There is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing frequent-fire, old-growth forests. However, there are general guidelines to follow: 1) set objectives for both structure (tree density, diameter distribution, tree species composition, spatial arrangement, amount of coarse woody debris) and function (nutrient cycling, desired tree species regeneration); 2) prioritize treatments according to ecological, economic, and social needs and risks; 3) identify the potential treatments (natural fire, prescribed fire, silvicultural cutting) that best meet the objectives and scale of the project; and 4) implement the treatment(s). We discuss each of these guidelines in this article. |

Many rural communities are vulnerable social-ecological systems (SES) that must do more than become resilient to future environmental and social shocks: they must transform to achieve sustainability. We aimed first to conceptually explore the proposition that SES characteristics (identity, feedbacks, structure, and functions) necessary for transformation may be distinct from those necessary for adaptive maintenance or resilience, and second, to propose metrics that may be used to assess these two types of system changes. We did this by interrogating literature and by investigating two rural towns in Australia using a combination of quantitative methods and focus groups to interrogate community social networks, capitals (human, natural, built, and social)... |

ABSTRACT In the production of glue-laminated timber (GLT), boards derived from planted forest wood with easy workability are glued on top of one another. The main objective of the present work was to evaluate the performance of paricá timber GLT beams (5 × 10 cm) on GLT. Three procedures were performed: (1) GLT beams (5 × 10 cm) were produced using natural lamellae without chemical preservatives; (2) the individual lamellae (2.5 × 5 cm) were chemically treated, and then glued together; and (3) the beams formed from the glued natural lamellae (5 × 10 cm) were treated chemically. The positions of lamellae on the beams were determined by their modulus of elasticity values (MOE), which were estimated by a non-destructive bending test with a three-point load.... |

There are numerous examples of convergent evolution in nature. Major ecological adaptations such as flight, loss of limbs in vertebrates, pesticide resistance, adaptation to a parasitic way of life, etc., have all evolved more than once, as seen by their analogous functions in separate taxa. But what about protein evolution? Does the environment have a strong enough influence on intracellular processes that enzymes and other functional proteins play, to evolve similar functional roles separately in different organisms? Manganese Superoxide Dismutase (MnSOD) is a manganesedependant metallo-enzyme which plays a crucial role in protecting cells from anti-oxidative stress by eliminating reactive (superoxide) oxygen species. It is a ubiquitous housekeeping... |

Three cruises (POP 1, SEAPSO 3 and SEAPSO 4) carried out during the "Tour du Monde" of the R.V. Jean Charcot allow us to obtain new structural and geochemical data for the Okinawa, North Fiji and Lau basins. Taken together, the structural and geochemical data illustrate a difference in evolution stages of these sites. The less evolved stage is represented by the Okinawa basin, where accretion is evidenced only by volcanic intrusion into a thinned continental crust. The most evolved stage is illustrated in the North Fiji basin, where the present-day accretion can be directly compm·ed to the East Pacific Ridge. The Lau basin displays an intem1ediate stage with a complex system of accretionary ridges. This difference in the evolution stage is translated in... |

Because one of the most common problems in fisheries is the definition of management units, we propose in this paper a bibliometric review focusing on the differentiation of Albacore populations, Thunnus alalunga, among and within oceanic regions (Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, and Mediterranean Sea). This paper is the first step of a current work on a global review of Albacore tuna using an international aquatic database (ASFA). For the present purpose, 367 publications, mainly composed of articles (64%), but also conference papers, proceedings and reports (24%), and books (12%), were analyzed. We will see that the concept of the stock and its delimitation is controversial because of the divergence of results. Such a conclusion makes us believe in... |

The human XAB1/ MBDin GTPase and its close homologues form one of the ten phylogenetically distinct families of the SIMIBI ( after signal recognition particle, MinD and BioD) class of phosphate- binding loop NTPases. The genomic context and the partners identified for the archaeal and eukaryotic homologues indicate that they are involved in genome maintenance - DNA repair or replication. The crystal structure of PAB0955 from Pyrococcus abyssi shows that, unlike other SIMIBI class G proteins, these highly conserved GTPases are homodimeric, regardless of the presence of nucleotides. The nucleotide- binding site of PAB0955 is rather rigid and its conformation is closest to that of the activated SRP G domain. One insertion to the G domain bears a strictly... |

The anti-lipopolysaccharide factor ALF-Pm3 is a 98-residue protein identified in hemocytes from the black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon. It was expressed in Pichia pastoris from the constitutive glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase promoter as a folded and N-15 uniformly labeled rALF-Pm3 protein. Its 3D structure was established by NMR and consists of three alpha-helices packed against a four-stranded beta-sheet. The C-34-C-55 disulfide bond was shown to be essential for the structure stability. By using surface plasmon resonance, we demonstrated that rALF-Pm3 binds to LPS, lipid A and to OM(R)-174, a soluble analogue of lipid A. Biophysical studies of rALF-Pm3/LPS and rALF-Pm3/OM(R)-174 complexes indicated rather high molecular sized aggregates, which... |

Although polysaccharides are ubiquitous and the most abundant renewable bio-components, their studies, covered by the glycochemistry and glycobiology fields, remain a challenge due to their high molecular diversity and complexity. Polysaccharides are industrially used in food products; human therapeutics fall into a more recent research field and pharmaceutical industry is looking for more and more molecules with enhanced activities. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) found in animal tissues play a critical role in cellular physiological and pathological processes as they bind many cellular components. Therefore, they present a great potential for the design and preparation of therapeutic drugs. On the other hand, microorganisms producing exopolysaccharides (EPS)... |

The therapeutic potential of natural bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides, especially glycosaminoglycans, is now well documented, and this activity combined with natural biodiversity will allow the development of a new generation of therapeutics. Advances in our understanding of the biosynthesis, structure and function of complex glycans from mammalian origin have shown the crucial role of this class of molecules to modulate disease processes and the importance of a deeper knowledge of structure-activity relationships. Marine environment offers a tremendous biodiversity and original polysaccharides have been discovered presenting a great chemical diversity that is largely species specific. The study of the biological properties of the... |
