A STUDY OF RICE PRICES AgEcon
Kiet, Nguyen Tang.
This paper tries to study rice price movements and relationships that might exist between rice prices of different selected countries; furthermore, some demand relations for rice will be constructed. Factors influencing consumption such as changes in population and incomes will also be discussed. The period under study will be from after the Second World War to 1960. Rice price fluctuations can be observed from year to year both in local markets and in international trade. This is due to differing demand and supply conditions. On the one hand, production has greatly fluctuated, because of acreage and yield variations; on the other, rice consumption has changed patterns in many countries.

AN OCTOBER PREDICTION OF THE DETROIT NOVEMBER PRICE FOR EGGS AT THE WHOLESALE LEVEL AgEcon
Lee, Moon K..
The primary objective of this study is to formulate a multiple regression equation for predicting the November average price of Grade A, white, large eggs delivered in Detroit, Michigan. To accomplish the objective, several equations will be tried. The equation with the highest predicting power will be chosen to predict November price in 1970 as of October of that year. October was chosen on the basis that October price difference between medium and large size affected the November price considerable. Therefore, the factor just could not be dropped. The secondary objective in the study is to examine demand elasticities for eggs. Egg producers and policy makers may have the base in making decisions if egg marketing order is ineffective in the future.

EXCHANGE RATE ARRANGEMENTS IN THE CFA FRANC ZONE: ALTERNATIVES TO FIXED PARITY AgEcon
Dibley, David Leland.
The CFA franc, currency for 13 West and Central African countries (the CFA zone), has been tied to the French franc via a fixed exchange rate arrangement since 1948. Proponents of the fixed parity rate argue that it provides price stability for the African countries, while opponents contend that it contributes to poor economic performance by sending incorrect signals to the domestic economy. Further, France's ability to maintain the current arrangement is uncertain in light of the approaching economic integration in Europe. After reviewing the history of the CFA zone, this paper assesses the appropriateness of the fixed rate arrangement for the zone, with emphasis placed on recent events, especially the1994 devaluation of the CFA franc. The paper then...

NATIONAL INCOME AND EMPLOYMENT IMPACTS OF RAILROAD BRANCH LINE ABANDONMENT: CONCEPTUALIZATION AND MEASUREMENT AgEcon
Fishbein, Robert Eric.
This study seeks to contribute to the development of procedures which provide useful information to decision-makers and affected people regarding the national income and employment impacts of railroad branch line abandonment. There are three major parts to this paper. The first part probes the underlying assumptions of public investment analysis. It is noted that non-Pareto optimal welfare changes occur whether or not abandonment takes place. The decision of whether or not to subsidize branch lines is based on the decision-makers' evaluation of certain important consequences, expressed in terms of criterion variables. It is argued that analyses should provide information regarding criterion variables to which decision-makers can assign values in the...

U.S. FARM NON-REAL ESTATE DEBT: A PROFILE AND FORECAST AgEcon
Williams, Anne Nadia.
No macroeconomic theory of debt exists. This study proposes that the supply of and demand for farm non-real estate debt (excluding commodity credit corporation program payments) can be explained by levels of income, wealth, input price variables and the cost of money. The effects of three macroeconomic variables, deflated gross national product, deflated exchange rate and inflation are also studied. Positive relationships between all variables (except exchange rate) and non-real estate debt are hypothesized by generalizing about the debt attitudes of the subgroup of farmers with sales of $100,000 and over. This group was selected as the focus group because it has been the largest contributor to aggregate farm non-real estate debt in recent years. The...

ANALYSIS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMERCE AND MARKETING IN THE SMALL ENTERPRISE SECTOR: THE CASE OF JAMAICA AgEcon
Sulaimana, Annette.
It is difficult to formulate a single definition for "small scale enterprise." Most countries have their own definition, reflecting more or less the stages achieved by each in economic development. However, there are certain basic characteristics of small enterprises in most countries: (1) the capital outlay is relatively small; (2) the operations are relatively less mechanized than those of large scale enterprises; and (3) they are geographically dispersed. Recent concerns for the problem of employment creation and income distribution in less developed countries has sparked an interest in the role of small scale enterprises in the process of economic development. The industrialization policies pursued by most developing countries has led to the use...

Municipal Consolidation: Theoretical Inquiry and Case Study - City of Iron River, MI AgEcon
Martin, Joseph M..
The City of Iron River was created as a consolidated municipality in the upper peninsula of Michigan during the late 1990's. The consolidation consisted of two cities and one village with a combined 2000 census population of 3,391. Persistent population loss, combined with the decline of the economic base, reduced the viability of the individual municipal governments, placing consolidation at the forefront of options. The analysis of small, rural municipalities is outside the focus of most consolidation studies, however, the theoretical considerations examined in this study apply to all consolidation questions. These questions revolve around theories of local government organization and size; addressing key points including, economies of scale, size,...

INSTITUTIONAL DIFFERENCES IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AND THEIR CONSEQUENCES ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY BETWEEN THE U.S.A. AND JAPAN AgEcon
Sakurai, Takeshi.
Biotechnology, especially genetic engineering, is a revolutionary tool in life-science research. When it came, people thought it would have the greatest impact both on pharmaceutical and agriculture industries, because both are directly based on knowledge of life-science. As a matter of fact, a lot of knowledge of life at molecular level has been produced using the technology and it is giving big impacts to various industries. With respect to agriculture, to accumulate knowledge on plant physiology at the molecular level is important not just for plant genetic engineering, but to develop a future agricultural system that will be sustainable, environmentally safe and/or productive enough to satisfy expanding global population. Though the benefit is...

