The lagoon of New Caledonia is subject to various pressures, including terrigenous stream inputs. Their evolution – extent, intensity – can be studied through parameters such as ocean color, depending on turbidity or phytoplankton concentration. Satellite imagery is more and more used for this purpose. As the Sentinel-2 (S2) mission, with its satellites providing ten meters-resolution images, has been recently launched, we worked on the characterisation of lagoon color using these products. The objective of this study, carried out in the Gironde estuary inlet, was to determine the nature of the seaward dispersion of estuarine water and suspended sediments during a spring tide and high river flow. At first, the chronology of remote sensing flights organized by CNEXO, IFP and IGN is summarized. Secondly, examples of the most commonly observed phenomena along the coastline are presented. An interpretation of the various data collected is given for the area of Roscoff, taken as a model. This interpretation is extended to draw a serie of maps of sea and coastline pollution for several days between March 18 to May 26, 1978. The maps for the 18th and 21st of March are enclosed.

The airborne identification of oil films at the Caspian sea surface using CO2 lidar ArchiMer

Contrast in the reflectivity between pure and contaminated sea surfaces is the result of two effects, namely: (1) the different reflectivity of sea water and oil films on sea water, and (2) the damping effect by the oil film on the sea waves. The problem is to estimate the contribution of these two effects on the total contrast, so that the substance effect can be calculated. Magnitude is related to the oil film thickness. The spectral behaviour of the contrast and its relationship with the film thickness were calculated for an undisturbed sea surface. The estimate of the damping effect was made using the Cox and Munk's slope distributions for pure and contaminated surfaces. SPM influences light penetration which is closely related to primary production and carries pollutants and nutrients within the water masses. Chlorophyll profiles and the water column structure in the Gulf of California ArchiMer

Remote sensors provide information on the photosynthetic pigment concentration for the upper 22% of the euphotic zone. To model primary production in the water column from satellite-derived photosynthetic pigments, estimates of the vertical distribution of pigment concentration are required. A Gaussian distribution function is used to represent the pigment vertical profile with four parameters. We used 268 chlorophyll concentration profiles from 1973 through 1993, to estimate these parameters. This study presents the first results of an ongoing research program that aims to derive thematic maps of the intertidal lagoon of Arcachon (SW Atlantic coast of France) from space imagery. At this stage, we present the results of the tests performed on Formosat-2 imagery. Several classification strategies have been tried with the aim to discriminate the sedimentary facies and the main species of the lagoon. The classes calculated by an optimized unsupervised clustering method, based on simulated annealing global minimization technique, were used to train a supervised classification algorithm. In the framework of a comprehensive study of the coastal marine ecosystems of Guadeloupe Island (French West Indies), a remote sensing survey of marine communities was conducted in the Bay of the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin. Pictures of SPOT satellite were used. At first sight, XS data from SPOT did not seem to be well adapted to extract information from deepest underwater areas. In the present study, a method for analysis of XS data was developed, which increases tenuous spectral differences associated to very low intensity signals. The straits of Gibraltar and Kara Gates: a comparison of internal tides ArchiMer

Moored current measurements, numerical model calculations, and satellite images from the straits of Gibraltar and Kara Gates are compared. The vertical internal displacements (double amplitudes) with a semidiurnal frequency are extremely large in both straits. The displacements are related to internal tidal waves over the sills. The energy of the internal tides is transferred to an internal bore and associated wave packets of short-period internal waves. Their surface manifestation can be seen on the satellite images. Numerical modeling shows that the outflowing current from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean has a significant influence on internal tides. Evaluation of large-scale unsupervised classification of New Caledonia reef ecosystems using Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery ArchiMer

The capacity of the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus sensor to classify the shallow benthic ecosytems of New Caledonia (South Pacific) is tested using a novel unsupervised classification method. The classes are defined by using a set of multiple spectral decision rules based on the image spectral bands. A general model is applied to the entire Southwest lagoon (5500 km(2)) and tested on three representative sites: a section of the barrier reef, a cay reef flat rich in corals, and a cay reef flat rich in algae and seagrass beds. The high primary production (PP) of intertidal mudflats at temperate latitudes is mostly supported by microphytobenthos (MPB), which support both benthic and pelagic food webs. In the present thesis, we use a physical-biological coupled model to investigate the spatial and temporal variability of MPB dynamics on a large temperate intertidal mudflat of the French Atlantic coast. The model explicitly simulates the MPB biomass and the grazer (Peringia ulvae) biomass and density. The outputs provide key findings on MPB dynamics. Surface suspended matter off the Rhone river mouth from visible satellite imagery ArchiMer

The quantification of surface Total Suspended Matter (TSM) off the Rhone river mouth is investigated using SPOT-XS and Landsat-TM images collected in November 1994. The method of satellite data calibration from in situ measurements is discussed. It is based on TSM concentration measurements through filtration of surface water samples and on radiometric data collected with a 256-channel spectroradiometer in the range 400-1100 nm. Empirical relationships between reflectance and TSM concentration are established by linear regression analysis of the data. A comparison between sea-surface temperature-measurements from satellite noaa4 and from airborne radiometer aries ArchiMer

Measurements of sea surface temperatures (Sst) in the Gulf of Lions, obtained by the satellite "Noaa 4" sensor Vhrr and by the airborne radiometer "Aries", are presented and compared. The results reveal the reliability of the Vhrr data in the range 16-20. SOC, the degree of accuracy being within O. 5°C of the relative temperatures, despite a malfunctionning of the "Noaa 4" Vhrr.

This papers compares modern techniques of remote sensing (numerical) to more classical ones (photo-interpretation) for the assessment of the intertidal zone land use. The study is limited to homogeneous areas of off-bottom cultivation. The evaluation of the total area was made using both middle scale aerial photographs, with systematic sampling, and SPOT satellite data. These two methods do not allow to measure the off-bottom rearing design length. It is therefore necessary to get more precise information through high resolution data such as classical high scale photographs numerical scanners (MATRA) or C.C.D. cameras.

Coastal zones inventory by high resolution satellites ArchiMer

The development of tools for assessing impacts on coastal environments is a reality. These impact assessments need both baseline and monitoring studies. Satellite remote sensing data would be useful for coastal inventories (baselines) and monitoring if high spatial and temporal resolutions are yield compatible. An overview of the various sensors that could be used is presented. The constraints linked to the different resolutions are exposed. An example based on Spot simulated data and trends are developed.
