With the development of applications associated to ego-vision systems, smart-phones, and autonomous cars, automated analysis of videos generated by freely moving cameras has become a major challenge for the computer vision community. Current techniques are still not suitable to deal with real-life situations due to, in particular, wide scene variability and the large range of camera motions. Whereas most approaches attempt to control those parameters, this paper introduces a novel video analysis paradigm, ‘vide-omics’, inspired by the principles of genomics where variability is the expected norm. Validation of this new concept is performed by designing an implementation addressing foreground extraction from videos captured by freely moving cameras.... |

An automated signal-based method was developed in order to analyse the seafloor backscatter data logged by calibrated multibeam echosounder. The processing consists first in the clustering of each survey sub-area into a small number of homogeneous sediment types, based on the backscatter average level at one or several incidence angles. Second, it uses their local average angular response to extract discriminant descriptors, obtained by fitting the field data to the Generic Seafloor Acoustic Backscatter parametric model. Third, the descriptors are used for seafloor type classification. The method was tested on the multi-year data recorded by a calibrated 90-kHz Simrad ME70 multibeam sonar operated in the Bay of Biscay, France and Celtic Sea, Ireland. It... |

We present in this paper the advantages of the latent class vector model approach in the analysis of preference ratings. We illustrate the practical application of this methodology on the basis of a preference study of smoked salmons in European countries. A set of 30 samples was selected spanning the characteristic variability of cold-smoked salmon available in six European countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom). Consumers from the main countries of consumption (Belgium, France, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom) were asked to rate the acceptability of each product. A quantitative descriptive analysis with a trained panel and physical and chemical measurements of smoked salmons were also conducted. Using a latent... |

The spreading rate at the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge (PAR) increases rapidly from 54 mm/yr near Pitman Fracture Zone (FZ) up to 76 mm/yr near Udintsev FZ, resulting in three domains of axial morphology: an axial valley south of Pitman FZ, an axial high north of Saint Exupery FZ, and in between, the transitional domain extends over 650 km. It comprises sections of ridge with an axial valley or an axial high and generally displays a very low cross-sectional relief. It is also characterized by two propagating rifts. Two domains of different seafloor roughness appear south of Udintsev FZ: east of 157 degreesW these two domains are separated by a 1000-km V-shaped boundary. West of 157 degreesW, the boundary approximately coincides with Chron 3a or Chron 4. The... |

This issue handles the ability of using segmentation results of sidescan sonar images for long term registration. This study take a part of AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) navigation problems, particularly to correct the drift of navigation sensors. Principle of images formation with this type of engines and the main properties are first reminded. Some images are shown, which allows us to understand difficulties of this type of data to realise AUV positioning. Then, we decide that segmentation results of sidescan images provide us landscapes on which registration will be able. Segmentation is then explained. It is supervised type on five classes, rocks, ripples, sand, mud and shadow. Using Gabor filters provides classifying parameters and... |

The Gulf of Aden is a young, obliquely opening, oceanic basin where tectonic structures can easily be followed and correlated from the passive margins to the active mid-oceanic ridge. It is an ideal laboratory for studies of continental lithosphere breakup from rifting to spreading. The northeastern margin of the Gulf of Aden offers the opportunity to study on land the deformation associated with oblique rifting over a wide area encompassing two segments of the passive margin, on either side of the Socotra fracture zone, exhibiting distinct morphologic, stratigraphic, and structural features. The western segment is characterized by an elevated rift shoulder and large grabens filled with thick synrift series, whereas the eastern segment exhibits low... |

Morphological sills condition sedimentary, water and fauna exchanges between different domains. In particular, sills are crucial factors to consider during the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) palaeogeographic evolution (5.97–5.33 Ma) of the NW Mediterranean area. Here we focus on the Ebro River and its up to now unexplained short Messinian onshore length (~100 km) compared to that of the Messinian Rhone River (~480 km) despite similar present-day drainage basins. Thanks to an extensive seismic and borehole dataset, we present a new interpretation of a complete 270 km long Messinian Ebro incised-valley system course underneath the present-day continental margin and bathyal basin and its related distal detrital deposits. These results favour a syn-MSC or... |

We present a detailed 3-D P-wave velocity model obtained by first-arrival travel-time tomography with seismic refraction data in the segment boundary of the Sumatra subduction zone across Simeulue Island, and an image of the top of the subducted oceanic crust extracted from depth-migrated multi-channel seismic reflection profiles. We have picked P-wave first arrivals of the air-gun source seismic data recorded by local networks of ocean-bottom seismometers, and inverted the travel-times for a 3-D velocity model of the subduction zone. This velocity model shows an anomalous zone of intermediate velocities between those of oceanic crust and mantle that is associated with raised topography on the top of the oceanic crust. We interpret this feature as a... |

This document presents a comparative assessment of four triannual analyses carried out between 1986 and 1995, on 1300 boats, on average, from the 35 ports of Southern Bay of Biscay fishing fleets (from Loire river to Spanish border). Fisheries statistics allow the identification of different fishing practices and fishing boats associated with them within the fleets. In order to allow comparison and analysis of the evolution that has taken place during the study period, the same variables (gear used, landed species) and multivariate analysis procedures have been used to produce groupings of vessels Over the period, an average of 11 components have been identified, grouped in two entities, mobile and fixed gears. If the discriminative characteristics (gears,... |

Magnetic and gravity data gathered during the Encens-Sheba cruise (2000 June) in the eastern Gulf of Aden provide insights on the structural evolution of segmentation from rifted margins to incipient seafloor spreading. In this study, we document the conjugate margins asymmetry, confirm the location of the ocean-continent transition (OCT) previously proposed by seismic data, and describe its deep structure and segmentation. In the OCT, gravity models indicate highly thinned crust while magnetic data indicate presence of non-oceanic high-amplitude magnetic anomalies where syn-rift sediments are not observed. Thus, the OCT could be made of ultra-stretched continental crust intruded by magmatic bodies. However, locally in the north, the nature of the OCT... |

Pork is a source of nutrients essential for the human body but still it is regarded by consumers as a non-healthy product. The main objective of the study was to analyse consumption patterns concerning pork products and to define alternative target markets in bigger Hungarian towns. In the course of the research, 494 people, representative of the base population, were questioned. According to the results obtained, the consumers’ opinion and the already formed image are less favourable regarding pork than poultry in almost all respects. Respondents regarded pork as an out-of-date, slightly boring and aging product. The applied cluster analysis identified five different consumer segments. Among them, rational young consumers represent the primary target... |

Typically, marketers define market segments by their demographic characteristics, assuming that these segments represent consumers with relatively homogeneous buying patterns. A more managerially useful definition, however, groups consumers of similar behavior directly and then seeks to find demographic commonalities among them. This study uses a latent class analysis technique to segment consumers based on their responsiveness to a set of marketing variables, finding that a multiple-segment model provides a better fit to the data, and that these segments differ significantly in their responsiveness. By targeting marketing activities to their most responsive segments, the efficiency of commodity promotion can be dramatically improved. |
