Bivalves from the Triassic-Jurassic transition in northern Spain (Asturias and western Basque-Cantabrian Basin) Ameghiniana
Márquez-Aliaga,Ana; Damborenea,Susana; Gómez,Juan José; Goy,Antonio.
Bivalve mollusks from the Triassic-Jurassic transition collected in eight localities in Asturias and the western Basque-Cantabrian Basin (Palencia province) are systematically revised. Preservation is poor at all localities. The dominant Rhaetian bivalves are Isocyprina concentrica (Moore) and Bakevellia (Bakevelloides) praecursor (Quenstedt). These species, together with Isocyprina cf. ewaldi (Bornemann), Pteromya cf. crowcombeia (Moore), Pseudoplacunopsis alpina (Winkler), and Modiolus? sp. (cf. minimus J. Sowerby), with a specimen of Arcestidae (?), belong to an assemblage similar to that found in the Westbury and Lilstock formations (Penarth Group) in the late Rhaetian of southern England. The most abundant Hettangian species is Isocyprina...

Toxic cyanobacteria strains isolated from blooms in the Guadiana River (southwestern Spain) Biol. Res.
MORENO,ISABEL M; PEREIRA,PAULO; FRANCA,SUSANA; CAMEÁN,ANA.
This paper describes the occurrence of toxic cyanobacteria along the Guadiana River over its course between Mérida and Badajoz (Extremadura, Spain). Water sampling for phytoplankton quantification and toxin analysis was carried out regularly between 1999 and 2001 in six different locations, including two shallow, slow-flowing river sites, two streamed river sites and two drinking water reservoirs. The cyanobacterial community differed significantly between these locations, especially during the summer. The predominant genera were Microcystis, Oscillatoria, Aphanizomenon and Anabaena. Using an ELISA assay the total microcystin contents of natural water samples from the most eutrophic locations ranged from 0.10 _ 21.86 mg mcyst-LR equivalent·L-1 in...

Stakeholder participation is becoming increasingly important in water resources management. In participatory processes, stakeholders contribute by putting forward their own perspective, and they benefit by enhancing their understanding of the factors involved in decision making. A diversity of modeling tools can be used to facilitate participatory processes. Bayesian networks are well suited to this task for a variety of reasons, including their ability to structure discussions and visual appeal. This research focuses on developing and testing a set of evaluation criteria for public participation. The advantages and limitations of these criteria are discussed in the light of a specific participatory modeling initiative. Modeling work was conducted in the...

The Systems Approach Framework as a Complementary Methodology of Adaptive Management: a Case Study in the Urban Beaches of Barcelona Ecology and Society
The Systems Approach Framework is a methodological framework designed to enhance the efficacy of human decision-making processes within social-ecological systems with regard to sustainability. The objective of resilience adaptive management is to either maintain the system within the current regime such that the desired ecosystem goods and services continue to be delivered, or to move the system phase to a preferred regime. Although the objectives of the two frameworks are not exactly the same, there are considerable complementarities between them. Through application of the Systems Approach Framework in a case study regarding the urban beaches of Barcelona, Spain, we present some of the main findings revealed during the model construction and stakeholder...

Water Management in Spain: the Role of Policy Entrepreneurs in Shaping Change Ecology and Society
The role played by policy entrepreneurs in preparing, initiating, and implementing water policy change in Spain over the last two decades is examined in an effort to understand how transitions in water management occur. The main questions considered are whether policy entrepreneurs can influence water policy change, and which strategies they actually adopt to promote change. John Kingdon's multiple streams framework was used to assess the ways in which policy entrepreneurs succeed in challenging the dominant agenda, mobilizing alternative policy ideas, and making use of multiple venues for initiating policy change. The data set comprises secondary documentation and interviews with state and non-state actors involved in Spanish water management. The main...

