Supply and Demand Side Limitations Affecting the Structure of Agriculture and the Rural Economy AgEcon
Tocco, Barbara; Davidova, Sophia; Bailey, Alastair.
This paper criticises the neo-classical assumptions of perfect factor markets and of complete information, which constitute central elements in labour market theory. Based on a literature review and on economic reports from transition economies, as well as developing countries and more advanced economies, this deliverable focuses on the structural impediments and imperfections that often characterise rural labour markets and that may prevent an efficient allocation of labour. According to empirical studies, transactions costs and rigidities hinder the well-functioning of labour markets and constrain labour adjustments. The paper attempts to classify the various limitations of rural labour markets from both the supply and demand side, although the...

Rural Income Generating Activities in Developing Countries: Re-assessing the Evidence AgEcon
Carletto, Gero; Covarrubias, Katia; Davis, Benjamin; Krausova, Marika; Stamoulis, Kostas G.; Winters, Paul C.; Zezza, Alberto.
This paper contributes to the understanding of the dynamics of developing country rural labour markets by re-evaluating the available evidence on the levels and composition of income sources adopted by rural households in order to understand the relationship between the various economic activities taking place in rural areas and their implications for economic growth and poverty reduction. This is achieved in two parts: First, the paper introduces the Rural Income Generating Activities (RIGA) database, a newly constructed FAO repository of household survey data, income measures and cross-country comparable indicators. Second, using the RIGA database, the paper undertakes a descriptive analysis of the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors of the rural...

Motivation and intentions of farmers as regards the development of multifunctional agriculture in microregions of Northern and Eastern Hungary AgEcon
Feher, Alajos; Czimbalmos, Robert; Kovacs, Gyorgyi; Szepesy, Edit.
There are an increasing number of references in the literature on the significance of the role of farm households and farm families in the development of multifunctional agriculture. The motivation and intentions of 104 farmers in three LEADER micro-regions in Northern and Eastern Hungary with respect to the present and future structures of their farms (including the expansion of non-agricultural activities and functions) were investigated using questionnaires and narrative interviews. Almost two-thirds of the respondents spoke of the existence of non-agricultural activities and functions, but few of these were market-driven. The farmers ranked the steps that should be taken to increase multifunctionality in their own micro-regions in order of importance...

Rural America At A Glance, 2009 Edition AgEcon
Kusmin, Lorin D..
Update of an annual series, the 2009 edition of Rural America At A Glance deals with effects of the major recession on rural America. Initially, effects of the recession were mitigated in nonmetro areas by high commodity prices throughout much of 2008, but as the recession deepened, prices fell. Both nonmetro and metro areas experienced rising unemployment as manufacturing and other major employment sectors contracted, and they were similarly affected by the mortgage foreclosure crisis. However, even before the current recession, nonmetro poverty rates had risen in the growth years after the 2001 recession, against the usual trend during a time of economic expansion; the nonmetro poverty rate has exceeded the national poverty rate since 2001. The nonmetro...

ESDA-GIS Analysis of Spatial-temporal Disparity in Rural Economic Development of Guangxi AgEcon
Liao, Wei-hua.
On the basis of spatial-temporal perspective, by using the data of farmers’ net income per capita from 1996 to 2007 in counties of Guangxi coupled with the global and local spatial auto-correlation analysis of ESDA and GIS technology, we conduct the empirical research on the rural economic developmental disparity of counties in Guangxi and the evolving characteristics of local spatial heterogeneity. The results show that the rural economic developmental disparity of counties in Guangxi from 1996 to 2007 varies infinitesimally on the whole, and the regions with similar rural economic developmental level have spatial concentrated distribution. Based on these, the local MORAN’S I scatter diagram and LISA concentration diagram are drawn. In comparison with the...

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RURAL ECONOMY AgEcon
Magda, Sandor; Magda, Robert; Marselek, Sandor.
This paper seeks to provide an overview of those economic social and environmental issues which could be relevant for sustainable development of the rural economy. Rural development is of great significance for the future of both the EU and Hungary. We must reduce migration, create new jobs and focus on sustainability and the principles and goals of environmental protection and nature conservation. Rural economy is a complex and dynamic system, and agriculture should be treated as a part of it. The development of rural settlements and their infrastructure, the manifold exploitation of the agroecological potential, the rationalization of farming remain, extremely important components of rural development.

Birtokkoncentráció, foglalkoztatás, diverzifikáció és multifunkcionalitás AgEcon
Feher, Alajos; Czimbalmos, Robert; Kovacs, Gyorgyi; Szepesy, Edit.

The multifunctionality of agriculture and risk management as seen by Hungarian farmers involved in diversified farming AgEcon
Petrics, Hajnalka; Feher, Alajos.
Studying the multifunctional nature of agriculture requires a multi-level, multi-dimensional and multi-actor approach. In any given country analysis starts at the national economy level then descends to the farm and farm household level. In our study we analysed the life histories of nineteen non-representatively selected Hungarian family farms. In doing so, we determined that, to understand new initiatives undertaken by farmers, it was better to examine their motivation than merely examining the initiatives themselves. At the farm household level, multifunctionality is strongly related to achieving livelihood strategies and constitutes a possible risk management solution. The analysis has revealed farmers’ motivations for undertaking multifunctional...

A MEZŐGAZDASÁGI JÖVEDELMEK STABILITÁSA AgEcon
Lamfalusi, Ibolya.

A NEW STRUCTURE FOR AGRICULTURE: A REVOLUTION FOR RURAL AMERICA AgEcon
Drabenstott, Mark.
U.S. agriculture is undergoing a tidal wave of change in its structure. A shift to supply chains and away from commodities and commodity markets is the hallmark of this new wave. The new agriculture of the 21st century will bring with it a new geography that may be nothing short of a revolution for rural America. Supply chains will tend to concentrate activity geographically and change the local economic dynamic where they do locate. Finally, the tide of change in agriculture's structure means a whole new slate of policy issues. Concentration, market access, and the delivery mechanism for government support all become bigger concerns with supply chains. But perhaps the biggest policy challenge looming ahead is addressing rural America's economic...

The Food and Fiber System: Contributing to the U.S. and World Economies AgEcon
Lipton, Kathryn L..
Even though farming accounts for only about 1 percent of the total national workforce, it is at the core of the food and fiber system. The system is one of the largest sectors in the U.S. economy, and is comprised of industries related to farming, including feed, seed, fertilizer, machinery, food processing, manufacturing, and exporting. The interrelationships among the sectors of the food and fiber system and the U.S. and world economies are many and complex. As a result, U.S. and world policies and economic factors--such as interest and inflation rates--play a critical role in everything from the cost and availability of farm credit to the demand for farm products at home and abroad. The farm crisis of the 1980's illustrates how specific economic events...

Spatial Networks, Labor Supply and Income Dynamics: Evidence from Indonesian Villages AgEcon
Yamauchi, Futoshi; Muto, Megumi; Chowdhury, Shyamal K.; Dewina, Reno; Sumaryanto, Sony.
This paper examines the impact of spatial connectivity development on household income growth and non-agriculture labor supply, combining household panel data and village census in Indonesia. Empirical results show that the impacts of the improvement of local road quality in the area (positively correlated with transportation speed) on income growth and the transition to non-agricultural labor markets depends on the distance to economic centers and household education. In particular, post-primary education significantly increases the benefit from the local spatial connectivity improvement in remote areas and labor transition to non-agricultural sectors. Education and local road quality are complementary, mutually increasing income growth and...
