Development of an information system for the traceability of citrus-plant nursery chain related to the Italian National Service for Voluntary Certification CIGR Journal
Porto, Simona M. C.; Arcidiacono, Claudia; Anguzza, Umberto; Cascone, Giovanni.
Abstract: At present, the production of certified plants in Italy, which is obtained by using propagating materials verified in terms of varietal trueness-to-type and phytosanitary condition, is guaranteed by the National Service for Voluntary Certification.  The monitoring of productions and activities that are carried out in the centres established by the National Service for Voluntary Certification is crucial for the identification of both possible sources of disease risk and the destination of the propagating materials.  In previous studies a methodology was proposed and applied to carry out the requirements analysis and specification for the development of an integrated computer-based information system for certified citrus-plant traceability.  This...

Felmer D,Ricardo; Sagredo D,Boris; Chávez R,Renato; Iraira H,Sergio; Folch M,Carolina; Parra G,Lorena; Catrileo S,Adrián; Ortiz L,Manuel.
Animal products traceability has acquired considerable importance as a security measure in EEC member countries since the food crisis of the mid-nineties. This has led to reinforcing the capacity to manage cattle product quality, with traceability emerging as the main tool to prevent risks to product security and quality as demanded by consumers in developed countries. The practical application of a traceability system for beef, based on molecular markers requires the election of a panel of microsatellites, as well as the optimization of methods of sampling and DNA analysis. In this work, a traceability system for beef based on a panel of 10 microsatellites markers was implemented. Different biological samples were evaluated, such as hair, blood, tissue...

Adoption of beef cattle traceability at farm level in São Paulo State, Brazil Ciência Rural
Vinholis,Marcela de Mello Brandão; Carrer,Marcelo José; Souza Filho,Hildo Meirelles de.
ABSTRACT: This paper aimed to identify the determinants of beef traceability adoption at farm level in São Paulo State, Brazil. A sample survey of 32 farmers who adopted the European Union certified traceability and 52 other farmers who did not adopt traceability provided data to test hypotheses on determinant factors. Three binomial logit models were used in the analysis. Results suggested that capital-intensive livestock production system, high scale production, access to specialized information and high level of human and social capital play significant role in the adoption decision.

A Multi-Elements Isotope Approach to Assess the Geographic Provenance of Manila Clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) via Recombining Appropriate Elements ArchiMer
Won, Eun-ji; Kim, Seung Hee; Go, Young-shin; Kumar, K. Suresh; Kim, Min-seob; Yoon, Suk-hee; Bayon, Germain; Kim, Jung-hyun; Shin, Kyung-hoon.
The increasing global consumption of seafood has led to increased trade among nations, accompanied by mislabeling and fraudulent practices that have rendered authentication crucial. The multi-isotope ratio analysis is considered as applicable tool for evaluating geographical authentications but requires information and experience to select target elements such as isotopes, through a distinction method based on differences in habitat and physiology due to origin. The present study examined recombination conditions of multi-elements that facilitated geographically distinct classifications of the clams to sort out appropriate elements. Briefly, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) analysis was performed according to several combinations of five stable isotopes...

Evaluation, signalling and willingness to pay for traceability. A cross-national comparison ArchiMer
Calvo Dopico, D.; Mendes, R.; Silva, H.a.; Verrez-bagnis, Veronique; Pérez-martín, R.; Sotelo, C.g..
This study aims to investigate the benefits associated with traceability and its relationship to quality. Market research has been conducted in Spain, Portugal, France, UK and Germany. The results show that the expected benefits for consumers related to traceability focus on food safety and quality. Relevant information about traceability should focus on the intrinsic quality attributes highly valued by consumers and food safety. Among them, it highlights the origin, the value of which has been highly appreciated by most consumers in different countries. As regards signalling, consumers rate labelling very favourably, which would have to offer all relevant information on the intrinsic quality attributes. The implementation of technology (e.g. QR) could...

Phenolic Profiling for Traceability of Vanilla x tahitensis ArchiMer
Busconi, Matteo; Lucini, Luigi; Soffritti, Giovanna; Bernardi, Jamila; Bernardo, Letizia; Brunschwig, Christel; Lepers-andrzejewski, Sandra; Raharivelomanana, Phila; Fernandez, Jose A..
Vanilla is a flavoring recovered from the cured beans of the orchid genus Vanilla. Vanilla xtahitensis is traditionally cultivated on the islands of French Polynesia, where vanilla vines were first introduced during the nineteenth century and, since the 1960s, have been introduced to other Pacific countries such as Papua New Guinea (PNG), cultivated and sold as "Tahitian vanilla," although both sensory properties and aspect are different. From an economic point of view, it is important to ensure V. xtahitensis traceability and to guarantee that the marketed product is part of the future protected designation of the origin "Tahitian vanilla" (PDO), currently in progress in French Polynesia. The application of metabolomics, allowing the detection and...

Traceability of aquatic animals ArchiMer
Hastein, T; Hill, Bj; Berthe, Franck; Lightner, Dv.
Effective methods of traceability are urgently required for use in research as weil as in different types of aquaculture operations and to control trade in aquatic animais and praducts. In regard to the marking of fish, many different tagging methods have been described and the method to be used depends on the purpose and need for tagging. In contrast, for molluscs and crustaceans, only a few methods of marking such animais have been described, due to the practical difficulties. The authors first describe the different methods for tracing fish and fishery products, by means of external tags, such as Floy tags, Carlin tags and passive integrated transponder tags; chemical marking using inorganic substances su ch as silver nitrate or potassium nitrate,...

