PHENOLOGY, BIOMETRICS AND FRUITS PRODUCTION OF Attalea nucífera (ARECACEAE) IN COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
Jiménez-Morera,Ivon; García,Néstor.
ABSTRACT Attalea nucífera is a threatened palm endemic to the Magdalena River basin in Colombia. In the past its seeds were consumed by the inhabitants of the town of Guaduas, Cundinamarca, although currently its use is less frequent. To assess the productive potential of this palm, we studied its phenology, biometric parameters, and fruit productivity in a forest relict in Guaduas. Field work was carried out between April 2016 and March 2017. The reproductive cycle of this species lasted approximately 12 and a half months from bud to fruit ripening. Although bud production occurred throughout the year, it increased during periods of greatest rainfall. Flowering peaks occurred towards the end of the rainy season and fruits ripened towards the period of low...

Diet, sexual dimorphism and reproduction of sympatric racers Philodryas aestiva and Philodryas patagoniensis from the coastal Brazilian Pampa Anais da ABC (AABC)
QUINTELA,FERNANDO M.; LOEBMANN,DANIEL.
Abstract: Herein we investigated diet, sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology of two sympatric congeneric species at the coastal Brazilian Pampa, Philodryas aestiva and P. patagoniensis. Analysis of the stomach content of the scansorial Philodryas aestiva revealed that it feeds mainly on Anura and small mammals, while it occasionally consumes Insecta, Squamata and Aves. The more terrestrial Philodryas patagoniensis presented a broader diet, composed mainly of Anura, Squamata and small mammals. Insecta and Actinopterygii were found in lower frequencies. In females of both species, snout-vent length was significantly larger than in males, while tail length/snout-vent length ratio was significantly higher in males. Males reach sexual maturity at smaller...

Reproductive biology of Thamnodynastes hypoconia (Serpentes: Dipsadidae) in Brazilian subtemperate wetlands Anais da ABC (AABC)
REBELATO,MARLUCI M.; PONTES,GLÁUCIA M.F.; TOZETTI,ALEXANDRO M..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the reproductive biology of populations of Thamnodynastes hypoconia in subtemperate wetlands based on macroscopic analyses of their gonads. We analyzed 101 specimens from the southernmost regions of Brazil. The males had a greater snout-vent length, but the females reached sexual maturity with a greater body size. The reproductive cycle of the females was seasonal, with secondary vitellogenesis occurring between the winter and spring (May-October). Based on macroscopic analysis of gonads, data suggests that males have a continuous reproductive cycle. Parturition occurs between the late summer and early fall (January-April). The clutch size ranged between 4 and 16 embryos and showed no relationship with the female's...

Reproductive biology of a viviparous lizard (Mabuya dorsivittata) from the subtropical Wet Chaco of Argentina: geographical variations in response to local environmental pressures Anais da ABC (AABC)
ORTIZ,MARTÍN A.; BORETTO,JORGELINA M.; IBARGÜENGOYTÍA,NORA R..
Herein we studied the reproductive biology of a viviparous lizard (Mabuya dorsivittata) from the Wet Chaco region (northeastern Argentina) and compared the results with other populations from the Espinal (central Argentina) and the Atlantic Forest (southeastern Brazil), and with other Neotropical species of Mabuya to better understand the possible causes of its reproductive phenotype variation. Males and females of M. dorsivittata from the Wet Chaco exhibited associated, seasonal, and annual reproductive cycles. Spermatogenic activity related positively to a lengthening photoperiod reaching maximum activity in late spring (December). Females displayed an extended gestation period of 11 months, from mid-summer (February) to late spring or early summer...

Reproduction of a whiptail lizard (Ameivula ocellifera, Teiidae) from a coastal area in northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
ZANCHI-SILVA,DJAN; BORGES-NOJOSA,DIVA M.; GALDINO,CONRADO A.B..
The reproductive ecology of Ameivula ocellifera was studied from September 2009 to August 2010 in a coastal area of the state of Ceará, Brazil. Females reproduced continuously throughout the year, with a peak at the end of the rainy season. Even though there was a predominance of pre-reproductive individuals in the sample, gonadal activity of males peaked synchronously to female reproduction. Mean clutch size was 1.98 ± 0.56 and positively associated with female body size, while mean egg volume was 510.54 ± 84.29 mm3 and unrelated to female body size. We did not find any association between clutch size and average egg volume.

