SOIL MESO- AND MACROFAUNA IN TWO SOYBEAN CROPS AFTER SWINE WASTEWATER APPLICATION REA
Maciel,Ana P. C.; Sampaio,Silvio C.; Remor,Marcelo B.; Rosa,Danielle M.; Reis,Ralpho R. Dos.
ABSTRACT Hog raising generates a large amount of residues that is commonly discarded into the soil as fertilizer even with environmental risks. In this context, the aim of this study was to assess the application effects of different doses of swine wastewater (SW) associated with mineral fertilization on the abundance and diversity of organisms of soil meso- and macrofauna in two soybean crops. Treatments consisted of four doses (0, 100, 200, and 300 m3 ha−1) of SW with or without mineral fertilization in two soybean crop, totaling 24 experimental units. Soil meso- and macrofauna were sampled using pitfall traps installed at each plot. Samples were sorted and the organisms were separated and identified. The highest abundances were found between groups of...

Terrestrial isopod diversity in the subtropical neotropics: Itapuã State Park, southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Almerão,Maurício P.; Mendonça Jr.,Milton de S.; Quadros,Aline F.; Pedó,Ezequiel; Silva,Luiz G. R.; Araujo,Paula Beatriz.
We analysed species abundance and composition during one year of sampling at Itapuã State Park, a conservation unit in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Samples were collected monthly from May 2003 to April 2004 along a 4 km forest trail divided in three transects along the slopes of a small hill. Terrestrial isopods were hand searched by three people for 40 minutes at two sampling sites along each transect, summing 240 minutes of sampling effort per transect per month. Six species distributed in six families were found. The collector curve stabilised when half the samples were taken, demonstrating sampling sufficiency: analytical estimates did not predict more species to be found in the trail. Atlantoscia floridana (van Name, 1940) was...

Structure and dynamics of soil macrofauna in tropical systems converted to pasture or agrosystems. Infoteca-e
NORTH CAROLINE STATE UNIVERSITY..
This report gives the result of macrofauna densities and biomasses, for the dry and rainy seasons, in five systems: 1) primary forest; 2) long-term pasture (15 years) (called old pasture); 3) long-term (11 years) abandoned (in 1992) pasture (called pasture degr); 4) short-term ( 5 years) abandoned (in 1987) pasture (called pasture aband); and 5) short-term (5 years) pasture turned to capoeira (in 1987) and then to agrosylvicultural systems in 1991 (called agsosylv.). Preliminary results: a) dry season - macrofauna biomasses and densitiesshowed high differences between plots; b) rainy season - the degraded pasture was notsampled at this date. A few macrofauna groups are dominante in these systems. Other groups less abundant were also present (Diptera...

Soil fauna and litter decomposition in primary and secondary forests and a mixed culture system in Amazonia. Infoteca-e
SHIFT PROJECT ENV 52..
The first months of the year were dedicated to preparatory work in Germany and in Brazil. In July we finished the unexpectedly time-and cost-intensive installation of a generator and no break system to maintain the functioning of extraction and analyzing equipment (Kempson and Berlese-extractor, C/N-analyzer and Infra-Red-Gasanalyzer IRGA) during the very frequent breakdowns of the power supply in the laboratory of the EMBRAPA institute. On 23/24 July the joint "central sampling program of macro-and mesofauna, oligochaeta and microflora which includes field and laboratory work was successfully tested. On 27 october the first litterbag series with 1008 litterbags containing air-dried Vismia-litter to evaluate site-specific decomposition rates was...

Soil termites in primary forest, secondary forest and an agroforestry plantation system in central Amazonia. Infoteca-e
MARTIUS, C.; GOMES, E.; GARCIA, M. V. B..
Litter and soil termites were collected with soil cores (21cm diameter) in a primary forest site, a secondary forest site and two sites of a polyculture plantation system in central Amazonia (Brazil), in three-monthly intervals from 1997 to 1999. Termite genus diversity, abundance and biomass all were highest in the primary forest. The values in the secondary forest were half those of the primary forest, and they were lowest in the plantation systems, indicating that the latter sites may suffer from functional constraints concerning the process of organic residue decomposition.

Nutrient scarcity strengthens soil fauna control over leaf litter decomposition in tropical rainforests ArchiMer
Peguero, Guille; Sardans, Jordi; Asensio, Dolores; Fernández-martínez, Marcos; Gargallo-garriga, Albert; Grau, Oriol; Llusià, Joan; Margalef, Olga; Márquez, Laura; Ogaya, Romà; Urbina, Ifigenia; Courtois, Elodie A.; Stahl, Clément; Van Langenhove, Leandro; Verryckt, Lore T.; Richter, Andreas; Janssens, Ivan A.; Peñuelas, Josep.
Soil fauna is a key control of the decomposition rate of leaf litter, yet its interactions with litter quality and the soil environment remain elusive. We conducted a litter decomposition experiment across different topographic levels within the landscape replicated in two rainforest sites providing natural gradients in soil fertility to test the hypothesis that low nutrient availability in litter and soil increases the strength of fauna control over litter decomposition. We crossed these data with a large dataset of 44 variables characterizing the biotic and abiotic microenvironment of each sampling point and found that microbe-driven carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) losses from leaf litter were 10.1 and 17.9% lower, respectively, in the nutrient-poorest site,...

