HISTOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM OF MALE AND FEMALE HATCHLINGS OF THE MAGDALENA RIVER TURTLE (Podocnemis lewyana) Acta biol.Colomb.
SÁNCHEZ-OSPINA,ANDRÉS C; RODRIGUEZ,BERARDO; CEBALLOS,CLAUDIA P..
In this study we described the macroscopic and microscopic histology of the reproductive system of male and female Podocnemis lewyana neonates (3.5 months old). We found macroscopic differences in the morphology of the gonads between the sexes, with ovaries being twice as long as testes, and testes being twice as wide as ovaries. Microscopically, we identified several immature elements, such as the lack of a muscle layer in the oviduct of females, and simple epithelia instead of pseudostratified epithelia in the oviduct and epididymis described in reptile adults. We also found a black pigment observed macroscopically in the mesovarium, and macroscopically and histologically in the epididymis. This pigment is consistent with the center of melano-macrophages...

Expression of caveolin-1 in rat Leydig cells Biocell
Casanova,Marta B..
Caveolin-1, the first member of caveolin family reported, is recognized as the structural component of caveola, a plasma membrane invagination or vesicles that are a subcompartment distinct from clathrin-coated pits. This protein is also known to be involved in cholesterol trafficking. The aim of this study was to determine the expression of caveolin-1 in adult rat Leydig cells. Testis sections incubated with an antibody to caveolin-1 showed, by immunohistochemistry, a moderate number of Leydig cells with different degrees of immunoreaction and a strong reaction in endothelial cells and in the lamina propia of seminiferous tubules. Caveolin-1 was detected in the cell cytoplasm with a granular pattern and on the cell surface of Leydig cells cultured 24 h on...

Abstract Background The muskrat is a seasonal breeder. Males secrete musk to attract females during the breeding season. The testosterone binding to the androgen receptor (AR) in musk glands of muskrat may play an important role conducting the musk secretion process. Methods The musk gland, testis and blood samples of musk rats are collected in both breeding and non-breeding seasons. Some part of the samples are kept in liquid nitrogen for transcriptome analysis and Western blotting test. Some part of the samples are kept in 70% alcohol for histology experiment, blood samples are kept at −20 °C for the serum testosterone measurement experiment. Results This study demonstrates that the quantity of secreted musk, the volume of the musk...

Human testis-expressed sequence 101 is limitedly distributed in germinal epithelium of testis and disappears in seminoma Biol. Res.
Shen,Cong-Cong; Kang,Yu-Huan; Yu,Lin; Cui,Dan-Dan; He,Yi; Yang,Jin-Liang; Gou,Lan-Tu.
BACKGROUND: Testis-expressed sequence 101 (TEX101) was found to be highly expressed in testis and involved in acrosome reaction in previous studies. Recently, the metastasis suppressor function of TEX101 in cancer was disclosed, but the comprehensive investigation of its expression has rarely been reported. In this study, the expression features of TEX101 in normal human organs and seminoma were systematically analyzed. RESULTS: Immunohistochemistry demonstrated intense staining of TEX101 in human testis tissues; however, its expression in 27 other types of normal human organs, including the ovary, was negligible. Higher expression of TEX101 was observed in the spermatocytes and spermatids of the testis, but relatively lower staining was detected in...

Propylthiouracil-induced hypothyroidism delays apoptosis during the first wave of spermatogenesis Biol. Res.
Silva,Doris; Lizama,Carlos; Tapia,Verónica; Moreno,Ricardo D.
Mammalian germ cell apoptosis plays a key role in controlling the correct number of germ cells supported by Sertoli cells during the first wave of spermatogenesis in mammalian puberty. However, little is known about hormonal factors that could influence the rate of germ cell apoptosis during puberty or adulthood. In this work we evaluate germ cell apoptosis under hypothyroidism induced by goitrogen propylthiouracil (PTU) during the first wave of spermatogenesis. Neonatally administered PTU promoted a delay in the differentiation of Sertoli cells as evaluated by the expression of clusterin using immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. Clusterin had different expression levels in control and PTU-treated animals, but under both conditions the highest levels were...

