The reproductive system of male Phrynops geoffroanus adults is macroscopically described and the variation in testicular biometry is evaluated. A pair of oval testes is connected by the efferent ductules to the epididymis, which continue as deferent ducts, which emerge in the penis. The volume of the gonads showed the highest averages during spring and summer months. GSI varied significantly throughout the year, with the highest averages observed in the months that correspond to the end of spring and the beginning of summer, when the reproduction of the species takes place, and the lowest averages were seen in winter, suggesting a cyclical testicular activity. |

The goal of present study was to evaluate the effects of diabetes on quantitative parameters of Leydig cells. Twelve adults Wistar rats were divided in: 1) Diabetic Group (DG), which was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (60 mg kg-1 of body weight); and 2) Control Group (CG), which received citrate buffer intraperitoneal. After eight weeks of diabetic induction, the animals were weighted, anesthetized and testicles were removed and routinely processed to paraffin embedded. Body weight (40%) and testicular weight (18%) of diabetic rats were significantly lower than control group. Diabetic rats showed an increase in interstitial compartment but the tubular compartment did not differ. The individual volume of Leydig cells and... |

Abstract The present study was aimed to investigate the in vivo effects of Rosa canina extract on doxorubicin-induced testicular toxicity in mice for the first time. Male NMRI mice were randomly divided into six treatment groups (10=per group) as follows: (I) vehicles, (II) doxorubicin alone (3 mg/kg, i.p. on days 7, 14 and 21), (III and IV): Rosa canina extract alone (100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg per day, i.p. for 28 days), (V and VI) Rosa canina extract plus doxorubicin (each dose given 1 h post Rosa canina). Doxorubicin-treated mice displayed smaller body and testicular weights, decreased serum levels of testosterone, loss in the number of germ cells and Sertoli cells, and reduced sperm count, viability, morphology and motility. Doxorubicin treatment... |

The aim of present study was to compare the changes in thyroid gland with the reproductive cycle of S. heathi. Thyroid showed marked seasonal variation in weight, quantity of colloid and follicular epithelial height, suggesting the thyroid gland to be inactive during quiescence and winter dormancy and active during the time of recrudescence and breeding similarly to the testicular cycle. Plasma thyroxin (T4) concentration showed a significant seasonal change with high concentration during breeding and post-breeding and low concentration during quiescence. However, the T4 concentration increased from breeding to post-breeding phase, when the testes weight was declining. It is suggested that in S. heathi the positive correlation between thyroid and... |

The effect of ionizing irradiation on testes and the protective effects of melatonin were investigated by immunohistochemical and electron microscopic methods. Eighty-two adult male Wistar rats were divided into 10 groups. The rats in the irradiated groups were exposed to a sublethal irradiation dose of 8 Gy, either to the total body or abdominopelvic region using a 60Co source at a focus of 80 cm away from the skin in the morning or evening together with vehicle (20% ethanol) or melatonin administered 24 h before (10 mg/kg), immediately before (20 mg/kg) and 24 h after irradiation (10 mg/kg), all ip. Caspace-3 immunoreactivity was increased in the irradiated group compared to control (P < 0.05). Melatonin-treated groups showed less apoptosis as... |

The study revealed that the testes of one-day-old Gaddi goats have descended in the scrotum along with adnexa. They were elongated compressed latero-medially and became ovoid during their postnatal growth and morphogenesis. The two testes were not different significantly in their weight and measurement. The average weight which was about 2.9 gm at birth grew to 107 gm (40X) in pubertal animals and nearly maintained it during the post-puberty (113 g). The mean length (1.46 cm), width (0.85 cm) and thickness (0.62 cm) also grew by 47, 60, and 83 times, respectively. In post-pubertal animals it measured 7.06 x 5.20 x 5.10 cm. The study indicated a very fast growth of the testes from birth to puberty, which did not alter significantly after that. A relatively... |

As ambient temperature and humidity are high all year round within clearly defined dry and rainy seasons in our humid tropical environment, we evaluated the effects of season on the histometric characteristics of the reproductive organs of pubertal West African dwarf bucks using 8 healthy animals. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) between the rainy and dry seasons in the basement membrane of the testes, seminiferous tubular diameter, and round spermatid nuclear diameter. There were also similarities (p>0.05) between the seasons in epididymal luminal diameters, epididymal epithelial heights as well as in Leydig/sertoli cell ratio and sertoli cell Índex. Quadratic regression analyses showed that all the histometric characteristics of the... |

The gonadal development assessment is a fundamental work in researching the reproduction of Peprilus medius, on the way to understand its population dynamics and to achieve a sustainable management of its fisheries. The diagnosis based on morphochromatic features is the quicker, more practical and cheaper method, and properly validated, it may be an accurate procedure. This is particularly useful in researches when it is required to provide prompt and accurate information to support decision-making for fisheries management, and during long-term fisheries monitoring to detect changes in reproductive patterns due to environmental anomalies. These are issues of concern in P. medius and other fishery resources. In this context, a scale that describes the... |

Ubiquitous consumption of Momordica charantia is hinged on credence of its potency in alleviating ailments. Almost no data exist on its quantitative relationship to the testes. The aim was to study the histomorphometric effect of Momordica charantia seed extract (MC), ascorbic acid (C), alpha-tocopherol (E) and testosterone (T) on the testes of rats. Ninety five mature 6-8 week-old male Sprague-Dawley (S-D) rats allotted randomly into six groups. Group I: fed MC for 16 weeks. Group II: administered MC for 8 weeks, later distilled water for another 8 weeks. Group III: administered C, E, T and a combination of all three test solutions (CET) for 8 weeks and later fed MC for another 8 weeks. Group IV: received MC initially for 8 weeks and later administered C,... |

Studies on testes and epididymis tissue of rats treated orally for fourteen days with therapeutic doses of cloxacillin (6mg/100g/day), ampicillin (4mg/100/day) and tetracycline (12mg/100g/day) separately showed a significant reduction in testicular and epididimis architecture. Microscopic studies of these male reproductive organs further revealed a significant alteration in the epididymis as revealed by a significant reduction (p<0.05) in epididymal ductular diameter (EDD), and epididymal epithelial height (EEH) in treated group of animals. A significant increase (p<0.05) was however recorded in epididymal luminal diameter (ELD) in all the animals after the two and three week's recovery period allowed. This gives another insight into the toxicity... |

Variations in the adult male reproductive system among different groups of Hymenoptera offer characteristics that help studies on behavior and phylogenetics. The objective of this study was to describe the adult male reproductive system of three Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) species. For that, tissues were disseced, fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1 M sodium cacodylate buffer, pH 7.2 and postfixed in 1% osmium tetroxide. The material was dehydratated and embedded for light and electron transmission microscopes. The species have similar reproductive systems, which are formed by a pair of testes, each one with three fusiforme follicles, from which emerges an efferent duct that later joins forming a deferent duct. The deferent duct opens into an ejaculatory... |
