A review on macrobenthic trophic relationships along subtropical sandy shores in southernmost Brazil Biota Neotropica
Pinotti,Raphael Mathias; Minasi,Diogo Marroni; Colling,Leonir André; Bemvenuti,Carlos Emílio.
Main trophic relationships that occur along the exposed sandy shores in southernmost Brazil (∼33° S) are established taking into account several biological compartments operating at morphodynamically distinct environments. Beaches are predominantly of the intermediate type but some stretches of coastline are truly dissipative (Cassino Beach) or tending-to-reflective (Concheiros Beach), presenting thus diverse biological compartments and inhabitant macrobenthic assemblages. Dense concentrations of the surf-zone diatom Asterionellopsis glacialis are responsible - at least for the intermediate shorelines - for the most year-round primary production, sustaining several consumers up to tertiary level. Among them, bivalves Amarilladesma mactroides, Donax...

Microphytobenthic primary production, biomass, nutrients and pollutants of Santos Estuary (24ºS, 46º20'W). São Paulo, Brazil BABT
Sousa,Eduinetty Ceci Pereira Moreira de; Tommasi,Luiz Roberto; David,Carlos João.
The present study aimed to evaluate the seasonal variation of microphytobenthic biomass and its primary production in the intertidal zone in Santos Estuary (São Paulo, Brazil). This estuary is on the tropical region and it is regarded as a polluted area. The samples were collected at 3 sites, and environmental parameters, nutrients and heavy metals were analyzed. The primary production was evaluated according to GRφNTVED (1960) method whereas chlorophyll a and phaeopigment a were estimated by TETT et al. (1975) method. Total nitrogen K ranged from 20.0 to 115.0 µg·g-1 while total phosphate ranged from 26.0 to 223.0 µg·g-1. No significant seasonal variation of benthic primary production or chlorophyll a and phaeopigment a were observed. Significant positive...

Short-term changes and longitudinal distribution of carbon metabolism in the Piauí River estuary (Sergipe, Brazil) BJB
SOUZA,M. F. L. de; COUTO,E. C. G..
Net pelagic metabolism (NPM) and net ecosystem metabolism (NEM) were assessed by sigmaCO2 changes in three sampling stations along Piauí River estuary. At the upper estuary station, sampling was carried out over 48 h. Samples exhibited high DIN:DIP ratios. Chlorophyll-a ranged from 0.2 to 2.5 mug.l-1, being higher at the upper estuarine station than marine ones. Net pelagic metabolic rates ranged from -13.2 to 61.2 mgC.m7-2.d-1. Presence of mucilaginous algal material can explain the net mineralization. In the photic period, NPM ranged from-0.05 to 3.04 mgC.m-2h-1. NEM ranged from -7.77 to 6.65 mgC.m-2.d-1. Bottom ressuspension due to microphytobenthic flotation and a high turbidity plume inside de estuary reflected in negative metabolic rates...

Relationship between phytoplankton and bacterioplankton production in vegetated humic shallow lakes Ecología austral
Aguilar Zurita,Alex; Rodríguez,Patricia.
In this study, we show that depth-integrated pelagic primary production (PP) can exceed bacterioplankton production (BP) in vegetated humic shallow lakes, giving as a result an autotrophic water column, despite light restrictions and availability of organic carbon for lake bacteria. Intuitively, these conditions should favor the development of a heterotrophic water column. Instead, during our survey, BP represented between 1.3 to 5% of PP most of the time. Only once, during late summer, BP was ~71% of PP. Although we cannot conclude about the mechanisms behind the observed results, previous surveys and experimentation in the wetland allow us to hypothesize that autotrophic conditions were favored by: i) the shallow nature of the lakes, which compensates...

