The problem of discards in fisheries ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Caillart, B; Tingley, D.
Introduction : It is now clear that the world's fishery resources are being subjected to exploitation at or above their capacity to produce maximum sustainable yields. At the same time as these trends are being felt, there is a very large wastage of fishery resources from discarding unwanted catches at sea. At the end of each fishing operation a part of the catch is often returned to the sea after sorting by the fishermen. A 1994 FAO report provided an estimate of global discards in commercial fisheries of 27 millions of tons per year compared to 50 million tons of direct human consumption. A more recent FAO document estimated that discards were in the order of 20 million tons in 1997. The majority of the world's fisheries are multi-species in nature and...

Global Oceanographic Data Archaeology and Rescue (GODAR) and World Ocean Database Projects OceanDocs
Levitus, Sydney.
Since its inception in 1993 as an IOC project, the Global Oceanographic Data Archaeology and Rescue (GODAR) Project continues its progress in locating, collecting, quality controlling, and disseminating in electronic form, historical ocean profile and plankton data that are at risk of loss due to media decay. Only data for the pre-1992 period are considered to be “historical” data for the purposes of the GODAR project. Since its inception in 2001 the IOC World Ocean Database (WOD) Project continues adding new data types, e.g., temperature and salinity from Gliders and variables, e.g., tracers such as freons as well as archiving standard oceanographic data. Special attention has been paid to the speed of transfer of modern data into integrated,...

The World of Organic Agriculture. Statistics and Emerging Trends 2014 Organic Eprints
Organic agriculture is practiced in 164 countries, and more than 37.5 million hectares of agricultural land are managed organically by 1.9 million farmers. The global sales of organic food and drink reached almost 64 billion US dollars in 2012. The 15th edition of The World of Organic Agriculture documents recent developments in global organic agriculture. It includes contributions from representatives of the organic sector from throughout the world and provides comprehensive organic farming statistics that cover surface area under organic management, specific information about land use in organic systems, numbers of farms and other operator types as well as selected market data.

Tasmanian Organics, Leader or Lagger? Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Tasmania, Australia's island state, appears to have a huge potential for organic agriculture. The state has a higher proportion of rural dwellers than other Australian states, it has a long tradition of successful agricultural pursuits dating from the earliest European settlement, it is the only state with its own own organic certifier, and geographically it is well placed to capitalise on its clean and green image. Statistics reporting organic farms per capita for Tasmania and Australia are presented and compared with other jurisdictions.

Atlas of Organics: Four maps of the world of organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Paull, John; Hennig, Benjamin.
This paper presents four maps of the world of organic agriculture. Density equalising maps (cartograms) have previously been published of the world of organic agriculture based on the reported hectares of certified organically managed agriculture land. The four maps in the present atlas of organic agriculture are visual presentations of current global organics data: (a) certified organic agriculture hectares; (b) certified organic wildculture hectares; (c) total certified organic production hectares (organic agriculture plus wildculture plus forestry plus aquaculture); (d) certified organic producers. Australia dominates in the world map of the organic agriculture hectares, Europe is strongly represented, and Africa is weakly represented. Finland dominates...

Willer, Helga; Garibay, Salvador V..
Voluntary sustainability standards have grown rapidly in number and importance in global commodity markets over the past decade. The growth of voluntary sustainability standards has occurred in parallel with growing recognition of the importance of economic drivers in implementing sustainable development, as evidenced by the global call for a green economy. The State of Sustainability Initiatives Review 2014 reports on systems and market trends across 16 of the most important standards initiatives operating across 10 key commodity sectors. The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) contribtued data on organic agriculture, based on the data collected in the framework of its annual report on organic agriculture worldwide...

Current World Status of Organic Temperate Fruits Organic Eprints
Granatstein, David; Kirby, Elisabeth; Willer, Helga.
Consumption of organic food has steadily increased in the primary markets of the European Union and North America. However, the statistical information base to describe this growth is either incomplete or inaccessible, and sometimes inaccurate. In the U.S., fruits and vegetables make up 40% of organic food sales, implying that the expanding overall market has also increased demand for organic temperate fruits such as apple, grape, and strawberry. Organic fruit in several European countries comprises over 5% of all fruit sales. Data on organic temperate fruit production have been compiled by FiBL and Washington State University. In 2006, there were at least 250,000 ha of organic temperate fruit (pome, stone, grapes, and berries) under production...

Biodynamic agriculture shows steady global growth Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
New figures released by Demeter-International reveal the steady global growth of biodynamic agriculture. Certified biodynamic hectares are up 2% (from 144,497 to 147,495 hectares), biodynamic processors are up 5% (from 456 to 478), and biodynamic distributors are up 3% (from 185 to 190). The number of countries with Demeter-International certified biodynamic activity increased from 48 to 52. Croatia and Peru enter the list with newly reported biodynamic farms, and Bulgaria and Ukraine enter the list with new biodynamic distributors. There is considerable volatility in the statistics, with most countries reporting changes in the statistics for 2012 compared to the previous year. The three leading countries, based on biodynamic hectares, are Germany (with...

The Future of Organic Agriculture: Otopia or Oblivion? Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Organic agriculture could feed the world, but will it? A state of Otopia, an organic Utopia of 100% organic food and organic agriculture, is a dream, or is it a pipe-dream? And if a dream, might it manifest in four decades or 54 decades? The stated goal of the organic movement is the adoption worldwide of organic agriculture. That task has a long path to travel, with organic agriculture currently accounting for 0.8% of agricultural land worldwide. Two roads to Otopia are extrapolated from the rate of growth of global organics exhibited over the past decade. If an arithmetic rate of growth - think simple interest - continued indefinitely then a state of Otopia would take 544 years (2553). Under a geometric growth scenario - think compound interest - Otopia...

Organics Olympiad 2007 - Perspectives on the Global State of Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Organic food has been described as the world’s fastest growing food sector, and many countries have now set targets for conversion to Organic Agriculture. The stated goal of the organic movement is the adoption worldwide of Organic Agriculture. That task has a long path to travel, with Organic Agriculture currently accounting for 1.8% of worldwide agricultural land. One strategy for success in any endeavour, is: find out who "the winners” are, identify what they are doing, and do that; and there is a corollary to this maxim. Which countries are leaders in the adoption of Organic Agriculture? In the absence of a single comprehensive index of organic-ness, this paper identifies 12 indices of organic-ness, and presents the leadership by country, for each of...

An Analysis of Organic Agriculture in Turkey: The Current Situation and Basic Constraints Organic Eprints
Özbilge, Zeynep.
This article gives information about the current situation of Turkish organic agriculture, especially by comparing the official recognition for organic farming in the European Union with that of Turkey and summarizes the existing constraints. The analysis indicates that the further development of Turkish organic agriculture depends upon the development of the domestic organic market and Turkey has to fulfill a number of conditions to provide it. It is needed that the Turkish state both encourages organic production for the domestic market and supports organic agriculture by all means.
