A survey investigating the knowledge and perception of biotechnology by high school students living in the rural Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, was undertaken. Data relating to the student’ preferred and trusted information sources was also gathered. This study has demonstrated that at least two-thirds of students had a good knowledge of medical biotechnology issues, however, a significant proportion of the students did have concerns about the use and/or safety of biotechnology. Trust in Scientists and Food Manufacturers: Implications for the Public Support of Biotechnology AgEcon

An analysis of data from the U.S. Biotechnology Study, 1997S1998 reveals that few variables affect public trust in scientists, while variables representing perceived benefits, risks, trustworthiness, and competence affect trust in food manufacturers on matters of biotechnology. Both trust in scientists and trust in food manufacturers have a large and important effect on public support for biotechnology, although trust in scientists is found to be more important than trust in food manufacturers. Findings of this analysis suggest that trust in scientists is relatively generalized, while trust in food manufacturers is particularized.

Discrepancies in the attitude between US and UK consumers toward application of biotechnology in crop production and medicine were examined using data from mail and online surveys. Results showed that more than 31% (46%) of US (UK) respondents were opposed to biotech foods while only 16% (18%) opposed biotech medicine, respectively.
