Two new taxa in Cyrtopodium (orchidaceae) from southern Brazil Darwiniana
Batista,João A. N.; Bianchetti,Luciano B..
kleinii is similar to a group of terrestrial species characterized by their small pseudobulbs, buried underground, and small flowers, but it can be distinguished by the color of its flowers, lip lateral lobes slightly or not falcate and subequal in length and width, lip midlobe base with little or no constriction, and geographical distribution. Cyrtopodium brandonianum subsp. lageanum is similar in general flower color to typical C. brandonianum, but it can be distinguished by its earlier flowering, leaves poorly developed at anthesis and different shape and colour of the lip. Both taxa are rare and only known from southern Brazil.

Association between human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA and micronuclei in normal cervical cytology Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cassel,Ana Paula Rebelo; Barcellos,Regina Bones; Silva,Cláudia Maria Dornelles da; Almeida,Sabrina Esteves de Matos; Rossetti,Maria Lucia Rosa.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between HPV-DNA and micronucleus (MN) frequency in women with normal cervical cytology. A total of 158 normal cervical smears were analyzed cytologically. The HPV genome was amplified using the GP5+/bioGP6+ consensus primers. HPV-DNA of high-risk types 16, 18, 31, 33, 39, 45 and 59 were also investigated. Of the 158 samples, 20 (12.7%) and 47 (29.7%) were positive for HPV-DNA and MN, respectively. Evidence for MN was found in 11 out of 20 (55%) HPV-DNA positive samples and in 36 out of 138 (26.1%) HPV-DNA negative ones. MN presence was significantly higher in HPV-DNA positive samples (p = 0.016). On the other hand, the absence of MN observed in a considerable number of HPV-DNA negative samples...

Species richness and community structure of arboreal spider assemblages in fragments of three vegetational types at Banhado Grande wet plain, Gravataí River, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Bonaldo,Alexandre B.; Marques,Maria Aparecida L.; Pinto-da-Rocha,Ricardo; Gardner,Toby.
The taxonomic composition, observed and estimated species richness, and patterns of community structure of arboreal spider assemblages in eleven sites surrounding the "Banhado Grande" wet plain in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, are presented. These sites represent three different vegetational types: hillside (four sites), riparian (five sites) and flooded forests (two sites). The spiders were captured by beating on foliage and "aerial litter". A sample was defined as the result of beating on twenty bushes, tree branches or "aerial litter" clusters, which roughly corresponds to one-hour search effort per sample. Fifty five samples (five per site) were obtained, resulting in an observed richness of 212 species present as adult or identifiable...

Feeding ecology in the small neotropical amphisbaenid Amphisbaena munoai (Amphisbaenidae) in southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Bernardo-Silva,Jorge S.; Von-Mühlen,Eduardo M.; Di-Bernardo,Marcos; Ketterl,Jochen.
We analyzed the alimentary tract of 66 specimens of Amphisbaena munoai Klappenbach, 1969 from the Serra do Sudeste, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Forty specimens (60.6%) had prey items in their gut. The diet consisted mainly of small invertebrate prey, such as termites, insect larvae and ants. The most abundant prey item was termites, found in 62.5% of the non empty stomachs. The high number of individual prey items in the majority of stomachs, the small size of the regular prey items, and the absence of gut content in specimens of A. munoai kept alive for about two days, indicate that this species forages very frequently. The predominance of fossorial prey items and the occasional records of nomadic ants lead us to suggest that A. munoai...

Silvopastoral systems in the cold zone of Brazil. Infoteca-e
VARELLA, A. C.; BARRO, R. S.; SILVA, J. L. S. da; PORFIRIO-DA-SILVA, V.; SAIBRO, J. C. de.
The cold zone of Brazil occupies approximately 6 % of the national territory and is located between latitudes 24° S and 33° S. In this area, extensive cattle and sheep farming systems and conventional cropping and forestry are predominant. With the end of government subsidies by the decade of 1980s, an increase in farming production costs, a decrease of native forest covering, an increase of degraded areas in agriculture and livestock farming systems and a mismatch between timber national supply and demand after 1990s, an opportunity arises for integrate forestry with livestock and agriculture activities in Brazil, particularly in the southern. This chapter initially reports key events over the last three decades that have supported the increasing interest...

Cyanoaggregatum brasiliense gen. et sp. nov., a new chroococcal Cyanobacteria from Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Werner,Vera Regina; Sant'anna,Célia Leite; Azevedo,Maria Teresa de Paiva.
The paper proposed Cyanoaggregatum brasiliense, a new genus and species from the plankton of a subtropical brackish coastal lagoon from Rio Grande do Sul State, South Brazil. It differs from all other members of Chroococcales by its characteristic arrangement of cells in irregular groups distributed in a single, flat or slightly curved layer, on irregular rows, slightly distant from each other, forming a mosaic-like pattern slightly below the surface of the mucilaginous colonial envelope. The cell division in one plane perpendicular to the long axis and the lack of pseudo-filaments indicate its classification in the family Synechococcaceae, sub-family Aphanothecoideae. The general characteristics, the diagnostic criteria and the taxonomic position are...
