Study of testacean assemblages (Protozoa: Rhizopoda) in touristic waterfall regions of Chapada dos Guimarães National Park, Mato Grosso State, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v32i4.7456 Biological Sciences
Oliveira, Márcia Teixeira de; Universidade Federal de Mato Groo; Hardoim, Edna Lopes; Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso.
An evaluation was made of the effect of temporal variations on an assembly of Testaceae in several water bodies located in Chapada dos Guimarães National Park. A sampling point was selected at each study site, where 4 samplings were collected per season, considering the climatic conditions of the dry and rainy periods. The findings revealed 80 infrageneric taxa, 05 families and 12 genera. Pearson’s correlation between the second axis of the DCA and the first axis of the PCA was significant, even after applying Bonferroni’s correction for multiple significance tests (r = 0.683; p = 0.014). Thus, the temporal variation of the limnological data, which showed higher values of turbidity, total solids, color and temperature for the rainy period and higher...

Planktonic heterotrophic nanoflagellate abundance along a trophic gradient in subtropical reservoirs: influence of a bottom-up or top-down control mechanism Biological Sciences
Pereira, Danielle Goeldner; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Rodrigues, Luzia Cleide; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Lansac-Tôha, Fábio Amodêo; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Velho, Luiz Felipe Machado; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
The aim of the current study was to assess the variability in heterotrophic nanoflagellate abundance attributable to variables responsible for the influence of bottom-up and top-down control mechanisms in the plankton food web along a trophic gradient in subtropical reservoirs (Paraná State,Brazil). In particular, we hypothesised that food resources were the main determinant for the abundance of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) along a trophic gradient. Results showed that HNF communities were weakly influenced by the bottom-up mechanism. Moreover, there was evidence of a slight influence from a top-down control mechanism on this community. Therefore, the results of the present study did not corroborate the hypothesis initially proposed, and further...

Flagellate protist abundance in phytotelmata of Aechmea distichantha Lem. (Bromeliaceae) in the upper Paraná river basin - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i4.17134 Biological Sciences
Duarte, Gisele Silva Costa; Alves, Geziele Mucio; Lansac-Tôha, Fernando Miranda; Velho, Luiz Felipe Machado; Lansac-Tôha, Fábio Amodêo.
In some Bromeliaceae species the leaf sheaths form a tank or phytotelma, accumulating water and organic detritus, conditions that allow the establishment of different communities. Thus, this study evaluated the relationship between diameter and volume of water in the tank of the bromeliad Aechmea distichantha Lem. and density of flagellates found in the phytotelmata, as well as the influence of the hydrological periods and proximity of sampled strata on the phytotelma patterns of abundance distribution. Samplings were conducted in two hydrological periods in 2010. In each sampling, four plants were collected from three different strata, classified according to the distance from the river level. A one-way ANOVA identified significant differences in...

Involvement of nitric oxide and its up/down stream molecules in the immunity against parasitic infections BJID
Nahrevanian,Hossein.
Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent mediator with diverse roles in regulating cellular functions and signaling pathways. The NO synthase (NOS) enzyme family consists of three major isoforms, which convey variety of messages between cells, including signals for vasorelaxation, neurotransmission and cytotoxicity. This family of enzymes are generally classified as neuronal NOS (nNOS), endothelial NOS (eNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS). Increased levels of NO are induced from iNOS during infection; while eNOS and nNOS may be produced at the baseline in normal conditions. An association of some key cytokines appears to be essential for NOS gene regulation in the immunity of infections. Accumulating evidence indicates that parasitic diseases are commonly associated with...

Ingestion of a bacterivorous ciliate by the oyster Crassostrea gigas: Protozoa as a trophic link between picoplankton and benthic suspension-feeders ArchiMer
Le Gall, Solange; Bel Hassen, Malika; Le Gall, Pierre.
The linked concepts of 'microbial loop' and 'protozoan trophic link' have been very well documented in filter-feeding microzooplankton such as copepods, but have not been applied to energy transfer to benthic suspension-feeding macrofauna, with the exception of the recent demonstration of heterotrophic flagellate assimilation by mussels. The oyster Crassostrea gigas obtains energy resources by filtering microalgae (similar to 5 to 100 mu m). However, in turbid estuaries, light-limited phytoplanktonic production cannot entirely account for oyster energy requirements. Conversely, picoplankters (<2 mu m), which are main effecters of coastal energy flow and matter cycling, are not efficiently retained by oyster filtration. Ciliate protozoal as both...

Factors affecting bacterial biomass and growth in the Duplin River estuary and coastal Atlantic Ocean. ArchiMer
Fallon, R; Newell, S; Sherr, B; Sheer, E.
Bacterial numbers and growth rates were measured in coastal, planktonic systems of the Western Atlantic ocean. Seasonal responses in growth rates of the bacterial assemblage were present at some sites, but these may be related to seasonal changes in substrate supply rather than to changes in temperature. Bacterial growth rates tended to decline with increasing distance from shore. There was evidence for predator-prey population cycles in the bacteria and < 17 mu m protozoa in the Duplin River Estuary which may indicate that the bacterial assemblage serves as prey for protozoan populations. In summer, a significant negative correlation between mu (instantaneous growth rate) and cell numbers in the bacterial assemblage indicated that substrate limitation...

Release of dissolved amino acids by flagellates and ciliates grazing on bacteria ArchiMer
Ferrier-pages, C; Karner, M; Rassoulzadegan, F.
Release of amino acids was examined in the laboratory in the form of dissolved primary amine (DPA) by two marine planktonic protozoa (the oligotrichous ciliate, Strombidium sulcatum and the aplastidic flagellate Pseudobodo sp.) grazing on bacteria. DPA release rates were high (19-25 x 10(-6) and 1.8-2.3 x 10(-6) mu mol DPA cell(-1) h(-1) for flagellates and ciliates, respectively) during the exponential phase, when the ingestion rates were maximum. Release rates were lower during the other growth phases. The release of DPA accounted for 10 % (flagellates) and 16 % (ciliates) of the total nitrogen ingested. Our data suggest that the release of DPA by protozoa could play an important role in supporting bacterial and consequently autotrophic pico- and...
