Local Consequences of Applying International Norms: Differences in the Application of Forest Certification in Northern Sweden, Northern Finland, and Northwest Russia Ecology and Society
Tysiachniouk, Maria; Centre for Independent Social Research, St. Petersburg, Russia; tysiachn@indepsocres.spb.ru.
Forest certification, developed in the early 1990s, is a process in which independent assessors grant use of the certification label to producers who meet certain environmental and social criteria set for their forest products. This label was quickly seen to offer a market advantage and to signal corporate social and environmental responsibility. This paper focuses on international norms pertaining to environmental and indigenous rights, as manifested in cases of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)- and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)-compatible certification, and how these norms have been applied domestically and perceived locally in different states. Case studies are drawn from northern Sweden, northern Finland, and three...

Monitoring Current Status of and Trends in Boreal Forest Land Use in Russian Karelia Ecology and Society
Burnett, Charles; University of Salzburg; charles.burnett@sbg.ac.at; Fall, Andrew; Simon Fraser University; fall@cs.sfu.ca; Tomppo, Erkki; Finnish Forest Research Institute; Erkki.Tomppo@metla.fi; Kalliola, Risto; University of Turku; risto.kalliola@utu.fi.
Some of the last remaining near-natural boreal forest landscapes in northern Europe can be found in the Russian Karelia near its border with Finland. Currently, these forests are facing strong exploitation pressure in the form of extensive clearcuts. Demand for conservation is also high. We characterize the boreal forest landscape in the region and assess the impacts of past and potential management actions through a mapping and modeling study that synthesizes methods from landscape ecology, remote sensing, and simulation modeling. The forests of the study area were mapped using techniques for interpreting multitemporal satellite images and detecting changes. The species composition and structure of the forests were estimated using the multisource...

The role of harvest, predators, and socio-political environment in the dynamics of the Taimyr wild reindeer herd with some lessons for North America Ecology and Society

The Taimyr wild reindeer herd, i.e., caribou (Rangifer tarandus), is one of the most important wildlife resources in the Russian Far North and may constitute the largest migratory Rangifer herd in the world. Over the last 60 years the herd has undergone a recovery from low numbers in the 1940s, reaching high densities by 1970 that concerned wildlife managers and domestic husbandry herds, with an 11.7% annual growth rate. At that time an aggressive commercial harvest of the herd was implemented, and organized wolf control was initiated with the goal of stabilizing herd numbers and injecting needed economic activity into the region. These actions dampened the rate of increase throughout the 1970s and 1980s to a 3.0% annual growth rate. From 1991, after the...

Rússia: previsões e tendências quanto à produção, ao consumo e à exportação de carnes. Infoteca-e
SEIXAS, M. A..

Infoteca-e
SEIXAS, M. A..

Infoteca-e
SEIXAS, M. A..

Latrunculia oparinae n. sp. (Demospongiae, Poecilosclerida, Latrunculiidae) from the Kurile Islands, Sea of Okhotsk, Russia Naturalis
Samaai, Toufiek; Krasokhin, Vladimir.
A new species of Latrunculia with unusual properties is described from Kurile Island, Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. Although this species is structurally very similar in choanosomal architecture to all known species of Latrunculia, it differs from other Latrunculia in both the structure of the anisodiscorhabd microscleres and by possessing terminally spined styles. It is the first Latrunculia to be described with terminally spined anisostyles. Furthermore, the characteristic anisodiscorhabds of this new species closely resemble microfossils found in Oligocene deposits from New Zealand. The similarity between the new species and the fossil New Zealand species, along with the strong differences in spiculation from other Latrunculia species, suggest a Tethyan...

Body Weight and Labour Market Outcomes in Post-Soviet Russia AgEcon
Huffman, Sonya Kostova; Rizov, Marian.
This paper estimates the impacts of weight, measured by body mass index (BMI), on employment, wages, and missed work due to illness for Russian adults by gender using recent panel data (1994-2005) from the nationally representative Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS). We employ econometric techniques to control for unobserved heterogeneity and potential biases due to endogeneity in BMI. The results show an inverted U-shaped effect of BMI on probability of employment for men and women. We did not find evidence of wage penalty for higher BMI. In fact, the wages for overweigh men are higher. However, having a BMI above 28.3 increases the number of days missing work due to health problems for men. Overall, we find negative effects of obesity on...

Instruments Reducing Climatic Risk for Russian Agriculture AgEcon
Sannikova, Marina; Bukusheva, Raushan.
The paper evaluates technical solutions and two main tapes of index-based insurance: area yield insurance and weather-based index insurance regarding their efficiency in reducing climatic risks of Russian farms in the steppes zone. The analysis considers area yield insurance at two levels of aggregation - oblast and rayon (county) level. Weather-based index insurance products are drawn up by combining two weather parameters - daily precipitation and daily average air temperature. We employ yield and weather data of an experimental station in the Central Volga Russia for the period from 1979 to 2000. In addition experts' assessments are used to specify alternative levels of production technology and respective yield distributions for the considered region....

Multiple Job Holding in Russia During Economic Transition AgEcon
Foley, Mark C..
This article analyzes multiple job holding in the context of economic transition. Evidence from a nationally representative longitudinal survey of Russian citizens is used to characterize secondary jobs and second job holders, with emphasis on the determinants of multiple job holding. There has been a marked increase in multiple job holding, rising from 5.6 percent overall in 1992 to 10.1 percent in 1996. Economic conditions prevalent in Russia’s labor market are found to strongly affect secondary job activity. Workers who have experienced wage arrears, been placed on involuntary leave, or are working less than full-time are all significantly more likely to take on second jobs. Higher education nearly doubles this probability. As transition has progressed,...

Russia’s cereal markets: current trends, changes in net-trade position, and policy implications AgEcon
Muller, Marc; Wehrheim, Peter.
This paper provides an overview of the most recent developments on Russian cereal markets. A review of annual statistics on domestic production, trade, consumption, and storage of cereals reveals that the improvement in Russia’s net trade position cannot only be explained by increased productivity of grain producers. Exhausted storage capacities and lowered real trade costs after the devaluation of the Russian rouble in 1998 seem to have contributed to these developments. A computable general equilibrium model for Russia based on 1999 data was used for analyzing various economic developments and policy changes. The model simulations show that market protection in the short run, when the flexibility of labor and capital is restricted, may benefit Russian...
