2009 PRECISION AGRICULTURAL SERVICES DEALERSHIP SURVEY RESULTS AgEcon

In the spring of 2009, Crop Life magazine and Purdue University’s Center for Food and Agricultural Business conducted a survey of crop input dealers for the 14th consecutive year. In February, a questionnaire was mailed to 2500 Crop Life retail crop input dealership readers across the US. (See Appendix I to this report for a copy of the questionnaire.) A total of 258 questionnaires were returned, with 241 being usable. This provided an effective response rate of 9.6 percent, the lowest response rate in the 14 year history of the project. Productivity and Quality-Environmental Changes in Marketing Co-operatives: An Analysis on the Horticultural Sector AgEcon

The object of the present paper is to analyse productivity incorporating quality-environmental changes in marketing co-operatives. Firstly, it reviews competitiveness factors in the current European agri-food market, especially in relation to the fruit and vegetables sector. Secondly, the productivity trend is studied empirically using nonparametric methods (Malmquist indices) and taking as reference panel data of Andalusian horticultural co-operatives for the period 1994-2001. For this purpose productivity is decomposed into technological change, efficiency and quality-environmental change. Assessing Information Bias and Food Safety AgEcon

Imperfect information can lead to market failure and be an external factor impacting managers of agribusiness firms. A matrix method approach to content analysis was conducted by independent judges based upon established typologies. Food safety articles from consumer publications were examined, and information received by consumers was found to be biased.

Determinants of purchasing behaviour for organic and integrated fruits and vegetables in Slovenia AgEcon

A country-vide survey related to purchasing behaviour of organic and integrated fruit and vegetables has been prepared for Slovenia. An ordered probit model of consumer choice was developed on the basis of survey results to quantify various determinants of purchase frequency for organically and integrally produced fruit and vegetables. Results show that purchase of analysed produce is most significantly influenced by their availability in retail outlets, followed by consumers’ income, health and environmental considerations, and visual attractiveness of products. Demand for organically and integrally produced fruit and vegetables could be further stimulated by targeted knowledge and awareness raising actions.

On the Role of Government in Food Staples Markets: Perspectives from Recent Research and Implications for Mozambique AgEcon

This brief reviews results of applied research regarding the role of government in staple food markets in East and Southern Africa. The purpose of the brief is to draw lessons for Mozambique as it decides how to use the grain storage silos it has been building since 2009. What Affects Consumption Patterns of Organic and Conventional Products? AgEcon

Consumers show an increased interest in organic food today and a willingness to pay premium for organic products. In addition to price, changing attitudes and beliefs about food quality affect food choice. This article analyses the impact of attitudes, quality characteristics and socio-demographics on consumption of organic and conventional pork, potatoes and milk. The concept of ‘perceived quality’ provides the theoretical background. The data come from a consumer survey conducted in Germany in 2004 (n=260). An ordered logit model was used for analysing the data. We observe clear differences in consumers’ use of certain quality characteristics as they perceive and evaluate conventional and organic fresh foods.

The transition from agricultural producer to agribusiness entrepreneur is littered with obstacles not associated with traditional farming operations. Producers are typically faced with an established market for their products as well as defined production practices and budgets. These familiar industry institutions are not available for use in the agribusiness environment. As a result, entrepreneurs are faced with new, unfamiliar situations that can significantly affect the success of their proposed or fledging business.

Meat Slaughter and Processing Plants’ Traceability Levels: Evidence From Iowa AgEcon

Based on an econometric analysis of the data obtained from a survey of meat plants ( ) in Iowa in summer 2007, this paper identifies the factors impacting the meat plants’ voluntary adoption of forward and backward traceability activities. The results suggest that the ownership type (corporate versus independent) and operations type (slaughtering versus not) matter rather than the size and meat type produced (beef, pork, or poultry) as suggested in the previous surveys. Furthermore, food safety activities appear to be complementary to traceability activities. The findings may assist ongoing regulatory efforts in implementing traceability in U.S. in the near future.

The paper addresses "food safety" and 'food quality' from the position of commodity and food science rather than economy. The various descriptions of both terms in literature are reviewed in connection with customer/supplier ability to evaluate food safety and quality by examination of various characteristics. Food safety has been described as opposite to food risk. Differences in perception of food risk by customer, producer/supplier and official agencies are discussed in this paper. Incentive compatible auction experiments, often referred to as homegrown value auctions, have become a popular tool for exploring how controversial product attributes and knowledge of these attributes affect consumer willingness to pay. The Potential Effects on United States Agriculture of an Avian Influenza Outbreak AgEcon

The U.S. poultry industry has spent considerable resources to date preparing for an outbreak of avian influenza in this country. This research quantifies the potential effects of two alternative avian influenza scenarios on the poultry industry. In addition, this research looks at effects on other agriculture sectors including the loss of feed demand from an outbreak and the impacts on aggregate measures like farm income and consumer food expenditures. The economic sector model maintained by the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) is employed for these scenarios.

Cointegration and Market Integration: An Application to the Potato Markets in Rural West Bengal, India AgEcon

The paper attempts to examine the market integration with the help of cointegration test on the prices of potato of Hooghly district in West Bengal. The analysis has been made at two levels, namely at the level of wholesale markets and at the retail markets. The cointegration test by Johansen and Jeselius (1990) applied to weekly prices of three important potato markets in Hooghly district suggest that the markets are integrated. Our results revealed that price signals and information are transmitted smoothly across the markets. These results have important policy implications. The economic and institutional dimensions of water users cooperative (WUC) societies have been analyzed with regards to performance, membership and transaction costs in forming organization in the Cauvery basin of Karnataka. Field data have been collected from presidents and members of 30 WUC societies in Tirumakudalu Narasipura taluk of Mysore, Karnataka. Using cluster analysis, these have been grouped into (i) well performing, (ii) moderately performing, and (iii) poorly performing WUC societies.
