Constraining the age of the last geomagnetic reversal from geochemical and magnetic analyses of Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Ocean sediments ArchiMer
Valet, Jean-pierre; Bassinot, Franck; Simon, Quentin; Savranskaia, Tatiana; Thouveny, Nicolas; Bourlés, Didier L.; Villedieu, Anouk.
We studied four marine sediment records of the Matuyama–Brunhes geomagnetic reversal from four sites located in the Indian, Atlantic and western Pacific oceans. The results combine paleomagnetic, cosmogenic nuclide beryllium (10Be) and oxygen isotope analyses that were performed on the same samples in order to avoid any stratigraphic bias. The three records from the equatorial Indian Ocean and North Atlantic Ocean did not reveal any offset between the authigenic 10Be/9Be ratio (Be-ratio) peak and the interval of low relative paleointensity (RPI) that characterizes the reversal. The lower and upper limits of transitional directions are also concomitant with the increased atmospheric 10Be production that accompanied the geomagnetic dipole intensity decrease....

Subseafloor stratigraphic profiling and soil classification from piezocone tests: A case study in the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Lafuerza, S.; Frigola, J.; Canals, M.; Jouet, Gwenael; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Sultan, Nabil; Berne, Serge.
We show the results provided by piezocone tests in determining the stratigraphic profile and the soil classification of two drilling sites in the outer shelf and the upper slope of the Gulf of Lion, PRGL2 and PRGL1, respectively. Correlations with grain-size data indicate that sleeve friction can be used for profiling fine-grained sediments (site PRGL1), whereas cone tip resistance is the most adequate for sequences made of alternations of coarse- and fine-grained intervals (site PRGL2). Normalized cone resistance and friction ratio proved to be also appropriate for soil stratigraphy as it depicts trends in the coarse fraction of the tested soil. Silts and clays present in similar proportions at site PRGL1 responded to piezocone testing as pure clays...

Evolution of the danube deep-sea fan since the last glacial maximum: New insights into Black Sea water-level fluctuations ArchiMer
Constantinescu, Adriana; Toucanne, Samuel; Dennielou, Bernard; Jorry, Stephan; Mulder, T.; Lericolais, Gilles.
The Danube Deep-Sea Fan (NW Black Sea) is one of the most developed deep-sea sediment depositional systems in Europe. Although the morphology and the architecture have been widely described in the past years, little is known about the stratigraphy of this depositional system. For the late Quaternary, this results from the lack of significant stratigraphic markers, the scarcity of radiocarbon ages and the difficulty in constraining reservoir ages. Recent robust quantification of reservoir ages has allowed the construction of a new stratigraphic framework for the Black Sea from the end of the last glacial period to the Holocene, thus giving the opportunity to correlate sedimentological and geochemical features previously described on the NW Black Sea margin...

Stratigraphy and sedimentary environments during the Late Quaternary, in the Eastern Bohai Sea (North China Platform) ArchiMer
Marsset, Tania; Xia, D; Berne, Serge; Liu, Z; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Wang, K.
The Bohai Sea is a shallow sea at the east coast of China. It communicates with the Yellow Sea through a narrow strait. During and since the Late Pleistocene, the Bohai Sea has been a filled subsiding basin submitted to successive regressive-transgressive cycles. In the East Bohai Sea, a number of finger-shaped ridges are present near the strait, where tidal currents are dominant. Very-high resolution seismic reflection data have been interpreted relative to sedimentological data provided by a formerly drilled borehole. Seven seismic units are identified and correlated with the following events: units U7-U6 with the Bohai relative sea level rise (65,000–53,000 yr B.P.) and a relative sea level fall (53,000–39,000 yr B.P.); unit U5 with the Xianxian...

Holocene biostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental changes in the Black Sea based on calcareous nannoplankton ArchiMer
Giunta, Simona; Morigi, Caterina; Negri, Alessandra; Guichard, Francois; Lericolais, Gilles.
In this study, detailed micropaleontological analyses were carried out on 270 samples from eight piston cores collected in the Black Sea. The primary goal was to elucidate the Late Quaternary evolution of the Black Sea, specifically to refine its biostratigraphy and to explore the Holocene paleoenvironmental changes. Three intervals were recognized in all the cores studied, irrespective of whether they were from the basin or the shelf. These intervals are characterized, from old to young, by the spotty occurrence, the presence and the local acme of Emiliania huxleyi respectively. Moreover, the species Braarudosphaera bigelowii is, in contrast to the younger units, absent in the oldest unit. The co-occurrence of the two marine species E. huxleyi and B....

Environmental change in the Sea of Okhotsk during the last 1.1 million years ArchiMer
Nurnberg, D; Tiedemann, R.
On the basis of two sedimentary records from the central Sea of Okhotsk, we reconstruct the closely coupled glacial/interglacial changes in terrigenous flux, marine productivity, and sea ice coverage over the past 1.1 Myr. The correspondance of our sedimentary records to the China loess grain size record ( China loess particle timescale, CHILOPARTS) suggests that environmental changes in both the Sea of Okhotsk area and in SE Asia were closely related via the Siberian atmospheric high-pressure cell. During full glacial times our records point to a strong Siberian High causing northerly wind directions, the extension of the sea ice cover, and a reduced Amur River discharge. Deglacial maxima of terrigenous flux were succeeded by or synchronous to...

