The aim of this study was evaluate the use of evaporative cooling system (ECS) of air as an alternative to improve the thermal environment, aiming at egg production (EP) of Rhode Island Red laying hens (2.25 kg). The climatological data of air temperature and relative humidity used to estimate Temperature and Humidity Index (THI) and EP were collected in the IAPAR (Instituto Agronômico do Paraná) meteorological field stations from Paraná State. The use of ECS of air provides a significant reduction in the THI values, in all locations and periods of the years studied. The study was conducted in 32 dairy production systems (DPS) located in the city of Toledo-Paraná, and aimed at verifying the practices of hygiene applied during milking, as well as,  observing their correlation with the total bacterial count (TBC), the somatic cell count (SCC) and the milk composition. We obtained 24 milk analyses in two years of collecting for each DPS. Along with the milk analysis, we collected some information from DPS by conducting a questionnaire where data were obtained,  regarding to the  practices  of  hygiene  during milking. This study aimed to determine the performance and serum lipids of rabbits with 35 to 65 days of age fed with diets enriched with meal filleting residue of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The rabbits were randomly allocated to five treatments with the inclusion of different levels of meal (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4%) in the ration. Diets were formulated to meet the requirements for growing animals. At slaughter blood was collected from each animal in the right jugular vein for analysis of serum lipids. The objective of this study was to evaluate the yield, nutritional value and potential ruminal degradation of Tifton 85 hay (Cynodon spp.) harvested at four regrowth ages (28, 35, 42 and 49 days) and fertilized with two nitrogen doses (N; 100 and 300 kg N ha-1). This trial evaluated the addition of Lactobacillus plantarum, L. brevis and Enterococcus faecium combo additive against a control treatment. The silages were made in laboratory silos that were stored for 30, 60, 90 or 120 days before opening. We evaluated the chemical composition of the forage before and after ensiling and the fermentative losses of silages. The additive decreased (p &lt; 0.01) effluent production (11.4 kg ton-1) compared to control silage (14.0 kg ton-1), but it increased (p &lt; 0.01) the Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) and Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) from 45.6% and 24.5% to 47.0 and 25.1% for control and additive silages, respectively. Evaluation of body weight prediction Equations in growing heifers Animal Sciences

This study was realized to evaluate prediction models for body weight (BW) using body measurements as heart girth (HG), wither height (WH), hip width (HW), body length (BL) and hip height (HH), and develop new Equations to predict the BW of Holstein and crossbred heifers. Prediction Equations (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) proposed in previous studies were tested, while body measurements, which were more significant in terms of predicting BW, were used to obtain new Equations. Heart girth was the body measurement with the greater correlation with BW. Equation 4 presented the best prediction results, showing a low average deviation, high accuracy and precision. The objectives of this study were to investigate the associations among direct and indirect indicators of land use by cattle and to understand the role of some environmental factors on the definition of these indicators. The study was carried out in two areas, Nature Reserve (63.6 ha) and Private Area (30.4 ha), with 53 Hereford animals in each area. This study evaluated the effect of using fresh sugar cane, sugar cane silage with or without Lactobacillus buchneri, and burnt sugar cane silage with or without L. buchneri on ingestive behavior, nitrogen balance and synthesis of microbial nitrogen compounds of dairy cows. Five ¾ Holstein x Gir crossbred cows, assigned to a 5 x 5 Latin square design, were given diets with a 60:40 forage: concentrate ratio on a dry matter basis, to meet an average body weight of 550 kg and production of 15 kg of milk per day. Evaluation of digestion procedures in Kjeldahl method to quantify total nitrogen in analyses applied to animal nutrition Animal Sciences

The effects of the salt-to-metal catalyst ratio and amount of digestion mixture on total nitrogen content in different materials using the Kjeldahl method were evaluated. Four samples with low nitrogen contents and four samples with high nitrogen contents were analyzed. The study evaluated two ratios of salt (sodium sulfate) to metal catalyst (copper sulfate) in the digestion mixture (10:1 and 20:1) and three amounts of digestion mixture per sample (1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 g 200 mg-1). There was an interaction between low-nitrogen material and amount of digestion mixture on nitrogen contents. Avaliaram-se a composição química, o teor de compostos secundários, a degradabilidade in situ, a anatomia e a degradabilidade dos tecidos do feno de maniçoba, a partir de plantas em início de frutificação, oriundas de uma vegetação de caatinga em Ibimirim, Estado do Pernambuco. O caule apresentou células com variados graus de lignificação, destacando-se a presença de fibras gelatinosas, parênquima medular lignificado e espessas paredes celulares no xilema. As folhas se destacam pela presença da estrutura girder, caracterizam-se pela grande quantidade de mesofilo, constituído por células com paredes delgadas, contribuindo para a degradabilidade de matéria seca.
