Le projet SEA-ERA MERMAID « Marine Environmental targets linked to Regional Management schemes based on Indicators Developed for the Mediterranean » a été lancé le 12 juin 2013 à Athènes. |

The repopulating of aquatic environments has long been based on the idea that in order to increase halieutic resources, one just had to artificially increase the number of fish in their early stages in marine or fresh water environments. Therefore, as the knowledge on the reproduction of some species and the mastery of their artificial reproduction was growing, the capacity to produce large amounts of eggs or fries from different fish or mollusc species became a reality. Controlled reproduction and the availability of large quantities of fertilized eggs, and then of larvae showing, in captivity, a greater survival capacity than naturally reproduced ones, lead to an increase of repopulating attempts through the release of fries or young fishes raised in... |

The first phase of the assessment of halieutic resources in the west of Europe was realised thanks to the Fisheries authority for the European Communities Commission. Different operations were carried out: - Creation of a data capture and extraction software. - Carrying out of a programmed trawling cruise in the area located between 48'35 N and the Capbreton canyon, from 15 m deep to 600 m. 132 30-minutes-stations were conducted and enabled the sampling of the main captured species as well as the collection of a large biological material. - Analysis of the trawling results through kriging. This method should facilitate the analysis of the distributions of the main halieutic populations. - Analysis of the yield and size/age distributions for the most... |

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), adopted in June 2008, commits Member States to adopt an ecosystemic approach to manage the marine environment. By this directive, France aims to achieve good environmental status of its marine waters by 2020. Descriptor 3 stipulates that populations of all commercially exploited fish and shellfish are within safe biological limits, exhibiting a population age and size distribution that is indicative of a healthy stock. The Marine Directive builds on existing European Union (EU) legislation as the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and criteria describing stocks status are derived from international authorities works as the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the General Fisheries... |

Following the decision of the European Union to enforce drastic management actions in the fishery sector, there is now a debate on the reality of the overexploitation of the major living resources. This paper firstly provides an overview of the state of the world fishery resources as it is shown by international studies. It then focus on European fisheries which are of interest for the French fleets, including those which are not managed by a TAC and quotas system. Finally, various arguments which are often used to explain the depletion of fishery resources in European waters are examined. We conclude that fishing dominates all other factors with regard to the evolution of marine living resources. |