Population dynamics and reproductive biology ofAchatina fulica Bowdich, 1822 (Mollusca, Gastropoda) in Salvador - Bahia Biota Neotropica
Silva,Eder Carvalho da; Omena,Elianne Pessoa.
The risks following introduction of invasive species are enormous and incalculable. Achatina fulica is considered one of the 100 species of greatest invasive potential, stands out among the land pulmonate snails, mostly for its high reproductive potential that accelerates the process of dispersion, increasing the damages related to health (disease transmission), to economy (crops destruction) and to environment (biodiversity loss). In order to investigate the relationship of the African snail with the environment, trying to relate sexual activity with climatic variables (temperature, rainfall and humidity), a study was conducted on aspects of population dynamics and reproductive biology in Salvador city. The snails were collected by hand, monthly....

Reproduction of the greater bulldog bat Noctilio leporinus (Chiroptera: Noctilionidae) in a mangrove area in southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Bordignon,Marcelo Oscar; França,Adriana de Oliveira.
The reproductive pattern of the greater bulldog bat (Noctilio leporinus) was studied in southern Brazil from January to December 1999. The morphological characteristics of their reproductive organs were recorded monthly, through histological analysis of testes and ovaries. Those data were correlated with forearm size and body mass, as well as with external reproductive characteristics. The diameter of the seminiferous tubule increased proportionately to testis mass and body weight, and larger males had greater testis mass. Sexually mature males were recorded throughout the year. Ovary histology revealed that females ovulate between July and December. Lactating females were recorded in nearly every month of the year. Noctilio leporinus has a bimodal...

Reproductive biology of Oligosarcus argenteus (Gunther, 1864) adult males and description of the gonadal maturation stages BABT
Matt,Sérgio Luis Pinto da; Gomes,Marcos de Lucca Moreira; Andrade,Dálcio Ricardo de.
Oligosarcus argenteus belongs to the Acestrorhynchinae subfamily, being restricted to South America, and found in several Brazilian hydrographic basins, in lotic and lentic environments, where they are able to reproduce. With the purpose of studying the reproductive biology of the males from this species, many morphological parameters were analyzed during a 24 month period, as well as characterizing the different testicular maturation stages. A maturity scale, with three stages (I - Initial Maturing, II - Intermediate Maturing, III - Final Maturing) was proposed for the adult males of Oligosarcus argenteus. The reproductive period was established by the bimonthly frequency of spermatogenesis and by the gonadal maturation stages.

Plasma testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone levels of male pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus (Cypriniformes, Characidae) BJMBR
Gazola,R.; Borella,M.I..
The levels of testosterone (T) and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) of the South American pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus were determined by radioimmunoassay during two stages of the reproductive cycle, i.e., resting and maturation, and the gonadosomatic index (GSI) was calculated. The highest levels of T and 11-KT were reached during the maturation stage (T = 2400 ± 56 pg/ml; 11-KT = 2300 ± 60 pg/ml) and lower levels were maintained during the resting period. The rise in androgen levels occurred with the appearance of spermatozoa in the maturation stage, when GSI was highest

Descrição do ciclo reprodutivo de Donax hanleyanus (Bivalvia, Donacidae) no sul do Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Gil,Guacira M.; Thomé,José W..
The changes in gonadal development in male and female of Donax hanleyanus Philippi, 1847 are described. Gonad development and spawning seasons were assessed by monthly sampling of population from Arroio Teixeira beach, southern Brazil. Histological examination of clams showed in the most of the adult population sampled that the spawning is practically continuous, without any period of sexual rest. There are two main periods of gametogenesis, in winter and in summer, being the degree of maturation longer in the latter. The water temperature is stimulant on gametes proliferation and spawning.

The reproductive cycle of the European clam Ruditapes decussatus (L., 1758) in two Portuguese populations: Implications for management and aquaculture programs ArchiMer
Matias, Domitilia; Joaquim, Sandra; Matias, Ana Margarete; Moura, Paula; Sousa, Joana; Sobral, Paula; Leitao, Alexandra.
The reproductive cycle, as well as its nutrient storage and utilization, of two populations of Ruditapes decussatus from the main production areas of this species: Ria de Aveiro and Ria Formosa Lagoon (Portugal) were studied here over a 24 month period (May 2010-April 2012). The reproductive cycle of both populations of R. decussatus followed an annual cyclicality that comprised a ripe stage in spring followed by a spawning period that began in late spring and extended throughout summer until early autumn. This extended and continuous spawning period may be an advantageous strategy for this species by ensuring a continuous supply of gametes. Moreover, R. decussatus can adopt different reproductive strategies depending on the geographical origin. The...