Validation of a customized subset of SNPs for sheep breed assignment in Brazil PAB
Paim,Tiago do Prado; McManus,Concepta; Vieira,Fábio Danilo; Oliveira,Stanley Robson de Medeiros; Facó,Olivardo; Azevedo,Hymerson Costa; Araújo,Adriana Mello de; Moraes,José Carlos Ferrugem; Yamagishi,Michel Eduardo Beleza; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Caetano,Alexandre Rodrigues; Paiva,Samuel Rezende.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the usefulness of a subset of 18 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for breed identification of Brazilian Crioula, Morada Nova (MN), and Santa Inês (SI) sheep. Data of 588 animals were analyzed with the Structure software. Assignments higher than 90% confidence were observed in 82% of the studied samples. Most of the low-value assignments were observed in MN and SI breeds. Therefore, although there is a high reliability in this subset of 18 SNPs, it is not enough for an unequivocal assignment of the studied breeds, mainly of hair breeds. A more precise panel still needs to be developed for the widespread use in breed assignment.

Meat Slaughter and Processing Plants’ Traceability Levels: Evidence From Iowa AgEcon
Bulut, Harun; Lawrence, John D..
Based on an econometric analysis of the data obtained from a survey of meat plants ( ) in Iowa in summer 2007, this paper identifies the factors impacting the meat plants’ voluntary adoption of forward and backward traceability activities. The results suggest that the ownership type (corporate versus independent) and operations type (slaughtering versus not) matter rather than the size and meat type produced (beef, pork, or poultry) as suggested in the previous surveys. Furthermore, food safety activities appear to be complementary to traceability activities. The findings may assist ongoing regulatory efforts in implementing traceability in U.S. in the near future.

Traceability and Demand Sensitiveness: Evidences from Italian Fresh Potatoes Consumption AgEcon
Caracciolo, Francesco; Cembalo, Luigi.
When a traceability system takes place, either when mandatory or voluntary, many questions arise that need to be addressed and answered. One of the firsts concerns whether it introduces new costs with no gain in efficiency or, on the contrary, the system efficiency increases lowering costs and, as a consequence, market price of the good in hand. Among others, another issue that only rarely is addressed regards the effect of a price change on the final market. The objective of this paper was to simulate the effect on fresh Italian vegetables market of prices change due to a newer traceability procedure, focusing on early potato. Reasons why early potato was the main object of our study will be explained in detail later in the paper. Moreover, this study...

THE CHANGING FACE OF THE U.S. GRAIN SYSTEM: DIFFERENTIATION AND IDENTITY PRESERVATION TRENDS AgEcon
Elbehri, Aziz.
This report examines current trends in the U.S. grain industry. Many identity preservation(IP) grain systems have emerged recently, driven by a confluence of supply and demand factors. IP grain requirements for specific production protocols, marketing channels, and quality assurance depend on whether the crops are trait-specific, non-GM (genetically modified), organic, or pharmaceutical. Cost structures vary according to the relative importance of segregation and risk management. High information management, greater market coordination, and frequent reliance on contracts characterize IP grains. IP grain markets are also inherently riskier, with volatile supply, inelastic demand, and fluctuating price premiums. Increasing grain differentiation is altering...

EXIGÊNCIAS DOS CONSUMIDORES EUROPEUS EM RELAÇÃO À MAÇÃ GAÚCHA, NA VISÃO DOS EXPORTADORES AgEcon
Dorr, Andrea Cristina; Marques, Pedro Valentim.
Considering the European consumers’ concern regarding food quality and safety, three study cases were developed with companies aiming to know what the requirements about apple production are. The results showed that two companies are only producers, meaning they do not hold any contractual relation between a company and themselves, which characterizes the management structure as “own production”. As for the third company, producers sell their fruit to the company after establishing a partnership (hybrid governance structure). The challenges for these companies are the increasing level of requirements concerning the apple quality, the relation between prices and costs and the food safety and traceability in the chain.

Traceability and Assurance Protocols in the Global Food System AgEcon
Jones, Eluned; Poghosyan, Arsen; Gonzalez-Diaz, Francisco; Bolotova, Yuliya.
In the 21st century, the food supply chain has become a complex, interconnected system with strategies that are aimed at creating improved products to satisfy consumers' demand for safer foods. To stay competitive and ensure consumer confidence, agribusiness firms develop and implement strategies that take into account not only traditional economic factors driving the food demand, but also issues such as food safety and quality. Traceability and assurance protocols help agribusiness companies improve and refine their production processes, thus providing better control over, and transparency of, food quality and safety throughout the food supply chain. This paper reports on the empirical results of focus interviews conducted during the 2004 IAMA conference...

Linking Animal-Health-Related Information to an Integrated-Animal-Health System AgEcon
Fick, Johanna; Doluschitz, Reiner.
EU-regulation (EG) 178/2002 and the EU hygiene package have fixed general principles and requirements for the food law. Some of these principles and requirements are related to the issues of traceability and quality assurance along the agro-food-chains and affect all participants of the supply value chain. This paper focuses on the implementation of these requirements to the livestock farmer and veterinarian segment of the supply value chain. Livestock farmers and veterinarians are responsible for animal health, which is one of the key features of quality assurance. Furthermore, both groups already document information related to animal health. Often, the documentation is comprehensive and at times redundant, and is accomplished manually. Currently, an...