Contribution of environmental pollutants to male infertily: A working model of germ cell apoptosis induced by plasticizers Biol. Res.
Lagos-Cabré,Raúl; Moreno,Ricardo D.
Bisphenol A [2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane] (BPA), 4-nonylphenol (NP) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), and its metabolite mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) are chemicals found in plastics, which act as endocrine disruptors (EDs) in animals, including human. EDs act like hormones in the endocrine system, and disrupt the physiologic function of endogenous hormones. Most people are exposed to different endocrine disruptors and concern has been raised about their true effect on reproductive organs. In the testis, they seem to preferentially attack developing testis during puberty rather than adult organs. However, the lack of information about the molecular mechanism, and the apparently controversial effect observed in different models has hampered the...

Tissue mRNA expression in rat of newly described matrix metalloproteinases Biol. Res.
BERNAL,FABIÁN; HARTUNG,HANS-PETER; KIESEIER,BERND C.
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) comprise a large group of endoproteinases that degrade all protein components of the extracellular matrix. Functionally, MMPs contribute to several different physiological as well as pathological conditions. The number of newly described MMPs has increased in recent years, although current knowledge about their expression pattern in various tissues remains incomplete. Here we analyzed the relative mRNA expression of the most recently described MMPs _ MT5-MMP (MMP-24), MT6-MMP (MMP-25), MMP-27 and epilysin (MMP-28) _ in a broad selection of rat tissues using real time-PCR. MMP-24 mRNA was found to be widely expressed with predominance in the central nervous system. MMP-25 mRNA, in contrast, exhibited peak expression levels...

Differential expression and localization of ADAM10 and ADAM17 during rat spermatogenesis suggest a role in germ cell differentiation Biol. Res.
Urriola-Muñoz,Paulina; Lizama,Carlos; Lagos-Cabré,Raúl; Reyes,Juan G; Moreno,Ricardo D.
BACKGROUND: Extracellular metolloproteases have been implied in different process such as cell death, differentiation and migration. Membrane-bound metalloproteases of the ADAM family shed the extracellular domain of many cytokines and receptor controlling auto and para/juxtacrine cell signaling in different tissues. ADAM17 and ADAM10 are two members of this family surface metalloproteases involved in germ cell apoptosis during the first wave of spermatogenesis in the rat, but they have other signaling functions in somatic tissues. RESULTS: In an attempt to further study these two enzymes, we describe the presence and localization in adult male rats. Results showed that both enzymes are detected in germ and Sertoli cells during all the stages of...

Antioxidant Status, Lipid Peroxidation and Testis-histoarchitecture Induced by Lead Nitrate and Mercury Chloride in Male Rats BABT
Bas,Hatice; Kalender,Suna.
ABSTRACT This study was done to evaluate the effects of lead nitrate and mercury chloride in testis tissues of Wistar rats. Lead nitrate and mercury chloride are widely used heavy metals in industry. Oral lead and mercury administrations to adult male rats at doses 45 mg/kg bw and 0.02 mg/kg bw, respectively for 4 weeks caused a significant increasing in MDA levels and antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, GPx and GST). The MDA levels and acivities of antioxidant enzymes was lower in rats that were administrated by lead nitrate than mercury chloride treated group. Light microscopic analyses revealed that lead nitrate and mercury chloride induced numerous histopathological changes in testis tissues of rats. Histopathological observations of the testis...

Solexa Profiling Identifies Differentially Expressed MiRNAs Between Sexually Immature and Mature Equine Testis BABT
He,Liangjun; Wang,Shiwei; Deng,Haifeng; Dong,Hong; Chen,Jingbo.
ABSTRACT MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of short non-coding RNAs identified as potent regulators of gene expression. Previous studies have suggested that miRNAs are involved in mammalian spermatogenesis. Stallion fertility is an important trait for the horse breeding industry, but stallion fertility traits are largely ignored in the industry. In this study, we generated expression profiles of miRNAs in foal (immature) and stallion (mature) testes using Solexa sequencing. We identified 438 known and homologous equine miRNAs and 199 novel miRNAs which were distributed among all the chromosomes. The two developmental stages showed significant differences in miRNA expression patterns. Our result expands the horse miRNA database and provided additional...