Cycles saisonniers, reproduction et qualite des ovocytes chez Pecten maximus en rade de Brest ArchiMer
Paulet, Yves-marie; Bekhadra, Farida; Devauchelle, Nicole; Donval, Anne; Dorange, Germaine.
This work is part of the program, "recruitment determinism in scallops" initiated in 1992 by the "Contrat de Baie". The aim of this research was to explain interannual abundance fluctuations observed for Pecten maximus, in the Bay of Brest. To this end an analytical approach to the life cycle of the species was undertaken to determine its critical phases. A phase may be considered as "critical" if the mortality rate at its level varies from one year to the other. Using data from 1989 to 1994, a precise time-table of the "physiological year" of the scallop in the Bay of Brest was determined. Fecundity and gamete production kinetics were estimated from the annual variation in the weight indices of the gonad. In the laboratory, egg quality was estimated...

Rising water temperatures, reproduction and recruitment of an invasive oyster, Crassostrea gigas, on the French Atlantic coast ArchiMer
Dutertre, Mickael; Beninger, Peter G.; Barille, Laurent; Papin, Mathias; Haure, Joel.
The recent appearance and invasion of feral oysters (Crassostrea gigas) along the northern European Atlantic coast, underscores the necessity to investigate the relationship between environmental variables, reproductive physiology, larval development and recruitment. We studied these relationships at both high (HT) and intermediate (IT) - turbidity sites, through historical data on water temperatures, multi-parameter environmental probes, histological analyses, and field collections of planktonic larvae and settled post-larvae in 2005 and 2006. A progressive warming trend was observed, especially since 1995, when oyster proliferation first became severe. Threshold temperatures for oocyte growth, larval development and settlement were achieved in both 2005...

Gametogenic cycle and reproductive effort of the tropical blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera (Bivalvia : Pteriidae), cultivated in Takapoto atoll (French Polynesia) ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Gangnery, Aline; Tiapari, Jerome; Lagarde, Franck; Garnier, Matthieu; Bodoy, Alain.
The gametogenic cycle and the reproductive effort of the blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, cultivated in Takapoto lagoon were studied for a 1-year period (March 1997-April 1998) by bimonthly observations of gonadal sections, dry tissue weights and gonadal index in a population of pearl oyster composed of three age-groups. pearl oysters attained sexual maturity in the end of their first year (height approximate to 40 mm), implying that P. margaritifera is a late-maturing species in comparison with other Pteriidae. This species was also confirmed to be a marked protandrous successive hermaphrodite in culture, with 100 % of males at first maturity and 75 % in older pearl oyster (height > 120 mm). The general pattern of gametogenic activity,...

Reproduction et recrutement de la coque Cerastoderma edule L. a Saint-Pol-de-Leon (Bretagne Nord) ArchiMer
Guillou, Jean-louis; Tartu, C.
Investigation on the recruitment of Cerastoderma edule was carried out at St-Pol-de-Leon over three years. This approach is intended to disclose in the fluctuations of recruitment the part of variability linked with reproduction and spawning. Stages of sexual maturity are used together with a condition index. The reproductive activity spread out over the most part of the year, ripe individuals being observed even in winter. Main spawning took place in summer and autumn. Seasonal and interannual fluctuations of recruitment are associated with the variations of the condition index. An increase of the reproductive activity could be observed between 1987 and 1989 related with temperature. It is shown that this factor is the main responsible of the variations...

Peculiarities of reproduction and generative production of tropical copepods ArchiMer
Sazhina, L.
The aim of the present investigation consisted in revealing the regular natural changes of fecundity in mass pelagic copepods of the World Ocean tropical zone. Particular emphasis was placed on determination of the clutch size, duration of development, rate of generative production formation at both organism and population levels, and connection of these processes with environmental conditions. The major difficulty lay in the fact that most mass species of tropical copepods are laying eggs immediately into water thus complicating the determination of quantitative characteristics of reproduction.

Thielley, Maryse.
The population of Pinctada margaritifera and Pinctada maculata lay eggs throughout the year. Temperature variations induce huge but asynchronous laying. Preferential periods of gonad maturity correspond to the season changings in both species. However. some differences between the two specics are noticed. Both species are protandric hermaphrodites. Female condition is unstable: a reversion to the male condition may be observed and is probably linked with stress. The average size for the first sexual maturation as weil as for sexual conversion are specified in P. margaritifera. The breeding conditions induce modifications in some reproductive cycle processes (maturation, sex-ratio). Some conditions suitable for reproduction may become unfavorable to...