MULTISPECTRAL TRACKING OF PHYTOPLANKTON IN THE COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN Gayana
Ojeda Caicedo,V. V.; Plata Gómez,A..
In a quantitative research study, the concentration and circulation of group of micro-organisms "phytoplankton" have been found trough the images of the ocean colour in the Colombian Caribbean Sea. These images have been observed trough the Sea Star satellite. The method logical procedure was to collect a number of ocean images at the 1A level of the sensor SeaWifs. This only covered the geographical area of study and the seasons of the year. The selection criterion was to give priority to the absence of clouds in the area. Afterwards, the images were analyzed to create mosaics in convenient periods of the to, in turn visualize the periodical changes of the micro-organisms. Thus place with higher concentration of phytoplankton in the study site were...

IBSS Repository

IBSS Repository

IBSS Repository

Photosynthetic characteristics of phytoplankton in the western Black Sea during the autumn bloom. IBSS Repository
Finenko, Z. Z.; Churilova, T. Ya.; Parkhomenko, A. V.; Tugrul, S..
In the autumn of 2005 photosynthetic characteristics of phytoplankton were studied along transects from a coast to deep-waters in the western and southern Black Sea. Efficiency of photosynthesis (αB) varied from 0.012 to 0.068 mg C (mg Chl)-1h-1(μE m-2 s-1)-1. Light – saturated rate of chlorophyll a-normalized photosynthesis (P) ranged from 5 mg C (mg Chl)-1 h-1 in the deep-waters to 12 mg C (mg Chl)-1 h-1 in the shelf waters. In the shelf area P and αB varied by a factor of 3. Variability of these parameters was as lower as that of the chlorophyll concentration. The mean αB and P values at the shelf were higher than those of the deep-water region. The phodoadaptive strategy of phytoplankton was characterized by increasing of αB at lower light levels....

SeaWiFS. IBSS Repository

Primary production and bacterioplankton dynamics in the Black Sea during the cold season. IBSS Repository
Sorokin, Yu. I.; Sorokina, O. V..
Phytoplankton primary production, bacterioplankton abundance, chemosynthesis rate and the total bacterioplankton production were measured in the Black Sea during the cold season from early February to April 1991. Primary production was found at its seasonal maximum, which corresponded to the winter – early spring diatom bloom. Photosynthesis rate at the surface varied between 20 and 120 mg C m-3 d-1, with the maxima in the central cyclonic eddies. Integrated primary production in the water column ranged between 0.4 and 1.2. g C m-2 d-1 in the central eddies and between 0.2 g and 0.4 g C m-2 d-1 at their margins. The whole basin annual production was assessed at 80 х 106 t C y-1. Bacterioplankton abundance ranged between 0.8 and 1.1 х 106 cells ml-1 in the...

How to provide scientific advice for ecosystem-based management now ArchiMer
Trenkel, Verena.
n this paper, I argue that we have at hand what is needed to provide scientific advice for ecosystem-based management of small pelagics and other species groups now. The ingredients for this advice are (i) large marine ecosystems as spatial management units; (ii) maintaining ecosystem productivity and exploiting at multispecies maximum yield as overarching management objectives; (iii) assessment of ecosystems by evaluating changes in primary productivity; (iv) an operational management procedure in which single-species catch proposals are adjusted to ecosystem productivity using a set of control rules. Inspection of historic landings for small pelagics and other small species in the Northeast Atlantic (ICES area) reveals that most likely fisheries...

Trophic relationships between benthic or planktonic microphytes and infaunal bivalve molluscs ArchiMer
Plantecuny, M; Bodoy, Alain.
In order to estimate energetic relationship, microphytic and benthic bivalve levels of a shallow (1.5 m), sandy ecosystem near Marseille (Gulf of Fos, Southern France) were sampled monthly during 1.5 year, in two sites differing by their wave exposure. In the sheltered area, the bivalve Ruditapes decussatus was the dominant species, while another bivalve, Donax trunculus , was found in the open, wave exposed site. Chlorophyll a and primary production of the phytoplankton and the microphytobenthos, as well as population dynamic, growth and biochemical composition of bivalves (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) were monitored.

