Profiling Agricultural Engineering Technologies for Mechanizing Smallholder Agriculture in Uganda CIGR Journal
Wanyama, Joshua.
Developing countries are grappling with numerous challenges including feeding rapidly growing populations, alleviating poverty, protecting the environment and mitigating adverse impacts of climate change. For the coming years, one of the main agricultural development agenda for Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) should be to increase agricultural productivity and production to achieve food security through agricultural mechanization with Agricultural Engineering Technologies (AETs) as major inputs. However, there is paucity of information on the status of existing AETs and their contribution to mechanizing smallholder agriculture which is crucial to effective planning and strategy formulation....

Agricultural Engineering Profession; The Perspective of Employers of Labour in Ilorin, Nigeria CIGR Journal
Oyebode, Oyetayo Olukorede; Ogunlela, Ayodele Olarewaju.
An appraisal was carried out on the level of awareness of the Agricultural Engineering profession by employers of labour in Ilorin, Nigeria, to evaluate who they (employers of labour) think an Agricultural Engineer is, how relevant they think he is to their organizations and how well they have been able to make use of his (Agricultural Engineer’s) expertise in their respective organizations. This was done using structured questionnaires and personal communication. The questionnaires were distributed to the target groups and persons (these include Research Institutes, Production and Manufacturing Industries, Government Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals). The results showed that 79.8% of...

Animal Housing is a multidisciplinary scientific area that requires the establishment and use of a standardized vocabulary that provides consistency and reduces misunderstandings among scientists with diverse background or Nationality. A first report-dictionary entitled ‘Glossary of Terms on Animal Housing: Basic Engineering, Physical and Physiological Definitions’ has been prepared within the framework of Working Group ‘Animal Housing in Hot Climate’ established under CIGR - Section II. The glossary makes reference to Engineering, Thermal Biology and Environmental Physiology disciplines and it aims at (1) setting-up uniformity in Animal Housing terms pertaining to climatization field of study and to (2) serve as a focal point for the development of...

Indirect water demand of dairy farm buildings CIGR Journal
Kordula Doering; Leibniz-Institute for Agricultural Engineering; Simone Kraatz; Leibniz-Institute for Agricultural Engineering; Annette Prochnow; Leibniz-Institute for Agricultural Engineering; Katrin Drastig; Leibniz-Institute for Agricultural Engineering.
Water is needed in agriculture not only to ensure plant growth and to feed livestock, but also indirectly in pre-chains to produce machines, equipment, buildings and operating materials.  This water is referred to as indirect water.  The focus of this article is on the indirect water demand for farm buildings in milk production, which was assessed for the first time.  Four standardized barn types for dairy cows, a young cattle barn, a calf barn, and storage facilities were investigated.  The materials and masses of each building type and equipment were determined.  The water needed in the process of material production was taken from the Ecoinvent database.  The indirect water demand for livestock houses ranges from 1.4 to 1.9 m³ animal place-1 yr-1 and...

Kinematics of twin rotary tiller CIGR Journal
Belov, Mikhail Ivanovich.
Kinematics of twin rotary tiller with a big front rotor was investigated. This tiller contains two rotors with horizontal axes one behind another. The twin rotary tiller with L-shaped blades can be used for heavy loamy soil handle. The rear rotor is designed to handle upper soil layer. Theoretical methods and computer model were used to calculate the radius of the rear rotor, the position of the rotor above land surface, rotational rotor speed, tractor forward speed at desired sizes of slice pierсe in the upper layer of soil and at given number of blades on one side of a flange.

Classification of papaya crispiness based on mechanical properties CIGR Journal
Terdwongworakul, Anupun.
This research investigated an objective technique for the classification of papaya varieties based on crispiness. Five varieties of papaya were sampled with variation in crispiness. The papaya samples were mechanically tested using texture profile analysis and rectangular blade cutting methods. Discriminant analysis based on the mechanical properties measured using rectangular blade cutting was performed to develop a classification model. The obtained discriminant model was capable of classifying the papaya samples into five different groups with an accuracy of 82.4%.

Mathematical modelling of the performance of an impact snake gourd (Trichosanthes cucumerina. L) seed sheller CIGR Journal
Idowu, David Oluwafemi; Owolarafe, Oseni Kehinde.
A mathematical model for the prediction of shelling efficiency of an impact snake gourd seed decorticator was presented using dimension analysis based on the Buckingham’s pi theorem.  Experimental verification of the models was conducted comparing the theoretical predictions with estimates from the representation of conventional methods.  A high coefficient of determination was found between the predicted and the experimental value (98.45% for effect of moisture content on decortication efficiency; 99.69% for effect of hammer diameter on decortications efficiency and 97.35% for effect of hammer speed on the decortications efficiency) showing that the model is appropriate.

Leuven, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Leuven, Belgium..
Naturally ventilated barns have the advantage of providing an energy-efficient and low-noise micro-environment for animals.  Such barns are very common, especially for cattle, which are a major source of ammonia and methane emissions as well as other airborne pollutants. Emission fluxes are calculated as the product of the ventilation rate (VR) and the gas concentration.  The VR of naturally ventilated barns are directly influenced by atmospheric conditions.  Therefore, the estimation of VR involves high uncertainties; furthermore, there is no reference method for VR estimation.  For these reasons, three different methods were investigated to estimate VR through naturally ventilated dairy barns: (1) the tracer gas...

M, Esther Magdalene Sharon; EP, Banuu Priya; CV, Kavitha Abirami; K, Alagusundaram.
A comprehensive review of the fundamental theories governing the drying process is presented. The development of models of drying of agricultural products for thin layer and deep bed drying are discussed. The factors affecting drying and the biochemical changes which happen during drying are listed. Importance of moisture diffusion and activation energy consumption for modeling and optimizing the drying processes are highlighted.
