RESUMEN La deficiencia de zinc en humanos produce disminución de antioxidantes, asociados a taurina, en la retina y se relaciona con adaptación anormal a la oscuridad, cataratas, ceguera y degeneración macular. Existe escasa evidencia acerca del efecto del zinc sobre el sistema de taurina en retina de mamíferos, por lo cual estudiamos el efecto del zinc sobre el transportador de taurina (TAUT) y los transportadores de zinc (ZnT-1 y 3) usando el quelante de zinc extracelular, ácido dietileno-triamino-penta-acético (DTPA), mediante inmunocitoquímica e inmunohistoquímica fluorescentes en células ganglionares (CG) y en las capas de la retina de ratas. Las vitaminas (Vit.) C, E y A, junto al zinc (Zn++) y cobre (Cu++) colaboran en la prevención de las comorbilidades asociadas a la obesidad. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar las concentraciones séricas (Cs) de Vit. C, E y A, así como las del Zn++ y Cu++ en púberes con exceso de peso (EP) y resistencia a la insulina (RI). El estudio fue descriptivo, correlacional, de campo y transversal. Las variables se compararon entre los púberes normopeso (NP)/sin RI y quienes tenían EP (con y sin RI). Desde el punto de vista nutricional es necesario conocer la concentración sérica de algunos minerales en niños y para poder interpretar los resultados es imprescindible comparar con valores de referencia. El objetivo de este trabajo es determinar valores de referencia de cobre, zinc y selenio en suero de niños. Se utilizaron muestras de suero de niños de ambos sexos (n = 42) clínicamente sanos, elegidos al azar, entre 1 mes y 12 años de edad, concurrentes para control al Servicio de Pediatría del Hospital de Clínicas "José de San Martín", Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires. Validación de la determinación de manganeso, molibdeno y zinc por plasma de acoplamiento inductivo ABCL

Se describe la validación de un método para la determinación de manganeso, molibdeno y zinc, a niveles traza, en soluciones acuosas, mediante espectroscopia de emisión-plasma inductivo de argón. Se optimizó y validó la cuantificación de manganeso, molibdeno y zinc en solución acuosa ácida usando un espectrómetro de emisión atómica de plasma inductivo. Se determinaron: selectividad/especificidad, linealidad, repetibilidad y precisión intermedia utilizando materiales de referencia, y sesgo contrastando contra material de referencia certificado de matriz. Proteína C reactiva, cobre y zinc séricos en un grupo de pacientes pediátricos críticos ABCL

Se estudiaron 19 niños entre 1 y 36 meses de vida, internados en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátricos (UCIP) del Hospital "Dr. Pedro de Elizalde". Las muestras de sangre fueron extraídas en ayunas, al ingreso en UCIP. Se determinó la concentración de proteína C reactiva (PCR) -por inmunodifusión radial cuantitativa-, cobre (Cu) y zinc (Zn) -por absorción atómica-, calculándose la relación Cu/Zn. Como valores de referencia (VR) se utilizaron los reportados por la bibliografía para el mismo grupo etario. Zinc y cobre séricos y la relación zinc/cobre en un grupo de niños del sur de Valencia, Venezuela ABCL

Se estudiaron las concentraciones séricas de zinc (Zn) y cobre (Cu), y la relación zinc/cobre (Zn/Cu) en 82 niños aparentemente sanos de 4 a 14 años de la ciudad de Valencia, Venezuela. Las concentraciones de Zn y Cu se determinaron por espectrofotometría de absorción atómica y el estado nutricional con los índices Peso/Talla, Talla/Edad e Índice de Masa Corporal. Los resultados de Zn (&#956;g/dL), Cu (&#956;g/dL) y la relación Zn/Cu fueron expresados en media±desviación estándar: (84,2±15,9), (125,4±24,8) y (0,69±0,18) respectivamente, sin diferencia significativa entre niños y niñas. Effect of liming on micronutrient availability to soybean grown in soil under different lengths of time under no tillage Agronomy