The primary production (phytoplankton and microphytobenthos) of a coastaL shallow water ecosystem (0.5 m) was investigated in two sandy areas, differing by their wave exposure. The physical and chemical parameters, the functional chlorophyll and pheopigments as well as the primary production were measured monthly, throughout a two-year study. The bivalve Ruditapes decussatus was the dominant species in the sheltered station (RD), whereas Donax trlmcu/us inhabited the other station (DT) which was exposed to the open-sea waves. Microphytic biomasses were determined after extracting chlorophyll a and pheopigments in 90% acetone. by spectrophotometric measurements before and after acidification. Gross hourly primary production was estimated by measuring the...

Hoch, Thierry.
This paper deals with a model of the pelagic ecosystem in the English Channel The model takes into account nitrogen biogeochemical cycle explicitly and indirectly phosphorus, silicon and carbon ones. The pelagic ecosystem is described precisely, on the one hand with the help of three phytoplanktonic compartments, and the other by considering the microbial food web. Primary production appears to be mainly controlled by stratification and turbidity, except in the Bay of Seine where high terrestrial nutrient inputs generate a sharp enrichment. Moreover, the model allows some general ecological conclusions to be drawn. From the simulation, it appears that inorganic nitrogen in the water column is mainly produced by an intense recycling. In accordance with in...

Ocean acidification with (de)eutrophication will alter future phytoplankton growth and succession ArchiMer
Flynn, Kevin J.; Clark, Darren R.; Mitra, Aditee; Fabian, Heiner; Hansen, Per J.; Glibert, Patricia M.; Wheeler, Glen L.; Stoecker, Diane K.; Blackford, Jerry C.; Brownlee, Colin.
Human activity causes ocean acidification (OA) though the dissolution of anthropogenically generated CO2 into seawater, and eutrophication through the addition of inorganic nutrients. Eutrophication increases the phytoplankton biomass that can be supported during a bloom, and the resultant uptake of dissolved inorganic carbon during photosynthesis increases water-column pH (bloom-induced basification). This increased pH can adversely affect plankton growth. With OA, basification commences at a lower pH. Using experimental analyses of the growth of three contrasting phytoplankton under different pH scenarios, coupled with mathematical models describing growth and death as functions of pH and nutrient status, we show how different conditions of pH modify the...

ArchiMer
Struski, Caroline.
To answer the questions of trophic capacity of the oyster bay of Marennes- Oléron, models were implemented since the 90s. The dynamics of the system is studied here by using a model 2D of hydrodynamism and transport with fine meshes (SiAM2D). The modelling and the analysis of existing data are used to answer the following questions: which factors control the primary production in the bay, in which scales of time act these factors, which link exists between pelagic and microphytobenthic productions , and which is the impact of oysters on the planctonic compartment SiAM2D serves as tool to couple models of pelagic and microphytobenthic primary production, and of filtration by oysters. The model of pelagic production is calibrated from measures of...

Napoleon, Camille; Fiant, Liliane; Raimbault, Virginie; Riou, Philippe; Claquin, Pascal.
The dynamics of the phytoplankton assemblage, the physical, chemical and biological parameters, and primary productivity and production were monitored in the central English Channel along a transect between Ouistreham and Portsmouth from January to December 2010. The spatial patterns of the phytoplankton assemblage were controlled by the hydrological characteristics of the water masses, and the annual structure of the phytoplankton assemblage was characteristic of the central English Channel and was controlled by seasonality. The spring bloom was dominated by a single species, Chaetoceros socialis, and associated with low microphytoplankton evenness and Shannon-Wiener indices, whereas the evenness index was high from late spring to winter and associated...

Ocean warming can modify the ecophysiology and distribution of marine organisms, and relationships between species, with nonlinear interactions between ecosystem components potentially resulting in trophic amplification. Trophic amplification (or attenuation) describe the propagation of a hydroclimatic signal up the food web, causing magnification (or depression) of biomass values along one or more trophic pathways. We have employed 3-D coupled physical-biogeochemical models to explore ecosystem responses to climate change with a focus on trophic amplification. The response of phytoplankton and zooplankton to global climate-change projections, carried out with the IPSL Earth System Model by the end of the century, is analysed at global and regional basis,...
