Efficient use of energies on crop production helps to achieve increased production and productivity as well as profitability and competitiveness of agricultural sustainability of rural communities. The study examined profitability and energy used of rice production under two different technologies in two States of Nigeria. Primary data through structured questionnaire and interview were administered to 265 rice farmers comprising 57 semi-mechanized (Group 1) and 208 traditional (Group 2) rice farmers in both States. Results revealed that the semi-mechanized had higher income ₦370998.2 ($2348.1) per ha compared to ₦307031.1 ($1943.2) per ha from traditional technology. Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) cultivated in almost all tropical and subtropical regions of the world, has its largest output in China, and then, according to FAO data, Turkey, Iran and Brazil, being one of the main crops cultivated in State of Tocantins, Brazil. In this work was investigated the occurrence and distribution of the watermelon viruses, totaling 752 samples taken in a stratified experimental design in four representative regions of production: Gurupi (150), Lagoa da Confusao (232), Formoso do Araguaia (265) and Porto Nacional (105). The aim of this work was to produce crystallized fruit from watermelon rind. The following procedure was developed: the outer peel was removed; the material was sliced into 7 mm cubes, blanched for, 0, 5 and 10 minutes, and then treated with 10% sodium chloride solution. This product was treated with solutions of sucrose (30 to 72 °Brix), and dried in a hot air dryer at different temperatures (40, 60 and 80 °C). Products were then analyzed by a sensory panel. The experimental design used was randomized blocks and the results were analyzed by the Tukey's test. The best acceptance of the sensory panel was for the product obtained by 5 minutes blanching followed by drying at 60 °C, whose intensity values for appearance, flavor and gummosis were between 6 and 7. |

A melancia é uma das mais importantes espécies de olerícolas produzidas e consumidas no Brasil, principalmente, nas regiões Nordeste e Sul. No presente trabalho, estudou-se a resistência de genótipos de melancia em relação ao cancro-das-hastes, doença causada pelo fungo Didymella bryoniae. Dezesseis genótipos de melancia foram usados no estudo, os quais foram inoculados com disco de meio de cultura agarizado V8, contendo micélio do fungo. Utilizou-se o isolador mais agressivo, dentre 10 previamente avaliados. As plantas inoculadas foram mantidas em câmara úmida por 24 horas.
