Atlantic forcing of Western Mediterranean winter rain minima during the last 12,000 years 5
Zielhofer, Christoph; Fletcher, William J.; Mischke, Steffen; De Batist, Marc; Campbell, Jennifer F. E.; Joannin, Sebastien; Tjallingii, Rik; El Hamouti, Najib; Junginger, Annett; Stele, Andreas; Bussmann, Jens; Schneider, Birgit; Lauer, Tobias; Spitzer, Katrin; Strupler, Michael; Brachert, Thomas; Mikdad, Abdeslam.
The limited availability of high-resolution continuous archives, insufficient chronological control, and complex hydro-climatic forcing mechanisms lead to many uncertainties in palaeo-hydrological reconstructions for the Western Mediterranean. In this study we present a newly recovered 19.63 m long core from Lake Sidi Ali in the North African Middle Atlas, a transition zone of Atlantic, Western Mediterranean and Saharan air mass trajectories. With a multi-proxy approach based on magnetic susceptibility, carbonate and total organic C content: core-scanning and quantitative XRF, stable isotopes of ostracod shells, charcoal counts, Cedrus pollen abundance, and a first set of diatom data, we reconstruct Western Mediterranean hydro-climatic variability,...

Facteurs de contrôle sur le fonctionnement du système turbiditique du Rhône depuis le Dernier Maximum Glaciaire 5
Lombo Tombo, Swesslath.
Turbidite systems are accumulations of fluvial sediment on the continental margins. They are mainly made of « turbidites » deposited after the flow of turbidity currents inside submarine canyons and channels. Their structure and composition are controlled by global and regional environmental changes such as sea level and climate. The two fundamental parameters that govern their functioning are the production of sediment in the river watersheds and the capability and reactivity of the transfer to the turbidite system. In this work we show that for the last 24,000 years the functioning of the Rhone turbidite system has shown rapid changes under the control of sea level and sediment production fluctuations. Our results are based on a millennial time-scale...

Late Pleistocene-Holocene history of a tectonically active segment of the continental margin (Nekor basin, Western Mediterranean, Morocco) 5
Lafosse, M.; Gorini, C.; Le Roy, P.; Alonso, B.; D'Acremont, E.; Ercilla, G.; Rabineau, Marina; Vazquez, J. T.; Rabaute, A.; Ammar, A..
In active basins, tectonics can segment the continental shelf and control its stratigraphic architecture and physiography. Segmentation can explain the local evolution and morphology of the continental shelf because of sea-level variations, local tectonic segmentation and hydrodynamic processes. Here we investigate the tectonically active Morocco continental margin (southern Alboran Sea) using high-resolution seismic profiles and multibeam bathymetric data. The active faults bounding the transtensive Nekor basin triggered the segmentation of the shelf into three sectors showing different subsidence rates: a western sector corresponding to an extensive fault relay, a central sector corresponding to the subsiding Al-Hoceima Bay and an eastern sector...

Sea-level control on turbidite activity in the Rhone canyon and the upper fan during the Last Glacial Maximum and early Deglacial 5
Lombo Tombo, Swesslath; Dennielou, Bernard; Berne, Serge; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Toucanne, Samuel; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Fontanier, Christophe.
The timing, routing and processes of sediment transfer from the continents to the oceans at millennial time-scale are still largely unknown. The potential of turbidite systems (dominantly deposited during sea-level lowstands) to record global or regional environmental fluctuations is usually under-exploited because of the difficulty to obtain robust chronostratigraphic constraints in turbiditic deposits, and therefore to tie changes in sedimentary processes to environmental fluctuations. We were able to obtain a millennial-scale chronostratigraphy based on oxygen isotopes of the scarce foraminifera preserved in turbiditic deposits of the Rhone Turbidite System within the Western Mediterranean. Our results show that 1) objective criteria can be defined for...

