Adaptation Of Integrated Irrigation System To Mitigate Climate Change With Respect To Gender-Sensitive 111
Dawit, Meseret; Dinka, Megersa Olumana.
Water shortages due to climate change are becoming a global concern. Hence, improved irrigation technology resulted in water saving and reduce workload of women by ensuring investment returns. This study aims at investigating the effects of the adoption of drip irrigation combined with hand-dug wells on crop water productivity and crop yield of smallholder farmers and their perception of the scheme over two cropping seasons at Haramaya districts, Ethiopia. It was observed that the integrated irrigation system is an efficient and cost-effective method to improve crop productivity. Consequently, the drip irrigation system with water supply from hand-dug wells is recommended as a flexible system that can accommodate a variety of farm sizes and particularly...

Yield and water productivity influenced by conservation tillage and irrigation methods in wheat-maize cropping system 111
Afzalinia, Sadegh; Dehghanian, Sayed Ibrahim.
Objective of this study was to evaluate the interaction effect of conservation tillage and irrigation methods on the soil properties, crop yield and water productivity in wheat-maize cropping system. A split plot experimental design with three replications was used to conduct this study in Fars province, Iran. Surface irrigation, drip tape irrigation, and sprinkler irrigation were considered as main plots, and no-tillage, reduced tillage, and conventional tillage were considered as sub plots. Results showed that surface irrigation had the maximum wheat yield on average and the maximum maize yield was obtained from drip tape irrigation on average; while, tillage methods had no significant effect on crops yield. Results also indicated that the maximum water...

Impacts of drought and temperature stress on coffee physiology and production: a review 61
DaMatta,Fábio M.; Ramalho,José D. Cochicho.
Overall, drought and unfavourable temperatures are the major climatic limitations for coffee production. These limitations are expected to become increasingly important in several coffee growing regions due to the recognized changes in global climate, and also because coffee cultivation has spread towards marginal lands, where water shortage and unfavourable temperatures constitute major constraints to coffee yield. In this review, we examine the impacts of such limitations on the physiology, and consequently on the production of mainly Coffea arabica and C. canephora, which account for about 99 % of the world coffee bean production. The first section deals with climatic factors and the coffee plant’s requirements. The importance of controlling oxidative...

Integrating professional education, research and extensionin irrigated agriculture technology centers 70
Rosa,Jadir A.
With the objective to stimulate the use of irrigation and the electric energy fee reduction during night time program granted by the 2004 Federal law, the Government of the state of Paraná, Brazil launched the Night Irrigation Program - NPI. Beyond this discount, the farmer that adheres to NPI will get additional benefits, as completion of the electric grid without cost, subsidized financing of equipment, technical assistance, support with environmental farm compliance, and the possibility of replacing the entire pump energy matrix. As part of the NPI strategy of action, installation of learning centers for irrigation technology was planned in agricultural schools, thus contributing both to improve technical professional training in agriculture, and for...

XXI Science for life: agrosystems and sustainable production. 14
The agricultural engineer Luís Henrique Bassoi states that agriculture is not the villain of the water crisis, as it is sometimes considered, and presents data on irrigation and water management; Sustainable intensification is a viable alternative so that humankind can continue producing food and reaching record yield rates, preserving the environment and reducing the effects of its actions on the planet. Details can be seen in this special article; Elephant grass can be used as an input material for boilers, generates energy and confirms its potential as a raw material for cellulosic ethanol; Plants, animals and microorganisms can be used as biological factories for the production of high added-value molecules that positively impact treatments against...

Impact of Zero Tillage in India's Rice-Wheat Systems 31
Laxmi, Vijay; Erenstein, Olaf; Gupta, Raj K..
To date, the most widely adopted resource conserving technology (RCT) in the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP)has been zero-tillage (ZT) for wheat after rice, particularly in India. This report reviews and synthesizes the experience with zero tillage in the Indian IGP. Zero tillage of wheat after rice generates significant benefits at the farm level, both in terms of significant yield gains (6–10%, particularly due to timelier planting of wheat) and cost savings (5–10%, particularly tillage savings). These benefits explain the widespread interest of farmers and the rapidity of the diffusion across the Indian IGP, further aided by the wide applicability of this mechanical innovation. The study subsequently reports on the findings of village-level focus-group...

Accounting for water use and productivity 31
Molden, David J..
This paper presents a conceptual framework for water accounting and provides generic terminologies and procedures to describe the status of water resource use and consequences of water resources related actions. The framework applies to water resource use at three levels of analysis: a use level such as an irrigated field or household, a service level such as an irrigation or water supply system, and a water basin level that may include several uses. Water accounting terminology and performance indicators are developed and presented with examples at all the three levels. Concepts and terminologies presented are developed to be supportive in a number of activities including: identification of opportunities for water savings and increasing water...

Modelling Water Use in Thailand 31
Piyanuch, Wuttisorn; MacAulay, T. Gordon; Batterham, Robert L..
In this paper a model is proposed for analysing alternative policies that might be used in allocating water in Thailand. The model used is an integration of farm linear programming models with a spatial equilibrium model, using the so-called price-linked farm and spatial model (Batterham and MacAulay, 1994). A method of linking spatial equilibrium models and linear programming representations of farm models via the demand side as opposed to the supply side is outlined in this paper. A case study is made of the Chao Phraya Delta, an area that is progressively challenged by competing claims for water use and which needs to better allocate water resources.

Economic Change and Environmental Issues: Policy Reforms and Concerns in Australian Agriculture 31
Tisdell, Clement A..
Since the closing years of the 1980s, Australia has adopted structural adjustment policies designed to foster economic liberalism based on the market system. Today, there is little economic protection for Australian agriculture and Australia is a persistent advocate of free international agricultural trade. The natural Australian environment is not very favourable for agriculture because of low and erratic levels of rainfall and poor soils. Scarcity of water in Australia is growing and its use has become a major natural resource issue. Water availability and use of water by Australian agriculture is discussed, its environmental impacts are considered and the scope for using market systems to allocate water effectively are discussed. Other...
