ABSTRACT Although anthropogenic dark earth (ADE) is generally found in non-floodable land, it also occurs on floodplains but, there is no information about the chemical and physical characteristics of ADE in this environment. In this study, we propose to check the hypothesis that a Gleysol, classified as ADE, presents improved chemical and physical conditions than an adjacent soil, no anthropogenic. Thus, the objective of this study was to characterize the chemical and physical properties of the top layer of two ADE profiles in a Gleysol and compare them with an adjacent soil. Samples were taken from two areas classified as ADE in Bragança, Pará State, Brazil, at the "Jabuti" archaeological site, and from an adjacent non-anthropogenic site. Disturbed and... |

This experiment was conducted to evaluate of two promising rainfed wheat cultivars as affected by different seeding rate in conventional and conservation tillage systems in the research field of the Dryland Agriculture Research Institute (DARI), Sararood branch, Kermanshah, Iran. The experiment layout designed as strip-split plot in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications during two consecutive growing seasons 2017-18 and 2018-19. The tillage systems were placed next to each other as a separate site at two levels: conventional tillage and conservation tillage (no tillage). Wheat cultivars were performed horizontally at two levels (Baran and Rijaw) and the seeding rate was carried out vertically with eight levels (75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200,... |

Aggregate stability is an important factor of the soil functioning. Greater aggregate stability leads to greater soil organic carbon (SOC) preservation, while SOC acts as a key cementing agent in aggregation processes. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of native vegetation conversion in soil aggregate stability and SOC concentration. The investigation was conducted in the Vojvodina Province, Serbia, in July 2009. Undisturbed soil samples were taken from Haplic Chernozem, Haplic Fluvisol and Gleyic Vertisol, at a depth ranging from 0 to 20 cm. A completely randomized experimental design was used with three replicates. Each soil type was considered under treatments 1) cropland >100 years, 2) native meadow and 3) native... |

Inappropriate soil management practices that have been applied in the Yafacuy River basin, Venezuela, have led to the loss of soil organic matter and crop productivity. The incorporation of composted organic residues has been suggested as an alternative management practice in order to increase organic matter (OM) content and crop yield in these soils. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different application fates of an organic fertilizer obtained from sugarcane industry wastes, filter cake and bagasse with or without inorganic fertilizers, on microbial biomass carbon (MB-C), soil organic carbon (SOC), maize (Zea mays L.) yield and N, P, K content in the maize leaves, in Yafacuy River basin. The experiments were established in an... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the short- and medium-term effect of biochar on soil microbial properties, organic carbon and nitrogen in an Oxisol from Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design consisting of five levels of biochar (0, 2, 4, 8 and 16 Mg∙ha–1) with and without of synthetic fertilizer: 0 and 200 kg.ha–1 of synthetic fertilizer N-P-K (00-20-20). The following soil properties were determined: microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN), microbial respiration (MR), metabolic quotient (qCO2) and microbial quotient (qMIC), total organic carbon (TOC) and nitrogen (TN). The MBC, qCO2 and carbon management index (CMI) were not altered by doses of fertilizer and biochar. The presence of biochar reduced... |

The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of a long-term experiment on soil spectral properties and to develop prediction models of these properties (soil organic carbon (SOC), N, pH, Hh, P2O5, K2O, Ca, Mg, K, and Na content) from texturally homogeneous samples (loamy sand). To this aim, chemometric techniques, such as partial least square (PLS) regression and support vector machine (SVM) classification, were used. Our results show that visible and near infrared spectroscopy (VIS-NIRS) is suitable for the prediction of properties of texturally homogeneous samples. The effects of fertilizer applications were sufficient to modify the soil chemical composition to a range suitable for using VIS-NIRS for calibration and modeling purposes.... |

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the physical quality of an Oxisol under no-tillage subjected to different crop rotations and crop sequences. The experiment was carried out in a clayey Oxisol, during six years, in a randomized complete block design, with strip plots and three replicates. The following physical indicators of soil quality were evaluated: soil density and carbon content, as well as mean weight diameter and tensile strength of aggregates. Treatments consisted of three summer crop rotations - corn/corn (Zea mays), soybean/soybean (Glycine max), and soybean/corn - and of seven second crops (crop sequences) - corn, sunflower (Helianthus annuus), oilseed radish (Raphanus sativus), pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum), pigeon pea... |