Mesoscale and Sub-Mesoscale structures observed during High resolution surveys in Western Mediterranean Basin 5
Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Louazel, Stephanie; Correard, Stephanie.
The Mediterranean Sea is often referred as a “pocket ocean” exhibiting many processes that are primary interest the global ocean circulation given the opportunity to investigate a large panel of oceanic features in a relatively restrained area. Recent field experiments based on the multi-plateform integrated monitoring MOOSE or on intensive targeted experiment HYMEX revisited the hydrology and the dynamics of the Western Basin. Such approaches emphasized the ubiquity of the fine scale dynamics in the Mediterranean dynamics. An overview of the observed processes during 5 recent fields experiments are  presented and discussed regarding meso- and submeso-scale processes.

Discovery of Messinian Canyons and new seismic stratigraphic model, Offshore Provence (SE France): implications for the hydrographic network reconstruction 5
Tassy, A.; Fournier, F.; Munch, P.; Borgomano, J.; Thinon, I.; Fabri, Marie-claire; Rabineau, M.; Arfib, B.; Begot, J.; Beslier, M. -o; Cornee, J. -j.; Fournillon, A.; Gorini, C.; Guennoc, P.; Leonide, P.; Oudet, J.; Paquet, F.; Sage, F.; Toullec, R..
The interpretation of high-resolution 2D marine seismic profiles together with the analysis of sea-bottom cores allowed a stratigraphic and structural framework of the Provence continental shelf to be proposed. The integration of onshore and offshore stratigraphy, structure and geomorphology provided new insights into Messinian paleotopography and paleohydrography. A geological map of the offshore Provence continental shelf, isobath map of the base Plio-Quaternary surface are presented for the first time in this area. The base Plio-Quaternary surface is a polyphased unconformity that is composed of deep canyons developed by fluvial erosion during the Messinian event, and wave-cut surfaces formed during post-Messinian transgressions. The study evidenced a...

Un modèle géométrique et stratigraphique des séquences de dépôts quaternaires sur la marge du golfe du lion : enregistrement des cycles climatiques de 100 000 ans 5
Rabineau, Marina.
The up to 70 km wide continental shelf of the Golfe du Lion has been the object of numerous investigationss since the early days of Oceanography. Yet several key questions have remained unanswered and are still controversial. Among these questions are: What are the relationships between sedimentary sequences, Quaternary glacioeustatic cycles and tectonics? What is the sequence duration? What are the mechanisms of deposition? A study of the Very High Resolution (VHR) seismic reflection (Sparker) data collected by Ifremer between 1992 and 1998 on the outer shelf and upper slope offshore of Sète in the Languedoc region gives a new insight into these issues. The surveyed area covers 40 x 40 km with a line spacing of 400-1000 m. Useful depth of penetration is...

The wide continental shelf of the Gulf of Lion (up to 70 km) has been the object of numerous investigations since the early days of oceanography. Yet, the question of sequences duration, the mechanisms of deposition and factors implied remained unanswered. A study of a very dense grid of Very High Resolution (VHR) seismic reflection (Sparker) data associated with surficial cores both, collected by IFREMER between 1992 and 2001 on the outer shelf and upper slope offshore of Sète in the Languedoc region gives a new insight into these issues. Analysis of the 3D geometry of the sedimentary record reveals a basic depositional pattern consisting of a pair of horizontally juxtaposed and downlapping prisms. The Balearic current and volume transports in the Balearic basin 5
Garcialadona, E; Castellon, A; Font, J; Tintore, J.
The Balearic basin is a semi-enclosed basin located in the western Mediterranean Sea, connecting the Gulf of Lions and the Alboran basin. While the characteristics and circulation of the water masses have been rather well established, the exchanges with adjacent basins, essential to our understanding of the circulation in the western Mediterranean and for validating outputs of general circulation models, have never been determined in detail. We present here the data from the FE-89 (June 1989) Spanish cruise, during which high-resolution CTD and ADCP measurements were performed on the open boundaries of the Balearic basin. The fluxes for all the boundaries were calculated in a quasi-synoptic fashion. The values found in the Ibiza and Mallorca channels...

