If rays are traditionally fished for their caudal fins, the rest of the body is wasted, except part of the skin that can be transformed into leather. Liver oil of the ray, Himantura bleekeri, was characterized in terms of lipid class composition and fatty acid profile. Liver oil content was high and represented 54% of the liver weight (w/w). Neutral lipids were predominant (92%), major components being triacylglycerols (63%). Other neutral lipids identified were hydrocarbons, sterol esters, mono- and di-acylglycerols, free fatty acids, sterols and glyceryl ethers. Polyunsaturated fatty acids of the n-3 series, namely eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids, were high (4% and 16%, respectively). Cholesterol was the major component in the sterol fractions... |

Knowledge on the energy distribution during the reproductive cycle of the giant lion-paw scallop, Nodipecten subnodosus is limited, but necessary for aquaculture purposes. In a previous work, we found that natural food availability can sustain the full cost of gametogenesis in optimal environmental conditions. The present study analyses the lipid and sterol classes' composition of several tissues during gametogenesis. In female gonads, the quantity of triacylglycerol (TG) increased parallel to gametogenesis from December (spawned gonads, 0.7 mg g(-1) or 7% of total lipids) to June (ripe gonads, 52 mg g(-1) or 66% of total lipids). In male gonads sampled in June, the concentration of TG (0.7 mg g(-1) or 3.5% of total lipids) and esterified sterols was... |

Acylated Steryl Glucosides (ASGs) are unsaponified matters that are ubiquitously distributed in edible plant sources, for example barley, maize and brown rice. ASGs in pre-germinated brown rice have reported to improve insulin activity and blood glucose control mechanisms in the diabetic condition through the activation of insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and increasing of IGF-1 production. Recently, the medical studies confirm that dietary intake of brown and pre-germinated brown rice is useful for alleviating symptoms of both diabetes and pre-diabetes. To improve the functional dietary intake of Thai rice, identification of ASGs in seven varieties, namely: Khao Dawk Mali 105, PTT1, RD31, Sang Yod, RD6, Niaw Dam Chum Pae and Niaw Dam Maw, brown and... |

Dietary intake of pre-germinated brown rice has been reported as alleviating symptoms of diabetes and pre-diabetes. Later, the corresponding bioactive compound was identified as Acylated Steryl Glucosides (ASGs) which was found to be a bioactive substance that may affect pancreatic-cells through the activation of insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) dependent mechanisms in the diabetic condition. To improve the functional dietary intake of Thai rice, identification of ASGs in seven varieties, namely: Khao DawkMali 105, PTT1, RD31, Sang yod, RD6, Niaw Dam Chum Pae and Niaw Dam Maw, brown and pre-germinated Thai rice varieties were carried out. Brown and pregerminated rice were analyzed to search for ASGs using GC-MS to identify the sterol moieties, and... |
