Fast immersion to test the stability of aggregates in water: consequences for interpreting results from tropical soil classes Agronomy
Silva, Rodrigo Fonseca da; Cipriano, Patriciani Estela; Siueia Junior, Matias; Mars, Geslin; Dias Junior, Moacir de Souza.
Aggregates are the primary structural components of soil and have been used as an indicator of soil quality in conservation systems. The objective of this study was to analyse the effect of slow pre-wetting on the results of the aggregate stability test for different classes of tropical soils. Data were arranged in a 2 x 4 factorial design with three replications, in which the first factor comprised the two methods of pre-treatment on soil aggregates: without pre-wetting (WOPW), which considered the moisture of the aggregates in the field, and with pre-wetting (WPW), which considered the slow wetting of aggregates through capillarity on wet filter paper for 24h. The second factor consisted of four soil classes: Typic Dystrustept (Cambissolo Aplico...

Effects of land use conversion on soil aggregate stability and organic carbon in different soils Agrociencia
Ćirić,Vladimir; Manojlović,Maja; Belić,Milivoj; Nešić,Ljiljana; Šeremešić,Srdan.
Aggregate stability is an important factor of the soil functioning. Greater aggregate stability leads to greater soil organic carbon (SOC) preservation, while SOC acts as a key cementing agent in aggregation processes. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of native vegetation conversion in soil aggregate stability and SOC concentration. The investigation was conducted in the Vojvodina Province, Serbia, in July 2009. Undisturbed soil samples were taken from Haplic Chernozem, Haplic Fluvisol and Gleyic Vertisol, at a depth ranging from 0 to 20 cm. A completely randomized experimental design was used with three replicates. Each soil type was considered under treatments 1) cropland >100 years, 2) native meadow and 3) native...

Chemical migration during soil water retention curve evaluation Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pires,Luiz F.; Villanueva,Felipe C.A.; Dias,Nivea M.P.; Bacchi,Osny O. Santos; Reichardt,Klaus.
Wetting and drying (W-D) cycles can induce important elemental migrations in soils. The main purpose of this work was to study the possible existence of soil chemical elemental migrations in samples submitted to repeated W-D cycles during evaluations of soil water retention curve (SWRC). The experimental measurements were carried out by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) for Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ on samples of three different Brazilian tropical soils (Geric Ferralsol, Eutric Nitosol and Rhodic Ferralsol). Results demonstrate an increase in the electrical conductivity of the water extracted from the samples and significant losses of Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ during the applications of up to nine W-D cycles. It was also observed differences in SWRC for all soils when...

Soil aggregation and carbon stabilization in burn and no-burn sugarcane management systems Anais da ABC (AABC)
GUIMARÃES,MARIA DE FÁTIMA; OLIVEIRA,JOSÉ F. DE; TELLES,TIAGO S.; MACHADO,WALQUÍRIA; BARBOSA,GRAZIELA M.C.; TAVARES FILHO,JOÃO.
ABSTRACT Retaining sugarcane straw over the soil after harvesting can improve soil structure and increase soil carbon stabilization, mainly in macroaggregates. We evaluated the carbon content in the aggregate classes in areas under burn and no-burn (adopted for five years) sugarcane management systems, focusing on the superficial layer (0.00-0.20 m). The experiment was carried in an Oxisol and the treatments consisted in burnt sugarcane, manual harvest; burnt sugarcane, mechanized harvest; and no-burn, mechanized harvest. The retention of sugarcane straw on the soil surface is justified by the increase in carbon content and carbon stock in the surface layer (0.00-0.20 m) by restructuring of the soil, even though it cannot match the structure of the soil...

Pore system changes of damaged Brazilian oxisols and nitosols induced by wet-dry cycles as seen in 2-D micromorphologic image analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pires,Luiz F.; Reichardt,Klaus; Cooper,Miguel; Cássaro,Fabio A.M.; Dias,Nivea M.P.; Bacchi,Osny O.S..
Soil pore structure characterization using 2-D image analysis constitutes a simple method to obtain essential information related to soil porosity and pore size distribution (PSD). Such information is important to infer on soil quality, which is related to soil structure and transport processes inside the soil. Most of the time soils are submitted to wetting and drying cycles (W-D), which can cause important changes in soils with damaged structures. This report uses 2-D image analysis to evaluate possible modifications induced by W-D cycles on the structure of damaged soil samples. Samples of three tropical soils (Geric Ferralsol, GF; Eutric Nitosol, EN; and Rhodic Ferralsol, RF) were submitted to three treatments: 0WD, the control treatment in which...

