Growth of seven perennial plant species adapted to the Brazilian Semi-Arid Acta Botanica
Silva,Paulo Sérgio Lima e; Silva,Kathia Maria Barbosa e; Lôbo,Raimundo Nonato Braga; Silva,Paulo Igor Barbosa e.
Measuring plant height (y) and canopy diameter (x) in trees may not be an easy task, but stem diameter (z) can be more easily evaluated. This work's objective was two-fold: evaluate the growth of species adapted to the Brazilian Semi-Arid Region in the first two years of age, and obtain linear equations to estimate y and x from z, in those species. A random block design with four replications was employed. The values for x, z, and y were measured biannually from October/2003 to March/2005. Prosopis juliflora and Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia showed the highest stem diameter and plant height values, respectively, and both showed the highest canopy diameter. In the equations to estimate plant height from the stem diameter the value of the coefficient of...

Water transparency is one of the main indicators of seasonal changes from the water level in lacustrine systems, but other environmental spatial and temporal variables can act jointly on water transparency. The diagnosis of interactions among physical-chemical variables and water transparency can be made by fitting statistical models based on multiple regression analysis. The objective of this study is to evaluate the set of limnologic variables that best predict the seasonal variation in water transparency in lakes of the western Amazon. These data were collected in both the drought and flood seasons in 78 lakes of the Mamirauá Reserve for Sustainable Development (RDSM). The delineation of the sampling followed the choice of variables, the analysis of...

Global patterns of aboveground carbon stock and sequestration in mangroves Anais da ABC (AABC)
ESTRADA,GUSTAVO C.D.; SOARES,MÁRIO L.G..
ABSTRACT In order to contribute to understand the factors that control the provisioning of the ecosystem service of carbon storage by mangroves, data on carbon stock and sequestration in the aboveground biomass (AGB) from 73 articles were averaged and tested for the dependence on latitude, climatic parameters, physiographic types and age. Global means of carbon stock (78.0 ± 64.5 tC.ha-1) and sequestration (2.9 ± 2.2 tC.ha-1.yr-1) showed that mangroves are among the forest ecosystems with greater capacity of carbon storage in AGB per area. On the global scale, carbon stock increases toward the equator (R²=0.22) and is dependent on 13 climatic parameters, which can be integrated in the following predictive equation: Carbon Stock in AGB = -16.342 + (8.341 x...

Determination of Drilling Rate Index Based on Rock Strength Using Regression Analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
YENICE,HAYATI.
Abstract: Drillability is influenced by many factors, including machine parameters and rock properties. The main machine parameters for drilling include rotational speed, thrust force, torque and flush pressure. The specific rock characteristics that affect penetration rate comprise uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength, Young’s modulus, hardness and brittleness. In this study, drilling rate index (DRI) is attempted to predict based on UCS and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks. Simple and multiple regression analyses have been carried out to determine the best measure of the relation between DRI and two geomechanical properties. The DRI value is strongly related to the uniaxial compressive strength and indirect tensile strength....

Validation of a leaf area prediction model proposed for rose Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Fascella,Giancarlo; Darwich,Salem; Rouphael,Youssef.
Leaf area (LA) is a valuable key for evaluating plant growth, therefore accurate, simple, and nondestructive methods for LA determination are important for physiological and agronomic studies. A LA prediction model based on leaf length (L) and width (W) and developed under greenhouse on 14 cultivars of rose (Rosa hybr.*) was validated on a different cultivar of R. hybrida 'Red France' and on a wild rose species (Rosa sempervirens L.) grown under open-field conditions with two light environments: ambient and 50% shade. Comparisons between measured vs. calculated LA using the following model: LA (cm²) = 0.56 + 0.717 LW, showed a high degree of correlation (R² > 0.95) and provided quantitative evidence of the validity of the LA prediction model. Calculated...

Use of rotavirus virus-like particles as surrogates to evaluate virus persistence in shellfish ArchiMer
Loisy, Fabienne; Atmar, R; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Cohen, J; Caprais, Marie-paule; Pommepuy, Monique; Le Guyader, Soizick.
Rotavirus virus-like particles (VLPs) and MS2 bacteriophages were bioaccumulated in bivalve mollusks to evaluate viral persistence in shellfish during depuration and relaying under natural conditions. Using this nonpathogenic surrogate virus, we were able to demonstrate that about 1 log(10) of VLPs was depurated after 1 week in warm seawater (22 degrees C). Phage MS2 was depurated more rapidly (about 2 log(10) in 1 week) than were VLPs, as determined using a single-compartment model and linear regression analysis. After being relayed in the estuary under the influence of the tides, VLPs were detected in oysters for up to 82 days following seeding with high levels of VLPs (concentration range between 10(10) and 10(9) particles per g of pancreatic tissue)...

On the Prediction of Personal Stature from Cranial Dimensions International Journal of Morphology
Ilayperuma,Isurani.
Dimensional relationship between body segments and stature has been the focus of scientists for many years. All such studies were based on the fact that body segments exhibit consistent ratios relative to the stature and these ratios are linked to age, gender and race. Racial characters are best defined in the skull. Therefore, prediction of stature from cranial remains is vital in establishing the identity of an unknown individual. Despite its significance, little is known concerning the cranial dimensions in Sri Lankans. Hence, this study was designed to investigate the relationship and to propose a gender and age specific linear regression model between the cranial dimensions and height of an individual. A total of 400 subjects with an age span of 20-23...

Prediction of Stature According to Three Head Measurements International Journal of Morphology
Rexhepi,Agron M; Brestovci,Behlul.
Morphometry is a non-invasive method important to assess the size, proportions, and composition of the human body. Because the prediction is an important subject in almost all life sciences, the aim of this research was to find out the cephalofacial variables that may predict the body height. Three cephalofacial variables and the body height were measured on 288 adult male subjects of the Kosovo Albanian population, aged 1835 years old. Using the procedures of regressive analysis we found that cephalofacial variables: head height, head circumferences, face height, significantly may predict body height, and in this way we derived the specific regression equation for estimation of the body height, based on these cephalofacial variables. The predicted body...

Cranial Capacity in an Adult Sri Lankan Population: Sexual Dimorphism and Ethnic Diversity International Journal of Morphology
Ilayperuma,I.
Cranial capacity exerts a close correlation with the volume of the brain. A large body of evidence shows a clear racial variation in cranial dimensions. Therefore detailed knowledge of the population specific data on biometric features of the cranial cavity is important in the study and comparison of the crania of populations from different racial backgrounds, assessing growth and development of an individual and in the diagnosis of any abnormalities of cranial size and shape. Despite its significance, little is known concerning the cranial capacity in Sri Lankans. Hence, the present study was undertaken to establish the cranial capacity in an adult Sri Lankan population. A total of 210 subjects with an age span of 20-23 years were included in the study....

Screening for ketosis using multiple logistic regression based on milk yield and composition OAK
KAYANO, Mitsunori; KATAOKA, Tomoko; 茅野, 光範.
Multiple logistic regression was applied to milk yield and composition data for 632 records of healthy cows and 61 records of ketotic cows in Hokkaido, Japan. The purpose was to diagnose ketosis based on milk yield and composition, simultaneously. The cows were divided into two groups: (1) multiparous, including 314 healthy cows and 45 ketotic cows and (2) primiparous, including 318 healthy cows and 16 ketotic cows, since nutritional status, milk yield and composition are affected by parity. Multiple logistic regression was applied to these groups separately. For multiparous cows, milk yield (kg/day/cow) and protein-to-fat (P/F) ratio in milk were significant factors (P<0.05) for the diagnosis of ketosis. For primiparous cows, lactose content (%), solid...
