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies were reached in different HRAPs treating urban wastewaters located in two different temperate (Mediterranean and oceanic) climates. Furthermore, similar ecological successions were observed in these HRAPs. During the start-up phase, the consumption of organic matter by detritivores, already present in the wastewater, appears to be necessary for the microalgae to grow within two weeks in spring. The growth of the rapid-growing species, Chlorella sp., followed by the... |

Several polyphagous arthropod predators are commercially available for augmentative biological control targeting mite and insect pests in a variety of cropping systems. A number of these predators are not native to the area of release. The current paper discusses benefits and risks of using exotic generalist predators as biocontrol agents. The fact that polyphagous predators are easily reared on unnatural foods and can be used against different pest species makes them attractive for commercialization. Polyphagous or facultatively phytophagous predators have less difficulty in maintaining their populations at low prey densities and can sometimes be introduced in the crop before the target pest is present, thus preventing the buildup of pest populations... |

We examined the diet of 4 annual fishes, Austrolebias viarius, Austrolebias cheradophilus, Austrolebias luteoflammulatus and Cynopoecilus melanotaenia inhabiting temporal ponds of southeastern Uruguay, by analysis of stomach contents. Fishes were captured from fifty ephemeral ponds of Castillos Lagoon basin, in the region of the Humedales del Este. We identified 13099 individual prey items extracted from 669 stomachs of the four captured species. In the studied system, annual killifishes represents the most abundant and conspicuous top predators. Killifishes are generalist key predators at the ephemeral ponds of the studied system, consuming mostly aquatic items. Zooplancton represented the bulk of the diet in the four analyzed species, followed by eggs,... |

Recent range extensions of the invasive rapa whelk Rapana venosa, biological data of the population and possible ecological impacts on the food webs of the Rio de la Plata estuary are presented. A total of 41 rapa whelks and 21 egg capsules were collected between February 2004 and March 2006. Specimens were found all over the mixohaline waters of the estuary, with records off Montevideo, Samborombon Bay and off Punta Rasa. Specimens ranged between 28 and 120 mm shell length. Almost all R. venosa presented epibionts all over the shell, suggesting an exposed lifestyle. Egg-masses were attached to specimens of R. venosa, debris and plastic garbage. The spatial distribution of R. venosa within the estuary was coupled with the spatial distribution of Mactra... |

An update of the knowledge on the three most important ommastrephid species that inhabit the SW Atlantic: Illex argentinus, Martialia hyadesi and Ommastrephes bartramii, is presented. Up to the moment, only I.argentinus was intensively studied. Its distribution, population structure, reproduction, growth and paralarval development are analyzed, togheter with other aspects of its biology, such as feeding, predators and parasites. Also its utilization for human consmption is considered. Regarding M.hyadesi and O.bartrami, information on their distribution and biology is presented. |