Reproductive biology of Oligosarcus argenteus (Gunther, 1864) adult males and description of the gonadal maturation stages BABT
Matt,Sérgio Luis Pinto da; Gomes,Marcos de Lucca Moreira; Andrade,Dálcio Ricardo de.
Oligosarcus argenteus belongs to the Acestrorhynchinae subfamily, being restricted to South America, and found in several Brazilian hydrographic basins, in lotic and lentic environments, where they are able to reproduce. With the purpose of studying the reproductive biology of the males from this species, many morphological parameters were analyzed during a 24 month period, as well as characterizing the different testicular maturation stages. A maturity scale, with three stages (I - Initial Maturing, II - Intermediate Maturing, III - Final Maturing) was proposed for the adult males of Oligosarcus argenteus. The reproductive period was established by the bimonthly frequency of spermatogenesis and by the gonadal maturation stages.

Effects of catuaba cristal® on the testis of wistar rats BABT
Freitas,Karine Moura de; Costa,Kyvia Lugate; Campos,Pamela Kelly Araújo; Melo,Fabiana Cristina Silveira Alves de; Paula,Tarcízio Antônio Rego de; Matta,Sérgio Luis Pinto da.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible beneficial effects of Catuaba Cristal® (CC), an alcoholic drink made from wine and Erythroxylum catuaba Ar. Cam on testis. Wistar rats either received CC solution (n=8) or water (n=9). Results showed significant body weight reduction within the CC group, although, no weight changes were observed for liver, kidney, testis, epididymis, seminal vesicle and prostate. The volumetric proportion and volume of interstitial tissue and lymphatic space were reduced in the treated group. In the CC group, although the nuclear volume of Leydig cells (LC) decreased, the number of LC per testis increased. These results suggested that CC had no beneficial effect on spermatogenesis of Wistar rats.

Testis and vas deferens morphology of the red-clawed mangrove tree crab (Goniopsis cruentata) (Latreille, 1803) BABT
Garcia,Tatiane Martins; Silva,José Roberto Feitosa.
The present study describes the structure of the testes and vas deferens of the red-clawed mangrove tree crab, Goniopsis cruentata. Testes and vas deferens were fixed with cold Bouin's solution and submitted to histological routine examinations. Light microscopy showed the testis to be divided into three regions: anterior, containing the germinal zone; intermediary, including the collecting duct; and posterior. The vas deferens, which was continuous with the testes, could be divided into two regions: one corresponding to the expansions and another lined by cubical epithelium, collagenous fibers and a circular layer of muscle cells and containing the androgenic gland. Spermatophores were observed in both vas deferens regions suggesting that they...

Morphological aspects of the spermatic cord of mice (Mus musculus) Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Gonçalves,Andréia Maria Martarello; Borelli,Vicente.
A histological study of the morphological aspects of 33 spermatic cord pairs of adult mice (Mus musculus) showed that its their components were ensheated by a thin mesothelium capsule in 3 pairs. Under this capsule, completely surrounding the cord, there was a dense layer of adipose tissue. Its components were surrounded by loose connective tissue with a predominance of collagen fibers among reticular and elastic fibers. The testicular artery varied in diameter and was involved by the testicular veins, consisting of an inner layer formed by endothelium and an inner limiting elastic membrane, a middle layer formed by a thick smooth muscle layer supported by a network of reticular fibers, and an outer layer consisting of dense connective tissue close to the...

Testicular schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni: a case report from Brazil BJID
Lopes,Roberto Iglesias; Leite,Kátia Ramos; Prando,Décio; Lopes,Roberto Nicomedes.
Testicular schistosomiasis by Schistosoma mansoni is exceedingly rare, with only 11 cases reported in PubMed. We report a new case from Brazil. A 31-year-old man from the northeast region of the country presented with a 2 cm nodule in the right testis. Ultrasonography showed a well-delimited hypoechoic tumor, suggestive of a granulomatous lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an irregular tunica albuginea signal. A biopsy showed interstitial tissue with schistosome ova and granuloma formation. The nodule was excised, and the patient was treated with oxamniquine. He has remained symptom free for 10 years. A testicular nodule should raise suspicion of numerous pathologies, including schistosomiasis. Treatment should include therapy with oxamniquine or...
