The scallop Chlamys varia L. is a common shellfish of the Atlantic coast, a little rarer in the English Channel. It forms large banks in the roadstead of Brest and in the area of La Rochelle, along the north-eastern coast of the Isle of Ré, as well as between the Isle of Oléron and the continent. Some very depopulated banks can still be found in the Arcachon Bay and in some parts of the Mediterranean coast.Near La Rochelle, scallops are fished by boats using drags with an opening of 1 m and a round leading edge. It is limited to two hours per day from November to March, in order to protect the stocks. Sixty to eighty small motor boats or sardine boats take part in this fishery, catching around 800 tonnes per year, that is to say half the production of the... |

These first results might clarify some problems linked to the biology of tarets and other small lignivorous crustaceans. The systematic of the molluscs Teredinidae, so complex, is only based on the study of pallets, which is a great source of confusion when one has to examine the woods after the molluscs' death. We tried to distinguish the species by examining the striates and denticulations on the shelves. The size of the intervals between the striates and the proportional size of the denticulations, as well as the shape of the denticulation marks of the middle part, can indeed allow us to differentiate between some species. Large quantities of clams (Venus mercenaria L.) from the U.S.A. have been introduced in Brittany since 1930. Stopped in 1940, their importation started again in 1954. These shellfishes, designed to be immediately sold for eating, only stayed for a short period of time in the ponds and farms of the Belon, Pénerf and Etel rivers, or in the Gulf of Morbihan, where they were stocked. However, some individuals managed to escape the fisheries and stayed buried for years where they had been sown. Lambert (1949) reported how some twenty year-old clams were found on a farm on the Etel River. In some ponds of the Gulf of Morbihan and the Pénerf river, one can still find clams which have been stocked there before 1940: their size is huge and reaches 10 to 14 cm, and... |

The diet of lamellibranches is one of the main issues raised by oyster culture. Numerous scientists tackled this problem from different points of view: elements from the stomachal content at different times of the year, ingestion mechanisms, influence of hydrological factors on the ciliary activity, and provided some interesting results though often contradictory, at least from the outside. This preliminary study aims to demonstrate:l. - The part of phytoplankton in the stomachal contents of Portuguese oysters (examinations based on the autumn and winter months because of their richness in diatoms and mostly because of the dominance of these latter on the animal elements found in the plankton),2. - The difference in the diet caused by the raising of the... |

From February 22nd to April 2nd, 1956, we studied tuna fishing with live bait, as practiced by "tuna-clippers" from the Californian harbour of San Diego. This fishing deals only with two species: the albacore, "yellowfin Tuna" (Neothunnus macropterus) and the skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis); little tunnies, "black skipjacks" (Euthynnus alleteratus), can also be found, either within an albacore or skipjack shoal, or by themselves. When these fishes are caught, they are either thrown overboard or used as bait (fig, 1). The lower limit weights for these two commercial species are respectively 3.400 kg for albacores and 1.800 kg for skipjacks. Yellowfin tuna can reach weights of up to 180 kg; but these catches are pretty unusual and the average weight is 13 to... |

From September 22nd to December 19th, 1955, five research agencies collaborated in the study of Pacific, Central and Eastern waters. The vessel "Hugh M, Smith" belonging to the "Pacific Oceanic Fishery Investigation", recorded physical, chemical and biological information on the area crossed by the Equatorial current between longitudes 158° W and 105° W. A unit of the Peruvian fleet gathered information on the northern boundary of the Humbolt current, next to Ecuador. Two vessels from the "Scripps Institution of Oceanography" (University of California), the "Spencer F. Baird" and the "Horizon", focused on the area located between meridian 125° W and the American continent. The "Scofield" of the Fish and Game of California later joined the fleet. |

In a note addressed to the Academy of Sciences, Galaine and Houlbert (29) underlined the importance of the reefs built by the Hermelles (Sabellaria alveolata) in the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel. Looking at a summary of the history of these buildings, we learn that, as early as 1832, Audoin and Milne-Edwards knew, "on the shores of the Mont Saint-Michel and northeast of the Pas-aux-Boeufs, sand banks or islets" made of Hermelles tubes (uncovering at low tide and of a height of around 8 to 10 feet). Galaine and Houlbert saw in these reefs one of the causes of the silting of the Bay, and of the changing of the Couesnon bed since 1790. In their opinion, these reefs had grown from 8 to 10 feet in 1823, to 5 to 6 metres (15 to 18 feet) in 1916. [...] |

The Ebridians, marine planktonic flagellates with an internal siliceous skeleton, used to be very numerous in the Tertiary era but are only represented nowadays by two genera: "Ebria" Borgert (1891) and "Hermesinum" Zacharias (1906). Found successively in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the northern Pacific Ocean, the northern and southern Atlantic Ocean, they had never been observed in tropical seas. Consequently, they were considered as cold or temperate water organisms. Their presence on the western African coast, at latitude 4° 48' S, in addition to extending their distribution area, seems to invalidate this point of view. Without drawing any hasty conclusion, it seemed interesting to recall their appearance in the Bay of... |

Between latitudes 45°30' (Canso) and 52° (Belle-Isle) is a large depression in which recent glacial modelling left visible marks everywhere, in the runnels of the valley, in the rock bars and frontal moraines, in the deposits of the lateral moraine boulders. These marks sometimes make it difficult to approach the docks in which the small coastal villages used to unload the boats that used to sail back and forth to Quebec City for communication purposes and now transport pulpwood. |
