Wine Roads in Greece: A Cooperation for the Development of Local Tourism in Rural Areas AgEcon
Karafolas, Simeon.
An association of Wine Roads was developed in Greece at the beginning of the 1990s in an attempt to boost rural tourism. The association was created by wine producers in the regions of Macedonia and was then extended to Epirus, Thessaly and Thrace. Its main purpose has been the promotion of wine companies and the association's regional members, while its specific targets have been the development of local tourism, the support of cultural heritage and the improvement of product quality and related services. The Wine Roads initiative has received substantial financial support from the European Union and the State of Greece, mainly through the LEADER II program. However, socioeconomic results for the participating companies and regions appear to differ. An...

Potential links between rural tourism and agriculture in the Northern Great Plain Region AgEcon
Szabo, Bernadett; Posta, Laszlo.
Agriculture has played and still plays a significant role in the life of rural communities and in rural development. But, because agriculture yields low revenues, agricultural workers often need a source of additional income. Agriculture combines excellently with the growing of medicinal herbs, organic farming, handicrafts and tourism. Rural tourism, as originally conceived, is a source of revenue to supplement income from agriculture. In Hungary, however, the ties between these two activities are very weak. Our current research is focused on assessing the willingness of land owners and agricultural entrepreneurs in the Northern Great Plain region to engage in rural tourism, as well as the willingness of rural hosts to start agricultural activities....

OS EFEITOS DO TURISMO NO ESPAÇO RURAL NA GERAÇÃO DE RENDA E EMPREGO: O CASO DE SÃO MARTINHO (SC) AgEcon
Elesbao, Ivo.
The contemporary rural space needs to be considered in all its diversity. The non-agricultural activities, particularly those that involve leisure and tourism, have become increasingly important and may contribute to the local economy dynamics. The aim in this work was to identify the effects of tourism on income and job generation in the rural space. The basis of the qualitative research was a case study in São Martinho, a city in Santa Catarina state. Semi-structured interviews were done with the ten people responsible for the tourism enterprises in the district’s rural area. It was noticed that the resources originating from tourism were responsible for most of the entrepreneurs’ family revenue, contributing to an improvement in their lifestyle. There...

A falusi turizmus helyzete és ökonómiai értékelése zempléni településekben AgEcon
Szabo, Bernadett.
A térség jelentős turisztikai potenciált rejt magában, melynek hasznosítása azonban szerény.

Evaluating Household Leisure Behaviour of Rural Tourism in Japan AgEcon
Ohe, Yasuo.
Understanding the demand profile of rural tourism is a necessary condition for the successful diversification of any rural economy. Although descriptive analyses have been conducted on this issue, a more generalised framework is required that allows us to explore economic analyses. This paper evaluates the leisure behaviour of households that have a preference for rural tourism in Japan. First, we give conceptual consideration to the notion that leisure behaviour should be regarded as a form of a home production and explain that households that undertake rural tourism have undergone an upward shift in the home production function to realise a higher utility level. We propose that a preference for rural recreation causes this shift by improving the...

VENDÉGFOGADÁS A KARCAGI KISTÉRSÉGBEN AgEcon
Hekline-Herbaly, Katalin.

The Promotion of Rural Tourism in Korea and Other East Asia Countries: Policies and Implementation AgEcon
Lee, Jae-Ouk; Thomson, Kenneth J..
Within a context of global trade liberalisation and constrained national budgets, agriculture in many countries has proved incapable of sustaining household livelihoods an d socio-economic development in rural areas. The post-war industrial success of several Asian countries has suggested various alternatives for rural development, including tourism for domestic and possibly foreign visitors. After outlining the economic characteristics of rural tourism and its policies, this paper reviews the evolution of government policies in this area in East Asia, including the establishment of "tourist farms" and "pilot scheme" villages in Korea since the 1980s. A field survey of some 200 Korean village leaders and others, undertaken in 2004, is reported as to the...

Comunicação para o Turismo no Espaço Rural AgEcon
Mariani, Milton Pasquoto; Gehlen, Marco Antonio.

Agritourism flows to Italy: an analysis of determinants using the gravity model approach AgEcon
Santeramo, Fabio G.; Seccia, Antonio; De Blasi, Giuseppe; Carlucci, Domenico.
Tourism represents one of the most important income sources for Italy. In recent years, apart from “traditional” destinations, tourism supply is widely changing in order to satisfy the customers “love for variety” and valorise marginal resources, then new formulas are emerging (e.g. agritourism). This work aims to elaborate and estimate an econometric model able to adequately explain the size of agritourists flows to Italy from main partner countries using the gravity model approach that has been broadly applied to the analysis of international flows. In this work, the “basic” model has been enlarged and improved with the introduction of other explicative variables. The results has allowed to confirm empirical validity of the gravity model in studying...

EVALUATING OPERATORS’ SATISFACTION AND POTENTIAL OF LOCAL RESOURCES FOR RURAL TOURISM: EVIDENCE FROM MATSUURA IN JAPAN AgEcon
Ohe, Yasuo; Kurihara, Shinichi; Shimoura, Shinpei.
As rural tourism evolves into diversification, the connection between the individual and local resource management is becoming an important issue for the sustainable evolution of rural tourism. To explore this point, we investigated conceptually and empirically whether rural tourism operators’ individual satisfaction enhances utilization of local resources and, if so, what mechanism works for it by focusing on rural tourism accompanied by an educational program, i.e. a farm-stay with farm and rural experience services implemented as a part of school trips in Matsuura, Japan. From statistical tests and an econometric estimation based on a questionnaire survey of rural tourism operators we found that operators’ individual satisfaction gained from interchange...

In this paper, we review the tourism impact from state supported events associated with Texas Rural Economic Development program and in the process of funding measure aspects of events that are found to be related to economic value. The economic values are the result of visitor spending and extrapolated to total event attendance creates economic value. Communities receiving funding were responsible for collecting visitor surveys to measure consumer spending as well as the community completing a survey to record descriptors of the event. The overall program results were that state support represented 14 percent of the total event investment and total event value from visitor spending created approximately $7.50 return for every $1 of state funding....