The effect of liming on the availability of micronutrients to soybean cultivated during different numbers of years under no tillage (NT) was investigated. The treatments consisted of the number of years under NT (three, six, and nine years) and five rates of lime (0, 33, 67 and 100% of the amount calculated to raise soil base saturation to 70%) broadcast on soil surface plus the rate of 100% broadcast with incorporation in the 0-0.20 m layer of a clayey Red Oxisol. Este trabalho teve por objetivo determinar as exigências líquidas de zinco (Zn), cobre (Cu) e ferro (Fe) de cordeiros Santa Inês em pastejo na região semiárida. Os animais com peso vivo entre 20 e 30 kg apresentaram conteúdo corporal no peso de corpo vazio (PCV) para esses minerais de 60,26 a 76,37 mg kg-1, 10,78 a 16,72 mg kg-1 e 133,44 a 126,98 mg kg-1, respectivamente. Observou-se que com o aumento do PCV, as concentrações de Cu e Zn também aumentavam, enquanto a de Fe diminuía. As exigências líquidas para cordeiros em regime de pastejo variaram de 1,69 a 7,86 mg dia-1 para Cu e 7,20 a 27,4 mg dia-1 para Zn. There, recruited neurons differentiate and give rise to zinc containing axons directed to the rest of cortical areas, thus resulting in a continuous growth of the medial cortex and its zinc-enriched axonal projection. This work aimed to evaluate density of associative diazotrophic bacteria populations in soil and grass root samples from heavy metal contaminated sites, and to characterize isolates from these populations, both, phenotypically (Zinc, Cadmium and NaCl tolerance in vitro, and protein profiles) and genotypically (16S rDNA sequencing), as compared to type strains of known diazotrophic species. Based on indirect evidence, a role for synaptically released copper and zinc as modulators of neuronal activity has been proposed. To test this proposal directly, we studied the effect of copper, zinc, and other divalent cations on voltage-dependent currents in dissociated toad olfactory neurons and on their firing rate induced by small depolarizing currents. Divalent cations in the nanomolar range sped up the activation kinetics and increased the amplitude of the inward sodium current. In the present study we characterized the capacity of zinc to protect lipids and proteins from Fe2+-initiated oxidative damage. The effects of zinc on lipid oxidation were investigated in liposomes composed of brain phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylserine (PS) at a molar relationship of 60:40 (PC:PS, 60:40). Lipid oxidation was evaluated as the oxidation of cis-parinaric acid or as the formation of 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS). BACKGROUND: The hippocampal CA3 area contains large amounts of vesicular zinc in the mossy fiber terminals which is released during synaptic activity, depending on presynaptic calcium. Another characteristic of these synapses is the presynaptic localization of high concentrations of group II metabotropic glutamate receptors, specifically activated by DCG-IV. Previous work has shown that DCG-IV affects only mossy fiber-evoked responses but not the signals from associational-commissural afferents, blocking mossy fiber synaptic transmission. Since zinc is released from mossy fibers even for single stimuli and it is generally assumed to be co-released with glutamate, the aim of the work was to investigate the effect of DCG-IV on mossy fiber zinc signals....

Geobacillus stearothermophilus LV cadA gene mediates resistance to cadmium, lead and zinc in zntA mutants of Salmonella entérica serovar Typhimurium Biol. Res.

Salmonella entérica serovar Typhimurium cells expressing the cadA gene of Geobacillus stearothermophilus LV exhibit a hypersensitive phenotype to cadmium chloride. Deletion of the ORF STM3576 from the Salmonella genome resulted in cadmium, lead and zinc sensitivity, confirming that this ORF is a homologue of the zntA gene. The observed sensitivity was reverted upon expression of the G. stearothermophilus LV cadA gene. These results indicate that the cadA gene product is involved in Cd, Pb and Zn resistance as a classical P-type ATPase and strongly suggest that the observed hypersensitive phenotype to these metals can be related to the function of the host ·zntA gene product
