Organic Food Quality: Can it exist without Measurement? Organic Eprints
Ismond, Alan.
Abstract - Consumers who purchase organic foods are motivated primarily by the health benefits. What assurances are there that defining organic products based on inputs, methods, and ingredients will meet or exceed consumer expectations if there are no re-quirements to define, measure, and meet product quality standards? The future of the organic industry will depend on understanding and quantifying con-sumer expectations and then defining metrics for assessing organic product quality that satisfies these expectations. After establishing quantifiable product quality targets, the next challenge will be to correlate farming and processing methods so that the product quality criteria and consumer expectations are satis-fied.

People, Place and Participation. Bringing Together Organic and Place - insights from Austria and the US Organic Eprints
Bingen, Jim; Freyer, Bernhard.
This paper suggests that deliberate policies and programs designed to identify and promote specific places (or terroir) could favor expanded organic production and market development. Shared concepts and principals between organic and place-named production suggest that a more specific relationship built on organic and geographically-indicated products and practices might offer opportunities to set priorities and identify smart strategies for enhancing the promotion of organic.

Organic farming to preserve water quality?Comparison of three emblematic cases of successful management of drinking water catchment area Organic Eprints
Barataud, Fabienne; Aubry, C.; Wezel, A.; Mundler, P.; Fleury, Philippe.
Protecting water resources from pollutants generated by agricultural activities is becoming more strictly regulated in Europe today, with an obligation to achieveresults. This means that towns willing to improve quality of their domestic water supply are required to regulate farmers’ practices in the water catchment areas. In this paper, we studied three cases (Munich and Augsburg in Germany, and Lons-le-Saunier in France) often listed as successful initiatives/ experiences of preservation of water quality by local authorities that have developed coordination with farmers. In this paper, we carried out a comparative analysis of the construction of city-farmer agreements, based on in-depth surveys and with a particular focus on the role of conversion to...

Idea and practice of inclusive farming Organic Eprints
Schäfer, Winfried.
Inclusive farming (INCLUFAR) - Transfer of concepts, experiences, skills, and training tools for social farming and eco-social inclusion is an innovation transfer project within the Lifelong Learning Leonardo da Vinci funding scheme of the EU. The results were gathered during the project period from October 2013 until September 2015.Why INCLUFAR? First, Finland signed the UN convention on the rights of persons with disabilities and is presently adjusting the legislation accordingly. Second, the results of the public consultation on the review of the EU-policy on organic agriculture conducted by the directorate general for agriculture and rural development in 2013 shows that economic and social dimension have the highest priority.Third, social farming and...

Danish case report: The Danish Food Communities Organic Eprints
Kjeldsen, Chris; Noe, Egon; Laursen, Klaus Brønd.
The Food Communities was chosen as a case for HealthyGrowth because they constitute a major novelty within the Danish foodscape. As indicated in section 3, the Food 2 Communities have emerged as the latest incarnation of a series of attempts to forge alternative food networks operating beyond the supermarket system. Denmark is distinguished by a large market share of organic food being sold via supermarkets, but The Food Communities are a novelty due to two factors, (1) they have experienced a rapid growth since the outset in 2010, and (2) they are organised in a decentralised manner, where they continue to split up the network in chapters, each operating within their distinct local area. The Food Communities are a predominantly urban phenomenon.

Consumers' Perceptions of Organic Foods in Bulgaria: Evidence from Semantic Differentials Application Organic Eprints
Vasileva, Elka; Ivanova, Daniela; Zabunov, Georgi; Tipova, Nina; Stefanov, Stiliyan.
The main tendency for most countries in Central and Eastern Europe is their organic production to be developed mainly for the purpose of export. This leads to the impossibility for organic products to be adapted to the local market and their price happens to be too high for consumers from these countries. The solution to this is the quick development and expansion of the domestic market for organic agricultural products and foods. The market of organic products in Bulgaria enlarged significantly in the last few years. Although the share of organic food products in the general food market in the country is relatively small - less than 5 %, the total area under organic products in Bulgaria (cultivated and wild collected) is more than 250 thousand. The...

Regelverk – möjligheter och hinder att uppnå målen för ekologiskt lantbruk. Organic Eprints
Wivstad, Maria; Milestad, Rebecka; Lund, Vonne.

The effects of feed composition on the sensory quality of organic rainbow trout during ice storage Organic Eprints
Green-Pedersen, Ditte Pedersen; Hyldig, Grethe; Jacobsen, Charlotte; Baron, Caroline; Nielsen, Henrik.
The focus of this work was to study which effects the type of protein and lipid source in the feed for organic Rainbow trout influences had on the sensory quality of final product. Two and four different protein and lipid sources were used in the experiment respectively. The protein sources were fishmeal and a mixture of protein from organic vegetable, while the lipid sources were fish oil and organic oil from linseed, sunflower, rapeseed and grape seed. Sensory analysis was performed after 3, 5, 7 and 14 days of storage in ice. The results showed that both protein and lipid source in the feed can influence sensory characteristics of the trout. After 3 and 7 days of storage in ice differences in the sensory characteristics between rainbow trout’s which...

Production of biomass and bioenergy in organic agriculture and its consequences for soil quality, environment, biodiversity and socio-economy Organic Eprints
Johansen, A.; Hauggaard-Nielsen, H.; Ambus, P.; Dalgaard, T.; Jørgensen, U.; Nielsen, A.M.; Nielsen, L.H.; Olesen, J.E.; Roepstorff, A.; Skytte, K.; Smith, J.E.; Thomsen, A.B.; Carter, M.S.; Jensen, E.S..
Production of bioenergy in organic agriculture may be implemented in the future to reduce the reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels and minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore it is important to assess the potential effect this may have on soil quality and biological parameters. This project aims at designing and evaluate a combined concept for biomass and bio-energy production in OA, while considering soil bio-geo-chemical cycling of plant nutrients and biodiversity of the soil microbiota.

Certified organic agriculture in China and Brazil: Market accessibility and outcomes following adoption Organic Eprints
Oelofse, Myles; Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Abreu, L.S.; Almeida, Gustavo Fonseca de; Hui, Qiao Yu; Sultan, Tursinbek; de Neergaard, Andreas.
Based on three case studies in China and Brazil, this paper explores the terms of access for farmers' participation in certified organic agriculture (OA) and investigates the influence of adoption on productivity, nutrient budgets, income and labour use. Small-scale farmers converting to OA require substantial external production-related, marketing and certification support. Access to OA was strongly dependent upon the type of support available to farmers. Organization based on a contract-farming model resulted in OA only being an option available to a narrow group of farmers, whilst OA initiated by a farmer cooperative provided better access. Gross output was significantly higher for oranges, whilst for the other crops gross output was similar. However,...
