Biological control of phytophagous arthropods in the physic nut tree Jatropha curcas L. in Brazil Agronomy
Fernandes, Flávio Lemes; Fernandes, Maria Elisa de Sena; Lopes, Elisângela Novais; Venzon, Madelaine; Diniz, Juno Ferreira da Silva; Dias, Luis Antônio dos Santos.
Jatropha curcas has a high biofuel oil content, which could replace polluting fuels, and has great potential for large scale monoculture cultivation in the conventional system. We explored the occurrence, spatial distribution and the functional response of the main phytophagous species of this plant and their natural enemies to explore the potential for conservative biological control. We began sampling phytophagous species and predators when J. curcas plants were six months old. The most common species of phytophagous insects were nymphs and adults of Empoasca kraemeri, followed by Frankliniella schultzei and Myzus persicae. Among the predators, Ricoseius loxocheles, Iphiseioides zuluagai, Araneidae, larvae and adults of Psyllobora vigintimaculata and...

Distance from the edge of forest fragments influence the abundance of aphidophagous hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) in wheat fields Agronomy
Bortolotto, Orcial Ceolin; Menezes Junior, Ayres de Oliveira; Hoshino, Adriano Thibes; Campos, Thiago Augusto.
This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the distance from the edge of native forests on the abundance of aphidophagous hoverflies in wheat fields. The study was conducted in four commercial fields in the North of Paraná State, Brazil, during the wheat crop season of 2009. Two transects were surveyed parallel to the edge of the forest at two distances: 25 (“near”) and 525 meters (“far”) from the edge. The abundance of hoverflies was compared using a χ2 test (p ≤ 0.05). In total, 1,845 hoverflies adults were collected, which represented 15 species and three genera. The most abundant species was Allograpta exotica (60.43%), followed by Toxomerus dispar (17.78%) and Toxomerus watsoni (7.26%) (Diptera: Syrphidae). An important inference was that all...

Potential of Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Astigmata: Acaridae) for the Biological Control of Lasioderma serricorne (F.) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) BABT
Canevari,Glauco da Cruz; Rezende,Fernanda; Silva,Rafael Braga da; Faroni,Lêda Rita D'Antonino; Zanuncio,José Cola; Papadopoulou,Smaro; Serrão,José Eduardo.
This work investigated the potential of Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Astigmata: Acaridae) to control Lasioderma serricorne (F.) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) in the laboratory. L. serricorne is the most destructive insect pest ever found on stored tobacco. The experimental delineation had 33 arenas being each experimental unit with 11 arenas of experiments with eggs, larva of L. serricorne with the density of T. putrescentiae maintained constant, where from 11 of these arenas, eight were for the analysis of predation and three to evaluate the natural mortality of the insect. The highest predation rate was found during the larval stage with, approximately, 54, 68 and 78% mortality of L. serricorne from the fourth until the sixty day of predation. These...

Impact of integrated pest management on the population of leafminers, fruit borers, and natural enemies in tomato Ciência Rural
Miranda,Moacyr Mascarenhas Motta; Picanço,Marcelo Coutinho; Zanuncio,José Cola; Bacci,Leandro; Silva,Ézio Marques da.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of integrated pest management (IPM) in the productivity of the tomato and in the populations of leafminers, fruit borers, and natural enemies in tomato crops. The treatments were calendar (spraying twice weekly with insecticides and fungicides), IPM (spraying when action thresholds were achieved), and control (no pesticide was applied). IPM was the most efficient system of pest control due to presenting similar productivity and 65.6% less pesticide applications than in the calendar. The attack of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) and Liriomyza spp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae) to the leaves only achieved the action threshold in the final phase of the cultivation. The main fruit borer was...

Importance of ecological interactions during wastewater treatment using High Rate Algal Ponds under different temperate climates ArchiMer

Several studies focused on wastewater treatment in High Rate Algal Ponds (HRAP) suggest that highly variable climatic conditions cause large variations of microalgal biomass productivity. In the present study, we show that similar carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies were reached in different HRAPs treating urban wastewaters located in two different temperate (Mediterranean and oceanic) climates. Furthermore, similar ecological successions were observed in these HRAPs. During the start-up phase, the consumption of organic matter by detritivores, already present in the wastewater, appears to be necessary for the microalgae to grow within two weeks in spring. The growth of the rapid-growing species, Chlorella sp., followed by the...

