| Their reproduction period, early stages and biology are known through previous works (cf. especially the works by L. Bianco (1), R. S. Clark (2), Ehrenbaum (3), etc.). On the contrary, their growth and longevity, their age and size when reaching their first sexual maturity, the variation of the number of their vertebrae, are, to our knowledge, not or hardly known. We aimed to fill this gap, at least partially, with this work. Concurrently, we made an inventory of the North Atlantic stock over the winter 1932-1933. |

| The various authors who studied the biology of the sardine in the Bay of Biscay are not very clear when dealing with its egg-laying, especially as far as the sardine from the North of the Bay and from the southern coast of Brittany is concerned. Since 1926, some observations [...] enabled us [...] to notice that even if the sardine reproduces on the Breton coast, its eggs are very rarely seen and in small quantities (the positive stations of the "Estafette" end of May 1928 and of the "Petrel", July 1929, provided some eggs identified as sardine eggs) in the coastal area (the area covered by our observations) cruised by sardine fishermen, during the drift-net sardine fishing period (April-June) but also the cod-roe fishing period (June to October). |

| The Lisbon Commission had decided, in 1930, that the laboratory of the Marine Fisheries Scientific and Technical Office of Lorient will take part in the study of the sardine on the French Atlantic coast. Following are the results obtained in 1932 on the sardine caught with salted cod-roe. This work is the continuation of those published in this journal by J. Le Gall (1) for the coasts of Brittany and of the English Channel, and by G. Belloc (2) for the area located between the Loire and the Gironde rivers. Our studied area stretches from the mouth of the Loire, to the South, to the city of Concarneau, to the North. |

| La disparition du Merlu des lieux de pêche un peu trop uniquement travaillés par nos chalutiers côtiers les a fait descendre vers le Sud pour le retrouver, et ils ont été amenés peu à peu à fréquenter des parages de plus en plus lointains, non seulement les rivages marocains, mais la Mauritanie, non sans difficulté d'ailleurs, car même avec l'adjonction d'un petit moteur destiné à maintenir leur cale au voisinage de O°, la quantité de glace qu'ils sont susceptibles d'embarquer au départ devient insuffisante pour assurer une conservation même douteuse, dès que le poisson commence à s'accumuler à bord. | Author from the last century: Day (1884), Cunningham (896) limit the hake's geographic distribution area (Merlucius merlilccius L.) to Madeira, in the South. Their point of view is based on the rarity, more apparent than real, of the hake in the Madeiran waters, where only fishermen catch it, even in these days, with a line, and at depths of 200 to 444 fathoms. Couch (1866) writes that this fish is greatly appreciated in the Cape of Good Hope, but he probably confused the European hake with the Cape hake (Merlucius capensis, Guichenot) that we described in our monographic study.