The mesofauna has an important function in the soil and it is represented mainly by Acari Oribatida and Collembola. We report the first data on the density and diversity of the soil mesofauna in Benjamin Constant, Amazonas State, Brazil. The following systems were evaluated: primary forest, secondary forest, agroforestry system, cultivated areas and pastures. A total of 101 samples were collected 100 m apart from each other and specimens were collected by using Berlese-Tullgren method. The highest density was registered in secondary forest (29,776 specimens.m-2). Acari Oribatida was the dominant group (7.072 specimens.m-2) in the pasture, suggesting that mites show higher capacity of adaptation to disturbed environments and/or due to the presence of...

Minhocas em uma Pastagem Arborizada na Região Noroeste do Estado do Paraná, Brasil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Jardeveski, Roberta; Porfírio-da-Silva, Vanderley.

RELATIVE AND ABSOLUTE DENSITY ESTIMATES OF LAND PLANARIANS (PLATYHELMINTHES, TRICLADIDA) IN URBAN RAINFOREST PATCHES Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
CARBAYO,FERNANDO; MATARENSI JUNIOR,ODAIR; JUCÁ,MARÍLIA.
ABSTRACT Land planarians (Platyhelminthes) are likely important components of the soil cryptofauna, although relevant aspects of their ecology such as their density remain largely unstudied. We investigated absolute and relative densities of flatworms in three patches of secondary Brazilian Atlantic rainforest in an urban environment. Two methods of sampling were carried out, one consisting of 90 hours of active search in delimited plots covering 6,000 m² over a year, and the other consisting of leaf litter extraction from a 60 m² soil area, totaling 480-600 l leaf litter. We found 288 specimens of 16 species belonging to the genera Geobia, Geoplana, Issoca, Luteostriata, Obama, Paraba, Pasipha, Rhynchodemus, Xerapoa, and the exotic species Bipalium...

Relationship between macrofauna, mineralogy and exchangeable calcium and magnesium in Cerrado Oxisols under pasture PAB
Vendrame,Pedro Rodolfo Siqueira; Marchão,Robélio Leandro; Brito,Osmar Rodrigues; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima; Becquer,Thierry.
The objective of this work was to assess the relationship between macrofauna, mineralogy and exchangeable calcium and magnesium in Cerrado Oxisols under pasture. Twelve collection points were chosen in the Distrito Federal and in Formosa municipality, Goiás state, Brazil, representing four soil groups with varied levels of calcium + magnesium and kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite) ratios. Soil macrofauna was collected in triplicate at each collection point, and identified at the level of taxonomic groups. Macrofauna density showed correlation with contents of kaolinite, gibbsite and exchangeable Ca + Mg in the soils. Mineralogy and exchangeable Ca + Mg had significant effects on taxonomic groups and relative density of soil macrofauna. The termites...

Dynamics and vertical distribution of a Hrabeiella periglandulata (Annelida) population in South Moravia, Czech Republic PAB
Schlaghamerský,Jiří; Šídová,Adéla.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the density, dynamics and vertical distribution of a Hrabeiella periglandulata population in a forest soil at Brno, Czech Republic. From December 2003 to November 2004, two plots covered by mixed stands and two covered by coniferous stands were sampled monthly. Six soil cores per plot were taken down to 15 cm and subdivided into layers, which were subjected to wet funnel extraction. Missing in one of the coniferous stands H. periglandulata was abundant in the mixed stand with the highest soil pH. In this stand, monthly sampling continued until November 2005, with three additional samplings up to January 2007. Mean annual density was 2,672±1,534 individuals m-2. Population dynamics differed from those reported from...

Abundance and diversity of soil mites of fragmented habitats in a biosphere reserve in Southern Nigeria PAB
BADEJO,MOSADOLUWA ADETOLA; OLA-ADAMS,BUNY AMIN.
Soil samples were collected from the top 7.5 cm of soil in a Strict Natural Reserve (SNR), a surrounding buffer zone, a cassava farm and matured plantations of Gmelina, teak, and pine, so as to determine if plantation establishment and intensive cultivation affect the density and diversity of soil mites. Altogether, 41 taxonomic groups of mites were identified. The diversity and densities of mites in within the SNR, the buffer zone and the Gmelina were more than the diversity and densities in the cassava farm, teak and pine plantations. Each plantation had its own unique community structure which was different from the community structure in the SNR plot. The SNR plot and Gmelina were dominated by detritivorous cryptostigmatid mites unlike teak and pine...
