Focus groups of value concepts of producers: National Report Switzerland Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Kilchsperger, Rahel; Bodini, Antonella.
The Organic Revision project was funded by the EU with the aim of supporting the further development of the EU Regulation 2092/91 on organic production. As part of the project focus groups were run in five European countries on value concepts of organic producers and other stakeholders, during 2004-2005. The project aims to provide an overview of values held among organic stakeholders, and of similarities and differences among the various national and private organic standards. In Switzerland, three group sessions were held with established organic farmers, two groups with newly converted organic farmers, one group involved experts from BIO SUISSE and one group was conducted with students from Agronomy, Environmental Sciences and Geography faculties of...

Observing the observers – uncovering the role of values in research assessments of organic food systems Organic Eprints
Thorsøe, Martin H.; Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
Assessing the overall effects of organic food systems is important, but also a challenge because organic food systems cannot be fully assessed from one single research perspective. The aim of the article is to uncover the role of values in assessments of organic food systems as a basis for discussing the implications of combining multiple perspectives in overall sustainability assessments of the food system. We explore how values are embedded in five research perspectives assessing organic food systems, 1) Food Science, 2) Discourse Analysis, 3) Phenomenology, 4) Neoclassical Welfare Economics and 5) Actor-Network Theory. The article shows that value has various meanings in different scientific perspectives, and that a strategy for including and balancing...

Bettina, Maccagnani; Roberto, Ferrari; Marco, Pozzati.
We aimed to demonstrate the applicability of the entomo-vectoring approach, using as a case study the control of strawberry grey mould Botrytis cinerea, with the biocontrol fungus Gliocladium catenulatum, delivered to strawberry flowers by honey bees. The trial targets cultivations in the open field included four treatments: untreated control, chemical fungicide, entomovectored biocontrol, and chemical + biocontrol combined. The proportion of mouldy berries, and/or the marketable yield of healthy berries was recorded from each treatment, along with other parameters of local interest, and showed the best results in the treatment biocontrol+chemical control, and in the entomovectored biocontrol with respect to untreated control.

Baars, Prof Dr Ton; Kaufmann, PD Dr Brigitte.

Perceptions of French private veterinary practitioners’ on their role inorganic dairy farms and opportunities to improve their advisoryservices for organic dairy farmers Organic Eprints
Duval, Julie; Bareille, Nathalie; Fourichon, Christine; Madouasse, Aurélien; Vaarst, Mette.
Veterinarians could be the expected sparring partners of organic dairy farmers in promoting animal health which is one of the main organic principles. However, in the past organic dairy farmers did not always consider veterinarians to be pertinent advisors for them. The objectives of this study are – from private veterinary practitioners’ point of views- i) to describe the roles of veterinarians today in organic dairy farmers’ animal health promotion strategies, ii) to identify factors related to organic farming which determine their role on organic dairy farms, and, iii) to identify opportunities for improvement of veterinarians’ advisory services for organic dairy herds. Fourteen veterinarians, providing herd health advisory services to dairy farmers,...

The Case Study Method in Organic Research Organic Eprints
Midmore, Peter; Padel, Susanne; Schermer, Markus.
This paper argues that the systematic complexity of agriculture requires a methodological pluralism, and that case studies, used hitherto as an ad hoc and exploratory approach, might be developed as a rigorous and appropriate investigational tool in their own right, with particular relevance for the organic sector. It provides a review of the main outlines of the approach and illustrates its application in the context of marketing initiatives and their impact on rural development processes. It concludes that important insights into how and why policies work can be obtained from a comparative case study framework, which cannot be wholly obtained from other approaches.

Supply Chain Inefficiencies in Greek Organic Food Industry: The Role of Information Flows Organic Eprints
Anastasiadis, Foivos; Poole, Nigel.
The basic concept of this research is a holistic examination of the SC from the consumer to the producer focusing on the information flow. According to the existing literature, there are several indications that a paradox applies to the Greek market. More specific, on the one hand there is an indication that consumers want to buy organics but on the other hand the SC, especially at the production level, does not seem to be aware of this demand. Hence, the general assumption is that SC stakeholders sustain the limited availability of the organic products (existing by definition from the initial stages of the organics introduction at the market) because limited availability creates high prices.