HISTORY, ORGANIZATION AND STRATEGIES FOR GRAIN PRODUCERS AND THE GRAIN INDUSTRY IN MICHIGAN AgEcon
Thrush, Alan J..
The grain system (grain producers and the grain industry) in Michigan finds itself in a transition period. Production (yield) and price limitations along with escalating cost factors have left producers in a situation where, without government assistance, many more would have to exit the farm. The grain industry (in this study, the industry refers to the grain handlers and processors), while in a stronger financial situation than producers, would suffer negatively if volume of grains bought and sold through their facilities decreased, and more in the industry would have to exit. A transition is needed to increase profitability of grain producers and the grain handlers and processors in Michigan. Without a transition, the trend of decreasing farms and...

Integration of Agricultural Information Resources in Western China AgEcon
Zhou, Lei; Wen, Shuping.
The essence and significance of integrating agricultural information resources in western China were summarized. The integration methods were introduced from the following four aspects: agricultural information infrastructure, database, collaborative management and service application. The integration technologies were discussed, the core of which lies in integrating distributed application via software and realizing the trans-departmental and trans-system exchange and share of information through controlling information. Based on the introduction of several frequently-used intelligence terminals, the approaches of realizing the transmission of agricultural information resources in western China were analyzed. And the integration measures were put forward...

Effects of Information and Country of Origin On Chinese Consumer Preferences for Wine: An Experimental Approach in the Field AgEcon
Wang, Hainan; McCluskey, Jill J..
Wine is a product whose value largely depends on the reputation associated with its region of production. China is a newcomer and latecomer to wine production and consumption. Wine consumption, especially imported wine, rarely exists outside of major urban areas. Therefore, understanding the Chinese local markets and consumer preference for wine products is important for foreign wine producers. WTP (Willingness-to-Pay), in economics, is the maximum amount a person would be willing to pay for a good, which is a useful tool to address consumers’ preference. In our study, we investigate the effects of information and origin of production on Chinese consumers’ WTP for wine. By using a second-price sealed-bid auction mechanism, which was first developed by...

CHANGING FORCES AFFECTING RURAL COMMUNITIES IN THE 1980'S AND POLICIES TO HELP DEAL WITH THOSE FORCES AgEcon
Peltola, Asko Antero.
The number of farms in industrialized countries has been declining continuously over the last few decades. The transition from an agrarian to an industrial society is a complex process involving many consequences to the economy as a whole and particularly to rural regions and communities. The industrial countries have tried to cushion the adjustment process, mostly by using agricultural policy tools, but they have proved to be incapable of preserving the viability of rural areas and recognizing their increasing diversity. In the U.S., the 1980s reversed the favorable rural growth trends of the seventies. The nonmetro population growth slowed and the traditional sectors of rural areas suffered from unfavorable trade conditions and from the recession of...

Comparative Analysis on the Effects of Income Structure on Consumption Level of Rural Residents in Eastern and Western China: A Case Study on Jiangsu and Xinjiang Provinces AgEcon
Ge, Fei; Huang, Jing; Mu, Yueying.
Taking Jiangsu and Xinjiang Provinces in China as examples, this paper analyzes the differences of income level, income structure and consumption level between eastern and western China. Since the reform and opening up, income of rural residents in eastern China has been much higher than that in western China. Income gap between eastern and western rural residents is increasing over time. Rural per capita net income in eastern area is mainly the net income from household management and the wage income. However, rural per capita net income in western area is relatively single, mainly the net income from household management. Living consumption of eastern rural residents is higher than the western rural residents and the gap is gradually widening. Four...

PHILIPPINE COCONUT INDUSTRY AND THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE AgEcon
Oniki, Shunji.
This study explores effects of Philippines' coconut policies on the performance in the international market. Analysis of the coconut sector found that the Philippine government successfully changed the structure of the coconut industry during the 1970's using a fund collected as coconut levies. Since the Philippines dominated the international trade market of coconut products, it could exercise dominant market power in the world trade, by integrating the domestic sector. However, the industrial policies were not effective. Results of an econometric analysis show that the Philippines did not gain the market power despite the heavy investment in the coconut sector. Due to technological development in the oil processing sector, other oil products became...

EFFECT OF CREDIT ON HOUSEHOLD WELFARE: THE CASE OF “VILLAGE BANK” MODEL IN BOMET DISTRICT, KENYA AgEcon
Langat, Jackson Kipngetich.
In recent years, governmental and nongovernmental organizations in many low-income countries have introduced credit programs targeted to the poor. Many of these programs specifically target the poor on the premise that they are more likely to be credit constrained and have restricted access to the wage labour market. Though participation is by choice, little is known about the role of credit on welfare. The purpose of this study was then to assess the role of credit service on welfare of the microfinance clients. It was also to enable the microfinance institutions assess if they are achieving the intended objectives of their program. The study area was Bomet District and the sample was drawn from Mulot and Silibwet “village banks”. A sample of 125 “village...

A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF AGRICULTURAL MARKETING CHARACTERISTICS OF FARMERS IN THE EASTERN REGION OF UPPER VOLTA AgEcon
Ouedraogo, Ismael S..
This paper aims at deepening and understanding of the agricultural marketing characteristics of farmers in the Eastern region of Upper Volta, West Africa. This work was requested by the Eastern Regional Development Organization (ORD) of the Voltaic government and the local U.S. AID Mission to provide some early guidepoints in the preparation of proposals for a major multi-donor integrated rural development project. The paper analyzes, at the farmer's level, utilization of crops, sales of purchases of crops and animals, other marketing transactions of farmers (trading in crops, processing of crops, gathering of fruit and nuts), and farmer's level of participation in the marketing system.
