Ultrasonic depolymerization of an exopolysaccharide produced by a bacterium isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent polychaete annelid ArchiMer
Petit, Anne-celine; Noiret, Nicolas; Guezennec, Jean; Gondrexon, N; Colliec-jouault, Sylvia.
Low frequency ultrasound was used to depolymerize a high-molecular-weight exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by a deep-sea hydrothermal bacterium Alteromonas macleodii subsp. fijiensis biovar deepsane. The influence of several parameters was examined including the duration of ultrasonic irradiation, EPS concentration. reaction temperature and volume of the sonicated solution. With the aim of optimizing the depolyrnerization, the native EPS was simultaneously treated with hydrogen peroxide and ultrasound. This study identified the sonication conditions that produce low-molecular-weight derivatives from the native EPS (>10(6) Da) with good reproducibility. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Soft liquefaction of the red seaweed Grateloupia turuturu Yamada by ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis process ArchiMer
Le Guillard, Cecile; Berge, Jean-pascal; Donnay-moreno, Claire; Bruzac, Sandrine; Ragon, Jean-yves; Baron, Regis; Fleurence, Joel; Dumay, Justine.
Ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis is a recent process, increasingly employed for plant biomass liquefaction and the recovery of soluble biomolecules. However, to our knowledge, it has never been used on seaweeds, particularly wet ones. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of three processes on the liquefaction of the red seaweed Grateloupia turuturu Yamada: enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and their combination, ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis (UAEH). These comparisons will allow the identification as to which process achieves the highest extraction yield of water-soluble compounds. For this purpose, experiments were conducted at 40 °C for 6 h using an enzymatic cocktail of four...

Study of Undescended Testes by High Frequency Ultrasound International Journal of Morphology
Onkar,Deepali; Onkar,Prashant; Mitra,Kajal.
Undescended testes or cryptorchidism in the most common congenital anomaly of male reproductive system. The descent is multifactorial with gubernaculums playing major role. The failure of descent can be at trans-abdominal or inguino-scrotal phase. Locating undescended testes is important in view of low fertility and high rate of occurrence of neoplasm in them. Ultrasound is the standard imaging technique of choice in children with a non-palpable testis as it is non-invasive and does not use ionizing radiation. Position of testis is also important in deciding whether patient will need abdominal or inguinal exploration. The aim was to study the position of undescended testes by high frequency ultrasound and its embryonic explanation. Total 41 boys with...

Raikos,Athanasios; Paraskevas,George K; Triaridis,Stefanos; Kordali,Panagiota; Psillas,George; Brand-Saberi,Beate.
Anatomical variations of the sternocleidomastoid muscle are rare and concern its origin, insertion, and the number of heads. We report on a rare bilateral variant of the sternocleidomastoid muscle with aberrant and supernumerary muscular heads, observed in a cadaveric subject. On the right side of the neck, a typical sternomastoid head of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, and three aberrant clavicular heads of variable thickness, origin, and termination were noticed. On the left side, two sternomastoid heads were present; the medial one was of typical pattern, while the lateral was supernumerary. The cleidomastoid portion of the left sternocleidomastoid muscle was fused with the double sternomastoid segment. A strap-like muscle originating from the middle...

A cat was brought to us for the treatment of depressionanorexia, and hypovolemia. We performed an adrenocortkotropic hormone( ACTH) stimulation examination, radiography, ultrasonography, and computed tomography. On the basis of clinical symptoms,a low cortisol level, microcardia.small pulmonary vessels, and small adrenal glands. the condition was diagnosed as hypoadrenocorticism. Imaging findings were useful for obtaining additional infonnation on hypoadrenocorticism. Although hypoadrenocorticism in cats extremely rare, we would recommend its consideration as a differential diagnosis for cats with nonspecific clinical symptoms and hypovolemia. 元気消失,食欲不振を主訴とし,循環血液量低下を呈した猫にACTH (adrenocorticotropic...

Ultrasonographic evaluation of depth width ratio (D/W) of benign and malignant mammary tumors in dogs OAK
Tagawa, Michihito; Kanai, Eiichi; Shimbo, Genya; Kano, Mikiya; Kayanuma, Hideki.
Depth-width ratio (D/W) is the only quantitative item in the criteria recommended by the Japanese Ultrasound Society for the evaluation of breast tumors in humans. However, the usefulness of the D/W has not been evaluated in dogs. Eighty-six mammary masses in 34 female dogs underwent ultrasonographic examination to determine the D/W and other characteristics. Results of ultrasonographic and histopathologic examinations were compared. The D/W of malignant tumors was significantly greater than that of benign tumors, and it had a sensitivity of 56.3% and a specificity of 92.9% for the diagnosis of malignancy when the threshold of D/W was 0.7. In addition, irregular margin, polymorphous shape and heterogeneous internal echographic characteristics were...

To obtain B-mode ultrasound images of mammary glands in dairy heifers at different stages of growth, 25 clinically normal Holstein heifers were used. The heifers were divided into 5 groups (n=5/group) by stage of their growth: 2-month-old (group 1), 5-month-old (group 2), postpuberty (group 3), mid (group 4), and late (group 5) pregnancy. Furthermore, the sections of mammary glands were observed grossly at postmortem examination in one heifer in each group. Ultrasound images varied with the development of mammary glands. In group 1, the mammary glands had distinctive ultrasonographic findings: an oval to fusiform homogeneous hypoechoic structure. In all groups except group 1, mammary tissue consists of two major areas: a homogeneous, medium echogenic area...