Speciation in Cyprinidae of the Iberic Peninsula. ArchiMer
Almaca, Carlos.
Coming from Oriental Asia and Siberia, the Cyprinidae reached the Iberic Peninsula probably at the end of the Oligocene. Their populations bore speciation processes which led to the formation of a fauna rich in endemic species and subspecies. Populations of two of the genera Barbus and Pseudophoxinus reached Northwestern African forming there several endemic species. Concerning the speciation forms, it is probable that the allopatric form, whether by foundation effect or by subdivision, played an important part. Pyrenees and Mediterranean Sea settled probably efficient barriers for the Iberic Cyprinidae isolation. The present geographical repartition of Cyprinidae in Iberic Peninsula suggests that altitude lines and glaciations which reached the north of...

La culture suspendue de Chlamys varia , de la nourricerie a la taille commerciale, en Galice (Espagne) ArchiMer
Cancelo, M; Guerra, A; Fernandez, A; Gabin, C; Fernandez, J.
Chlamys varia has a great potential of culture in Galicia, and it is likely to be among the pectinids, both a complement and an alternative to raft mussel culture which is dominant in the region. The present work attempts to analyse the growth of nursery spat of 6.46 plus or minus 0.75 mm reared in a raft during fifteen months in different depth and densities. The final average height is between 36.49 plus or minus 0.56 mm in the group of high density in the bottom and 40.75 plus or minus 0.55 mm in those of low density at the surface. Different culture densities have shown significant differences in growth (p < 0.001). However, different depths have not shown such differences. At the end of this period mortality is lower than 2% in all groups.

Influence de l'azote et du phosphore sur la croissance et la toxicité de Prorocentrum lima (Ehrenberg) Dodge ArchiMer
Morlaix, Martine; Lassus, Patrick.
Very few attempts have been made in order to investigate the role of nutrients on cellular growth and toxin production in dinoflagellates associated with DSP (Diarrhetic Shellfish Poison). Some preliminary results are presented here, aiming at a better knowledge of inorganic nitrogen and organic phosphorus effects upon division rate and toxin content of Prorocentrum lima (PL2V spanish strain). Nitrogen have a positive effect on growth rate, up to a threshold value of 880muM.l-1. Above this threshold the rate decreases. There is no effect on toxin content since okadaic acid and DTX1 cell contents remain low (4.8 +/- 0.5 pg.cell.-1) and steady. Phosphorus effect upon division rate follows a non-linear relationship, whereas cellular toxic content is inversely...

Pseudocriboconcha prinsi gen. et sp. nov. (Ostracoda) from the late Mississippian (Carboniferous) of the Cantabrian Zone (northern Spain) Naturalis
Sánchez de Posada, L.C.; Sanz-López, J..
A new ostracod found in the Mississippian of the Cantabrian Mountains shows ornamental features similar to Criboconcha Cooper, hitherto known from Mississippian and Pennsylvanian strata of different parts of the world (especially from the U.S.A.). However, some features of this ostracod are very different from the typical characteristcs of the Healdiidae and support bairdiocyproidean affinities. The new genus Pseudocriboconcha (type species Pseudocriboconcha prinsi sp. nov.) is proposed. This species is distinguishedby distinct pits on the lateral surface; a posterior ridge ending in dorsal and ventral spines; a rounded rim parallel to the borders of each valve; and a spine on this rim, above the anterior end and directed dorsally or anterodorsally.

Correlates between morphology, diet and foraging mode in the Ladder Snake Rhinechis scalaris (Schinz, 1822) Naturalis
Pleguezuelos, J.M.; Fernández-Cardenete, J.R.; Honrubia, S.; Feriche, M.; Villafranca, C..
In many vertebrates, foraging mode (active versus sit-and-wait) is tied to some traits of their natural history such as morphology, type of prey, rate of food acquisition, and survival rate. We explore the correlates between some morphological traits of a Mediterranean colubrid and its feeding ecology and the predation risk, by comparing data on teeth number, tail damage, and diet. A large sample (n = 368) of the Ladder Snake, Rhinechis scalaris is used. The species feeds almost exclusively on endotherms, mainly mammals (nearly 95% of the diet in mass), which set R. scalaris among the most stenophagous snakes in the western Palaearctic. There is also a high percentage of motionless prey in the diet (up to 50% in prey mass), such as nestling birds, mammals...
