Selection and matching of appropriate tillage implements for a given farming operation are dependent on the data available on draft parameters for the particular tillage implement. Spring tine cultivator is one of the primary tillage implements commonly used by farmers in the study location. Performance information of spring tine cultivator is vital to enable the cost of tillage operation to be reduced. Field experiments were performed using spring tine cultivator and tractor at three tillage depths (10, 20 and 30 cm) and five tractor speeds (3.6, 5.4, 7.2, 9.0 and 10.8 km/hr) to determine the implement travel speed. The effects of tillage depth and implement travel speed on draft force, unit draft, vertical specific draft, horizontal specific draft and... |

Draft and power requirement determinations were made for some tillage implements operating on clay loam soil. The implements included a 3 – bottom disc plough, a spring tine cultivator and an offset disc harrow. The effects of speed and depth upon the draft and power requirements were investigated. Soil analysis test, tractor and implement specifications and results of tillage experiments are reported. A general regression equation to predict draft and power requirements of these implements on a clay loam soil was developed based on speed and depth parameter. A significant increase in draft and power requirements were observed for all the implements with an increase in depth. The relationships between draft and power requirement with respect to speed and... |

In this study, a comparative evaluation of tractive force models for disc harrowing, at different tillage speeds was carried out in order to determine optimal tillage speeds. The predictive models were developed using dimensional analysis. The tillage operation in a loamy sand soil, at tillage speeds of 1.94 m s-1, 2.22 m s-1 and 2.5 m s-1 respectively was conducted, using trace tractor techniques. Parameters such as drawbar pull, rolling resistance, wheel slip, moisture content, cone index, wheel numeric, contact pressure, speed, width of harrow, depth of harrow, and tractive force were measured. The developed mathematical models describing the tractors tyre-soil interactions parameters were evaluated using sensitivity analysis of the measured... |

Clean fallowing has been criticized in the recent past due to the fact that it causes accelerated soil erosion, emission of CO2 to the atmosphere and reduction in farm income. In an effort to reduce fallowing in Pothwar, Pakistan, field experiments were carried out from 2005 through 2008 at three locations (Rawalpindi, Chakwal and Fateh Jang). The experimental design was split-plot and treatments were applied as follows: conventional cultivator, moldboard plow and minimum tillage in main plots; fallow, legume (mungbean, Vigna radiata) and mulch of wheat straw were used in sub plots. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) was planted in all the subplots during winter. All the treatment plots had equivalent volumetric water content at wheat planting. Consequently, the... |

The aim of this study was to determine whether the form of placing the fertilizer by the planter during the sowing under mulch in the no till system affects the yield of corn. The treatments consisted of placing the fertilizer during the seeding 0.05 m below and beside the seed, in front of the cutting blade and without fertilizer, in 03 farms during 03 cropping years. The experimental design at each farm was the randomized block, with 08 repetitions, whose plots had 30 m² each. The initial population and yield components were evaluated. Under the experimental conditions it is concluded that base fertilization can affect the yield. Fertilizer placement can affect the initial stand, but not the yield. |

ABSTRACT Draft and energy requirements are the most important factors in the activities of farm machinery management owing to their role in matching the tractor with implements for different tillage operations. This study's aim was to model the draft and energy requirements of a moldboard plow based on two novel variables. The first was the soil texture index (STI), which was formed from the clay, sand, and silt contents with a range of 0.03–0.84. The second variable was the field working index (FWI), formed by combining the plow width, plowing speed, soil bulk density, soil moisture content, plowing depth, and tractor power into one dimensionless variable, which had a range of 7.17–82.45. The coefficient of determination (R2) values obtained using a... |