Production Inefficiency in Fed Cattle Marketing and the Value of Sorting Pens into Alternative Marketing Groups Using Ultrasound Technology AgEcon
Koontz, Stephen R.; Hoag, Dana L.; Brethour, John R.; Walker, Jodine L..
The cattle industry batch markets animals in pens. Because of this, animals within any one pen can be both underfed and overfed. Thus, there is a production inefficiency associated with batch marketing. We simulate the value of sorting animals through weight and ultrasound measurements from original pens into smaller alternative marketing groups. Sorting exploits the production inefficiency and enables cattle feeding enterprises to avoid meat quality discounts, capture premiums, more efficiently use feed resources, and increase returns. The value of sorting is between $15 and $25 per head, with declining marginal returns as the number of sort groups increases.

The Effect of Eggshell Thickness on the Hatchability of Guinea Fowl and Pheasants Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Yamak,US; Boz,MA; Ucar,A; Sarica,M; Onder,H.
ABSTRACT Successful incubation affects the number of healthy chicks in all poultry species. This study examined the effect of eggshell thickness on the hatching rates of guinea fowl and pheasant eggs. In total, 964 guinea fowl and 1,728 pheasant eggs were used in the study. Eggshell thickness was measured directly with an ultrasound gauge. Thicknesses ranged between 0.27-0.47 mm in guinea fowl and 0.24-0.49 mm in pheasant eggs. Incubation periods were 28 days for guinea fowl and 25 days for pheasant eggs. At the end of the incubation period, unhatched eggs were broken to identify the causes of embryonic mortality. Eggs were classified as thin-, medium- and thick-shelled, and hatching rates were calculated as a function of eggshell thickness. Differences in...

The Effect of Eggshell Thickness on Hatching Traits of Partridges Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Yamak,US; Sarica,M; Boz,MA; Ucar,A.
ABSTRACT Incubation is an important factor in poultry production, particularly in species with relatively low fertility and hatchability rates. This study examined the effect of eggshell thickness on hatching traits of partridges (A. chukar). A total of 462 eggs from intensively reared partridges were separated into three groups according to eggshell thickness, which was measured ultrasonically before incubation. Hatchability, chick weight, and chick length were assessed at the end of the incubation period. Hatching times were recorded during hatching. Embryonic mortalities in unhatched eggs were classified according to mortality stage at the end of incubation. The effect of eggshell thickness on hatchability was found to be insignificant for all groups....

Using actual and ultrasound carcass information in beef genetic evaluation programs R. Bras. Zootec.
Bertrand,Joseph Keith.
Increased movement toward alliances and grid pricing in the U.S. has led to an increase interest in genetic values for carcass traits. The literature suggests that carcass genetic values are an effective tool to enhance selection for carcass traits, and that it is possible to select sires within a breed that can increase marbling score without adversely affecting external fat thickness or percent retail product relative to the breed mean. Ultrasound has been investigated as a cheaper means of collecting carcass information. The literature indicates that carcass traits measured via ultrasound on yearling seedstock will respond to selection. Although the literature is variable on the subject, there are reported genetic correlation (r g) estimates between...

Silva,Saulo da Luz e; Tarouco,Jaime Urdapilleta; Ferraz,José Bento Sterman; Gomes,Rodrigo da Costa; Leme,Paulo Roberto; Navajas,Elly Ana.
The objective of this study was to develop equations to predict retail product and fat trim (weights and percentages) for Nellore (Bos indicus) cattle. Live ultrasound measurements of the longissimus muscle area, backfat thickness at the 12th rib and rump fat depth and shrunk body weight were obtained from 218 Nellore steers to predict weights and percentages of carcass retail product, pistola retail product and fat trimmings. After slaughter, carcasses were deboned and weighed and percentages of retail cuts were obtained directly. Measurements taken directly in the carcasses explained 97% and 36% of variation in carcass retail product weight and percentage, and 94% and 36% of variation in pistola retail weight and percentage, respectively. Live...

Selection for higher body weight in Nelore cattle is effective in achieving an increase of longissimus muscle area without reducing subcutaneous fat thickness R. Bras. Zootec.
Pinheiro,Tiago Roque; Mercadante,Maria Eugênia Zerlotti; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de; Bonilha,Sarah Figueiredo Martins; Monteiro,Fábio Morato.
The objectives of this study were to estimate heritabilities and genetic and phenotypic correlations between carcass traits measured by ultrasound and other economically important traits generally used as selection criteria in beef cattle and to estimate the genetic changes in the carcass traits as a result of selection for post-yearling weight. Carcass traits measured by ultrasound at two ages (12 and 18 months) and the correlation of these traits with weight, hip height and body condition score of males (yearling) and females (post-yearling) were analyzed. Multi-trait analysis was performed using the restricted maximum likelihood method under an animal model. To demonstrate the effect of selection for growth, phenotypic and expected breeding value means...