Relationship between raindrops and ultrasonic energy on the disruption of a Haplic Cambisol Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ribeiro,Bruno Teixeira; Lima,José Maria de; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Sá,Marcos Aurélio Carolino de; Oliveira,Geraldo César de.
The aim of this work was to compare aggregate disruption of undisturbed soil samples by ultrasonic energy to aggregate disruption caused by the energy of simulated raindrops, to provide equations that can describe this relationship, and to evaluate whether aggregate stability, expressed by sonication method, may be used to estimate the effect that raindrops have on undisturbed soil samples. Undisturbed soil samples from A, Bi and C horizons of a Cambisol were submitted to different levels of ultrasonic energy and simulated raindrops. Sieved samples (aggregates) were also submitted to different levels of ultrasonic energy so that both disturbed and undisturbed conditions of samples could be compared. The results showed that the method using ultrasonic...

Software Image J to study soil pore distribution Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Passoni,Sabrina; Borges,Fernando da Silva; Pires,Luiz Fernando; Saab,Sérgio da Costa; Cooper,Miguel.
In the soil science, a direct method that allows the study of soil pore distribution is the bi-dimensional (2D) digital image analysis. Such technique provides quantitative results of soil pore shape, number and size. The use of specific softwares for the treatment and processing of images allows a fast and efficient method to quantify the soil porous system. However, due to the high cost of commercial softwares, public ones can be an interesting alternative for soil structure analysis. The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of data provided by the Image J software (public domain) used to characterize the voids of two soils, characterized as Geric Ferralsol and Rhodic Ferralsol, from the southeast region of Brazil. The pore distribution...

Mineralogia, estrutura e comportamento físico-hídrico de Latossolos brasileiros e comparação com solos de regiões temperadas. Infoteca-e
OTTONI, M. V.; SOUZA, L. R.; BARBOSA, S. M.; ANDRADE, R.; TEIXEIRA, W. G.; INDA, A. V.; CURI, N..
The association between the mineralogy of the clay fraction, the structure and the physico-hydraulic behavior of the Brazilian Latosols (Oxisols) is addressed here in a global, simple, objective, and instructive context. The simplicity of the mineralogical composition of the clay fraction of Latosols facilitates the understanding of cause and effect relationships in this context. Higher kaolinite contents favor the manifestation of the blocky structure, resulting in higher bulk density values, lower water infiltration rates, and lower potential aquifer recharge. Conversely, higher levels of gibbsite and Fe-oxide minerals (mainly hematite and goethite), in this order, favor the small granular structure of high stability in the subsurface horizon (B) of the...

THE ROLE OF SOIL STRUCTURE ON THE PORE FUNCTIONALITY OF AN ULTISOL J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Dorner,J; Sandoval,P; Dec,D.
A Typic Hapludult was used to evaluate the effect of soil structure and different bulk densities (reached after the destruction of macro aggregates) on functional characteristics of the pore system. The water retention curve, pore-size distribution, shrinkage curve and index were determined in disturbed and structured samples. To evaluate the effect of soil structure on the continuity of the pore system the air permeability at different matrix potentials was measured. From the relationship between the air permeability and air-filled porosity, pore continuity indexes were calculated. The destruction of the soil structure affects the function of its pores. The amount of air-filled pores increased with the reduction of the bulk density, however, the stability...

Injection of liquid swine slurry and effects on properties of a Nitossolo Vermelho PAB
Rech,Cleber; Albuquerque,Jackson Adriano; Corrêa,Juliano Corulli; Mafra,Alvaro Luiz; Bortolini,Diego.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the superficial and injected applications of swine slurry and urea to the soil, regarding their effects on the physical properties of a Nitossolo Vermelho distroférrico under a no-tillage system. The treatments were: injected slurry into the groove with a liquid swine slurry injector (LSSI); slurry on surface, applied on the lines by the LSSI kept raised; urea injected by opening the groove with the LSSI and distributed manually; and corn, under no-tillage, as a control. Sowing and the injection of liquid slurry or urea do not modify the organic carbon content, pH, and aggregation, but alter the soil bulk density and porosity in the mobilized line, and increase the macropores.