The north Ligurian margin is a complex geological area in many ways. It has witnessed several phases of highly contrasting deformation styles, at both crustal scale and that of shallower cover tectonics, simultaneously or in quick succession, and with significant spatial variability. This complex interplay is mirrored in the resulting intricate structures that make it hard to identify active faults responsible for both, the significant seismicity observed, and the tectonic inversion undergone by the margin, identified at longer time scales on morphostructural grounds. We present here the first preliminary results of the leg 1 of SEFASILS cruise, conducted in 2018 offshore Monaco, in an effort to answer these questions by means of modern deep seismic...

Updating temperature and salinity mean values and trends in the Western Mediterranean: The RADMED project 5
Vargas-yanez, M.; Garcia-martinez, M. C.; Moya, F.; Balbin, R.; Lopez-jurado, J. L.; Serra, M.; Zunino Rodriguez, Patricia; Pascual, J.; Salat, J..
The RADMED project is devoted to the implementation and maintenance of a multidisciplinary monitoring system around the Spanish Mediterranean waters. This observing system is based on periodic multidisciplinary cruises covering the coastal waters, continental shelf and slope waters and some deep stations (>2000 m) from the Westernmost Alboran Sea to Barcelona in the Catalan Sea, including the Balearic Islands. This project was launched in 2007 unifying and extending some previous monitoring projects which had a more reduced geographical coverage. Some of the time series currently available extend from 1992, while the more recent ones were initiated in 2007. The present work updates the available time series up to 2015 (included) and shows the capability...

Evolution of rifted continental margins: The case of the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean Basin) 5
Bache, Francois; Olivet, Jean-louis; Gorini, Christian; Aslanian, Daniel; Labails, Cinthia; Rabineau, Marina.
The formation of rifted continental margins has long been explained by numerous physical models. However, field observations are still lacking to validate or constrain these models. This study presents major new observations on the broad continental margin of the Gulf of Lions, based on a large amount of varied data. Two contrasting regions characterize the thinned continental crust of this margin. One of these regions corresponds to a narrow rift zone (40–50 km wide) that was highly thinned and stretched during rifting. In contrast with this domain, a large part of the margin subsided slowly during rifting and then rapidly after rifting. The thinning of this domain cannot be explained by stretching of the upper crust. We can thus recognize a zonation of...

Algal flora associated with a Halophila stipulacea (Forsskal) Ascherson (Hydrocharitaceae, Helobiae) stand in the western Mediterranean 5
Rindi, F; Maltagliati, F; Rossi, F; Acunto, S; Cinelli, F.
Halophila stipulacea, a seagrass introduced into the Mediterranean Sea as a Lessepsian immigrant, is nowadays common in the eastern Mediterranean, and it was recently recorded in the western Mediterranean; very little information is available about the algal flora associated with this species. During a survey of a Halophila stipulacea stand at Vulcano Island (Eolian Islands, western Mediterranean), samples were collected at three depths (5 m, 15 m and 25 m) for identification of algal epiphytes. Thirty-six species of macroalgae were found. The epiflora of the leaves consisted of 20 species, the others being mixed with or entangled in the rhizomes. On the leaves, Ceramium tenerrimum, Dasya corymbifera, Polysiphonia cfr. tenerrima, Spyridia filamentosa,...

Morphology of retrogressive failures in the Eastern Rhone Interfluve during the Last Glacial Maximum (Gulf of Lions, Western Mediterranean) 5
Badhani, Shray; Cattaneo, Antonio; Dennielou, Bernard; Leroux, Estelle; Colin, Florent; Thomas, Yannick; Jouet, Gwenael; Rabineau, Marina; Droz, Laurence.
The Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean Sea) is a SW-NE oriented passive continental margin formed since the Oligocene. It presents small to large scale mass movement features suggesting a long history of seafloor instability. Of particular interest are the two surficial large mass-transport deposits along the Rhone turbiditic levee, known as the Rhone Eastern and Western Mass-Transport Deposits (REMTD and RWMTD). With the help of the recently acquired multi-beam bathymetric, sub-bottom profiler, high-resolution seismic and sedimentological data, we investigate the morphology, timing, kinematics, and possible triggering mechanisms of the source area of the REMTD, which we refer to as the Eastern Rhone Interfluve Slide (ERIS). ERIS has an estimated run-out...