Factors affecting bacterial biomass and growth in the Duplin River estuary and coastal Atlantic Ocean. ArchiMer
Fallon, R; Newell, S; Sherr, B; Sheer, E.
Bacterial numbers and growth rates were measured in coastal, planktonic systems of the Western Atlantic ocean. Seasonal responses in growth rates of the bacterial assemblage were present at some sites, but these may be related to seasonal changes in substrate supply rather than to changes in temperature. Bacterial growth rates tended to decline with increasing distance from shore. There was evidence for predator-prey population cycles in the bacteria and < 17 mu m protozoa in the Duplin River Estuary which may indicate that the bacterial assemblage serves as prey for protozoan populations. In summer, a significant negative correlation between mu (instantaneous growth rate) and cell numbers in the bacterial assemblage indicated that substrate limitation...

Control of the pH for marine microalgae polycultures: A key point for CO2 fixation improvement in intensive cultures ArchiMer

Recently, CO2 recycling for the production of valuable microalgae has acquired substantial interest. Most studies investigating CO2 conversion efficiency in algal cultures were based on single species, although a stabilising effect of algal diversity on biomass production was recently highlighted. However, addition of CO2 into polyalgal cultures requires a careful control of pH; performance of CO2 conversion, growth and carbon biomass production are affected by pH differently, depending on the species of microalgae. This study investigates the efficiency of CO2 conversion by natural marine algal assemblage cultivated in open, land-based raceways (4.5 m3, 10 m2), working as high rate algal ponds (HRAP). Ponds were enriched with nitrogen and phosphate, pure...

This study deals with rearing methods, growth and mortality performances, and problems encountered by the oyster farmers from Quiberon Bay (2800 ha of leases) : it relies on a survey achieved in july 2001, about 18 oyster farmers, and 2 diving campaigns (july and october 2001) on 2 years old oyster batches from the same farmers. The analysed enterprises vary in particular by the location and depth of their concession inside the bay, but also by their rearing scheme : a majority favours seedings with 18 month old oysters or more, according to prices and availability of oysters supplies. The duration until marketable size and mean mortalities seem to have increased since a preceding inquiry in 1986. The main constraint, affecting priorly the south border...

Dark clouds and their silver linings: exotic generalist predators in augmentative biological control Neotropical Entomology
CLERCQ,PATRICK DE.
Several polyphagous arthropod predators are commercially available for augmentative biological control targeting mite and insect pests in a variety of cropping systems. A number of these predators are not native to the area of release. The current paper discusses benefits and risks of using exotic generalist predators as biocontrol agents. The fact that polyphagous predators are easily reared on unnatural foods and can be used against different pest species makes them attractive for commercialization. Polyphagous or facultatively phytophagous predators have less difficulty in maintaining their populations at low prey densities and can sometimes be introduced in the crop before the target pest is present, thus preventing the buildup of pest populations...

Diet of four annual killifishes: an intra and interspecific comparison Neotropical Ichthyology
Laufer,Gabriel; Arim,Matías; Loureiro,Marcelo; Piñeiro-Guerra,Juan Manuel; Clavijo-Baquet,Sabrina; Fagúndez,César.
We examined the diet of 4 annual fishes, Austrolebias viarius, Austrolebias cheradophilus, Austrolebias luteoflammulatus and Cynopoecilus melanotaenia inhabiting temporal ponds of southeastern Uruguay, by analysis of stomach contents. Fishes were captured from fifty ephemeral ponds of Castillos Lagoon basin, in the region of the Humedales del Este. We identified 13099 individual prey items extracted from 669 stomachs of the four captured species. In the studied system, annual killifishes represents the most abundant and conspicuous top predators. Killifishes are generalist key predators at the ephemeral ponds of the studied system, consuming mostly aquatic items. Zooplancton represented the bulk of the diet in the four analyzed species, followed by eggs,...
