Hydrodynamics of the north brittany coast - a synoptic study ArchiMer
Garreau, Pierre.
The tidal hydrodynamics of the northern coast of Brittany is determined by numerical modelling. Long term transportation and mixing are considered for the whole zone. To define areas sensitive to eutrophication (from the hydrodynamic point of view) physical criteria are discussed. An application is carried out for the bay of Lannion and the bay of Saint-Brieuc.

VACUMM - A Python Library for Ocean Science ArchiMer
Raynaud, Stephane; Charria, Guillaume; Wilkins, Jonathan; Garnier, Valerie; Garreau, Pierre; Theetten, Sebastien.
VACUMM is an open-source Python library for processing data from observations and numerical models. The library is now used for several years in research and operational contexts, for instance for producing fi gures and reports, validating models, converting data, or making simple or advanced diagnostics. In this paper, we introduce how the library is built, and we present two applications of its use: one in an operational context and one in a research context.

Garnier, Valerie; Pairaud, Ivane; Nicolle, Amandine; Alekseenko, Elena; Baklouti, Melika; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Lecornu, Fabrice; Garreau, Pierre.
IFREMER has encouraged for over 15 years the oceanographic modeling of sea waters all around the metropolitan French coasts in order to facilitate environmental coastal studies. In that context, the North-Western Mediterranean Sea confi guration (MENOR: 1.2 km – 60 vertical levels) has been introduced in the framework of Previmer operational forecasting system (http://www.previmer.org/en). This article gives an insight into the operational applications and scientific research using this MENOR configuration.

Multi-resolution eddy detection from ocean color and Sea Surface Temperature images ArchiMer
Karoui, Imen; Chauris, Hervé; Garreau, Pierre; Craneguy, Philippe.
We propose a multi resolution method for automatic detection of eddies on both simulated and satellite Sea Surface Temperature (SST) or ocean color images. Our approach consists in a curvelet based analysis of image fronts along circles with specified radius values. The main interests of the proposed method are: It is carried out on image gradient, and is thus not sensitive to the choice of binarization threshold; With the multi-resolution aspect and the anisotropic spatial support shape of curvelet elements, we can deal with no perfectly circular eddies (curvelet width) and we also take into account the image regularity to distinguish between real eddies and noise (curvelet length). We have tested the method on several modeled and satellite images in the...

Regional assessment of altimetry products in the NW Med : Comparison to in-situ data and model outputs ArchiMer
Dussurget, Renaud; Pairaud, Ivane; Dufau, Claire; Charria, Guillaume; Garreau, Pierre; Garnier, Valerie.
In this preliminary study, we investigate the characteristics of a standard regional NRT product & an experimental L3 coastal sea-level product from PISTACH data, and assess their combined use with in-situ data (drifters) and a regional model. The results suggest that: •J2 NRT data shows some consistent behaviour with drifter data, despite biases •RED3 retracking : better coastal coverage (>5%) •NORMED model has an excess of energy at the mesoscales, possibly arising from the lack of energy dissipation towards the finer scales

Mesoscale and Sub-Mesoscale structures observed during High resolution surveys in Western Mediterranean Basin ArchiMer
Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Louazel, Stephanie; Correard, Stephanie.
The Mediterranean Sea is often referred as a “pocket ocean” exhibiting many processes that are primary interest the global ocean circulation given the opportunity to investigate a large panel of oceanic features in a relatively restrained area. Recent field experiments based on the multi-plateform integrated monitoring MOOSE or on intensive targeted experiment HYMEX revisited the hydrology and the dynamics of the Western Basin. Such approaches emphasized the ubiquity of the fine scale dynamics in the Mediterranean dynamics. An overview of the observed processes during 5 recent fields experiments are  presented and discussed regarding meso- and submeso-scale processes.

Wave- and current-induced bottom shear stress distribution in the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois; Garreau, Pierre; Le Hir, Pierre; Forget, P.
Simulations of both currents and waves were performed throughout the year 2001 to assess the relative contribution of each to their overall erosive potential on the Gulf of Lions shelf. Statistical analysis of bottom shear stress (BSS) was compared to sediment grain-size distribution on the bottom. The hydrodynamic features of the bottom layer coincide with the distribution of surficial sediments, and three areas with different hydro-sedimentary characteristics were revealed. (i) The sandy inner shelf ( < 30 m) area is a high-energy-wave dominated area but may be subjected to intense current-induced BSS during on-shore winds along the coast and during continental winds mainly in the up-welling cells. (ii) The middle shelf (30-100 m) is a low-energy...

Assessing climate change impacts on marine biodiversity conservation: The case study of mass mortality events in the NW Mediterranean basin ArchiMer

The Mediterranean is considered a biodiversity hot‐spot. The Mediterranean represents less than 1% of global ocean surface, but it hosts about 20% of marine biodiversity with a high level of endemic species. The Mediterranean is also considered a hot‐spot for climate change with expected warming over the average along with a very likely increase in the occurrence of heat waves in climate change. In fact Mediterranean waters have been already significantly warming up during the last decades, and this trend is expected to increase during the rest of the 21st century. Mediterranean marine ecosystems are already displaying clear responses to warming such as pelagic productivity, shifts in species’ geographical distributions, modifications of migratory patterns...

Identification de « paysages hydrologiques » dans les eaux marines sous juridiction française (France métropolitaine) ArchiMer
Gailhard-rocher, Isabelle; Huret, Martin; Lazure, Pascal; Vandermeirsch, Frederic; Gatti, Julie; Garreau, Pierre; Gohin, Francis.

Modeling of PCB trophic transfer in the Gulf of Lions; 3D coupled model application ArchiMer
Alekseenko, Elena; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Tronczynski, Jacek; Carlotti, F.; Garreau, Pierre; Tixier, Celine; Baklouti, Melika.
3D coupled modeling approach is used for the PCB dispersion assessment in the Gulf of Lion and its transfer to zooplankton via biogeochemical processes. PCB budgets and fluxes between the different species of PCB: dissolved, particulate, biosorbed on plankton, assimilated by zooplankton, which are governed by different processes: adsorption/desorption, bacteria and plankton mortality, zooplankton excretion, grazing, mineralization, volatilization have been estimated. Model outputs were compared with the available in situ data. It was found that the Rhone River outflows play an important role in the organism contamination in the coastal zone, whereas the atmospheric depositions are rather more important in the offshore zones. The transfer of the available...

Contraintes de fond dans le Golfe du Lion générées par les houles et les courants ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois; Garreau, Pierre; Le Hir, Pierre.
Simulated data of both currents and waves for the entire year 2001 are used in order to assess their statistical contribution to the erodability power over the shelf of the Gulf of Lion. Bottom circulation patterns are also analysed in response to wind forcing. A method to compute the skin friction component of the total bottom shear stress is then proposed and compared with a classical method.