Seasonal and interannual variability of zooplankton community in waters off Mallorca island (Balearic Sea, Western Mediterranean): 1994-1999 5
Fernandez De Puelles, Ml; Pinot, Jm; Valencia, J.
During 1994-1999, the mesozooplankton community was sampled monthly in the upper sea layer (up to 100 m) along a cross-shelf transect of three stations in waters off Mallorca island. Copepods formed the most abundant group (54%) followed by appendicularians (17%), cladocerans and meroplankton larvae (13%). The abundance of all these groups decreased in the offshore direction but it was not the case for other zooplankton groups. A clear seasonal cycle was evident consisting of a general decrease of the abundance from the beginning to the end of the year. In addition to the general increase during late winter and spring, an absolute maximum was detected in May, particularly important at the neritic station and a relative maximum in March and October. During...

Growth parameters of any species are fundamental for biological or dynamic studies. The quality of the estimation for these parameters directly impacts on species stock assessment and, as a consequence, on fisheries management. In order to improve fishery and species stock management, growth analysis, especially by sex, is recommended. In this study, otoliths were used to estimate growth parameters of Merluccius merluccius Rafinesque, 1810. Hake is well-known as being a species in which otolith interpretation is extremely difficult. To estimate growth parameters, the first daily increment was validated as the tool for age determination. Otolith interpretation was done according to the last results of ICES cooperative research report. In total, a sample of...

Contraintes par imagerie sismique pénétrante sur l'évolution d'une marge Cénozoïque réactivée en compression (cas de la marge algérienne, secteur de Tipaza) 5
Lepretre, Angelique.
The inversion of passive margins appears to be one of the first steps towards the initiation of new subduction zones. This crucial step in plate tectonics nevertheless still raises many questions. The study of margins currently reactivated by compressional tectonics is thus essential to better understand this process. These margins are uncommon, located in different geodynamic settings, and the factors determining their evolution are poorly constrained. The Algerian margin, located in North Africa, is one of handful of modern examples worldwide. The evolution of this margin, rifted during the Miocene, in a back-arc setting, is part ofthe complex puzzle of the western Mediterranean. Since a few million years, the margin has suffered inversion and...

Impact of relative sea level and rapid climate changes on the architecture and lithofacies of the Holocene Rhone subaqueous delta (Western Mediterranean Sea) 5
Fanget, Anne-sophie; Berne, Serge; Jouet, Gwenael; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Dennielou, Bernard; Maillet, Gregoire M.; Tondut, Mathieu.
The modern Rhone delta in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) is a typical wave-dominated delta that developed after the stabilization of relative sea level following the last deglacial sea-level rise. Similar to most other deltas worldwide, it displays several stacked parasequences and lobes that reflect the complex interaction between accommodation, sediment supply and autogenic processes on the architecture of a wave-dominated delta. The interpretation of a large set of newly acquired very high-resolution seismic and sedimentological data, well constrained by 14C dates, provides a refined three-dimensional image of the detailed architecture (seismic bounding surfaces, sedimentary facies) of the Rhone subaqueous delta, and allows us to propose a...

Microbial activity at the deep water sediment boundary layer in two highly productive systems in the Western Mediterranean: the Almeria-Oran front and the Malaga upwelling 5
Bianchi, A; Calafat, A; De Wit, R; Garcin, J; Tholosan, O; Cacho, I; Canals, M; Fabres, J; Grout, H; Masque, P; Sanchez-cabeza, Ja; Sempere, R.
Microbiological and biogeochemical studies were carried out in sediments and near bottom waters in the upwelling area off the Malaga coast and in the Almeria-Oran frontal zone. In these nutrient-rich conditions, metabolic activity is potentially limited by oxygen availability through the sediment depth. In the surficial sediments of the frontal zone, however, oxygen penetrated to a depth of 4 cm, allowing oxic mineralisation processes to occur throughout the layer. In the surficial sediments of the upwelling area, oxygen penetration was limited to the top 2.5 cm, leading to anoxic conditions. Glutamate respiration and global oxygen uptake rates were clearly higher than in the frontal zone. In the superficial sediments of the frontal zone, bacteria were...