Geophysical characterization of bottom simulating reflectors in the Fairway Basin (off New Caledonia, Southwest Pacific), based on high resolution seismic profiles and heat flow data ArchiMer
Nouze, Herve; Cosquer, Emmanuel; Collot, Julien; Foucher, Jean-paul; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Lafoy, Yves; Geli, Louis.
High-resolution reflection and refraction seismic data were collected in 2004 to investigate, in further detail than allowed by pre-existing low resolution seismic data, the nature of a Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR) that extends over a broad area of the Fairway Basin, a rifted, continental structure located on the eastern flank of the Lord Howe Rise, to the southwest of New Caledonia. Two main reflectors are documented: the shallower (RN) mimics the seafloor and has a negative polarity while the deeper (RP) does not always mimic the seafloor and has a positive polarity. Using the existing regional seismic lines, we can show that reflector RN can be continuously followed up to DSDP 208 drill hole site. Reflector RP is discontinuous and cannot be traced...

Factors controlling margin instability during the Plio-Quaternary in the Gela Basin (Strait of Sicily, Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Gauchery, Tugdual; Rovere, Marzia; Pellegrini, Claudio; Cattaneo, Antonio; Campiani, Elisabetta; Trincardi, Fabio.
This study presents novel findings on the Pliocene and Quaternary evolution of the Gela Basin (Strait of Sicily, Mediterranean Sea), an area recording the interaction between tectonics, climate change at a Milankovitch and sub-Milankovitch timescales, and dynamic water masses exchange between the eastern and western Mediterranean Sea. The calibration of seismic profiles with exploration boreholes allowed for the refining the chronostratigraphic framework of the Gela Basin and highlighted the main phases of margin growth. Since the Pliocene, the margin has recorded the deposition of 100 m high shelf-edge clinothems, accompanied by sediment drifts on the slope and mass-transport deposits (MTDs), possibly triggered by seismic activity. Through the...

The stratigraphy and regional structure of Miocene deposits in western Amazonia (Peru, Colombia and Brazil), with implications for late Neogene landscape evolution Naturalis
Wesselingh, F.P.; Hoorn, M.C.; Guerrero, J.; Räsänen, M.E.; Romero Pittmann, L.; Salo, J.A..
A biozonation based on molluscs is proposed for Miocene deposits of western Amazonia (Peru, Colombia and Brazil), commonly referred to as the Pebas Formation. The new zonation refines existing pollen zonations and provides a key for the quick assessment of the stratigraphic position of Neogene deposits in the field. The regional distribution of twelve mollusc zones reveals a structuring of geological units around the broad Iquitos-Araracuara anteclise. The structure of the subsurface appears to have been a major factor in the determination of present-day second and lower order river courses in the study area. Based on this work a biostratigraphic framework for Miocene deposits of western Amazonia, including fossiliferous deposits from adjacent basins...

Landscape evolution and depositional processes in the Miocene Amazonian Pebas lake/wetland system: evidence from exploratory boreholes in northeastern Peru. Naturalis
Wesselingh, F.P.; Guerrero, J.; Räsänen, M.E.; Romero Pittmann, L.; Vonhof, H.B..
This study of the type and scales of depositional processes and landscape development in western Amazonia during the Miocene is based on the description and interpretation of three boreholes from the Marañon basin (Peru). The Miocene Pebas Formation, and the overlying Marañon Formation and underlying Chambira Formation are lithologically characterised. An age calculation model indicates an Oligocene age for the Chambira Formation, and an Early – early late Miocene age for the Pebas Formation. The base of the Chambira Formation is placed at a sequence boundary and corresponds to the beginning of a regression. The succession was deposited in floodplains included in a RST and a LST under a seasonal climate with a pronounced dry season. The base of the Pebas...

The stratigraphic positions of the Wadi Dukhan and Al Uwayliah formations, northeast Libya – a review Naturalis
Tmalla, A.F.A..
The stratigraphic positions of the Wadi Dukhan and Al Uwayliah formations are reviewed. Diagnostic Maastrichtian larger foraminiferal species from the Wadi Dukhan Formation in well B7 – 41 (Cyrenaica) and in well U2 – 6 (northeastern Sirt Basin) are illustrated for the first time. These species are Omphalocyclus macroporus (Lamarck), Siderolites cf. calcitrapoides Lamarck and Orbitoides cf. media (d’Archiac). Following the rules of nomenclature, the type section of the Al Uwayliah Formation should be considered a composite stratotype. The section east of al Uwayliah village is the holostratotype (upper part of the formation) and the Jardas al Jarrari section is the parastratotype (lower part of the formation).
