Traditional Maize Storage Systems and Staple-Food Security in Ghana AgEcon
Armah, Paul W.; Asante, Felix A..
Ghana is self-sufficient in the production of maize, the major staple food for many low-income Ghanaians, yet staple maize-availability projections in Ghana do not include insecurity problems in the post-harvest season caused by poor storage, distribution difficulties, and high prices. This study uses the concept of food "security-storage" relationships or an "availability-gap" to refer to the ability of poor Ghanaians to access stored maize in the post-harvest season. This estimated "availability-gap" measures available maize needed to raise food consumption of the poorest Ghanaians to the minimum nutritional requirement...

COMPETITIVE ABILITY OF MAIZE IN MIXTURE WITH CLIMBING BEAN IN ORGANIC FARMING Organic Eprints
Bavec, Franc; Živec, Urška; Grobelnik Mlakar, Silva; Bavec, Martina; Radics, Laszlo.
Intercropped crops represent an important production system in organic farming, especially maize/climbing bean mixture due to its high content of protein in bean seeds for human diet, and producing silage for ruminants. To test this hypothesis, the effects of maize (Zea mays L.) sown as a sole crop and maize/climbing bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Cipro) mixtures on maize plant height, maize leaf area index, bean leaf area index and grain yield were investigated in field experiments on an organic farm following accepted rules of certification. Organic maize Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Anken, Thomas; Hiltbrunner, Jürg; Kessler, Willy; Mayer, Jochen; Strasser, Fredi; Schmutz, Res.
Maize cultivation provides a valuable addition to the feed ration in farms with dairy cows. However, the cultivation of organic maize is challenging and posing risks regarding erosion, leaching of nutrients and soil compaction. Not all sites are suitable for maize cultivation. Therefore, it is important to first study the site before the cultivation. This leaflet provides some general information on how to cultivate organic maize optimally. Different topics about the needs of maize, the sowing, the right crop rotation and pest management are covered. Finally, there is also some...

Demand for Maize Hybrids, Seed Subsidies, and Seed Decisionmakers in Zambia. AgEcon
Smale, Melinda; Mason, Nicole M..
The successful development and diffusion of improved maize seed in Zambia during the 1970s–80s was a major achievement of African agriculture but was predicated on a government commitment to parastatal grain and seed marketing, the provision of services to maize growers, and a pan-territorial pricing scheme that was fiscally unsustainable. Declining maize output when this system was dismantled contributed to the reinstatement in 2002 of subsidies for maize seed and fertilizer through the Fertilizer and Farmer Input Support Programs (FISP). In the meantime, seed liberalization has led to an array of new, improved

Thailand's Maize Export Agreement Policy: An Economic Analysis AgEcon
Konjing, Chaiwat.
This study is an evaluation of Thailand's maize export agreement policy through economic analyses of prices and markets for Thai maize. Maize export agreements between Thailand and Japan since 1966 and recently Taiwan has played an important role to the overall development of Thai maize. These agreements feature two important policy elements, (a) an export quota and (b) a fixed export price. Some disagreements now exist, however, as to whether these export agreements are more or less desirable for Thailand than free trade. Statistical analyses of the wholesale-export price linkages of

Weed Control in Maize with Gliricidia Intercropping Planta Daninha
Tavella,L.B.; Silva,P.S.L.; Monteiro,A.L.; Oliveira,V.R.; Siqueira,P.L.O.F..
One of the very important components in the organic maize production costs refers to spending on weed control. In this research were assessed the effects of maize hybrids (AG 1051 and BR 205) in an intercropping with Gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) and mechanical hoeing on weed control. The treatments assessed were: A - maize monocropping + two hoeings (20 and 40 days after sowing); B - maize with one hoeing at 20 days + intercropping with gliricidia sowed after hoeing; C - maize sowing intercropped with gliricidia at the time of maize sowing + hoeing at 40...

Long-Run Relationship of U.S. and Argentine Maize Prices AgEcon
Ghoshray, Atanu.
This paper examines the relationship between the maize export prices of the United States and Argentina. The results suggest an asymmetric nature of price adjustment. This could be due to the fact that the maize market is characterized by significant concentration. The larger market share of exports by the United States reflects the influences on export price dynamics. The structure of maize trade is such that U.S. markets are largely insulated from influences flowing from Argentina, while Argentine maize prices are not insulated from U.S. influences.

The impact of food aid on maize prices and production in Swaziland AgEcon
Mabuza, Majola Lawrence; Hendriks, Sheryl L.; Ortmann, Gerald F.; Sithole, M.M..
The objective of the study was to provide empirical evidence on whether food aid leads to depressed domestic maize prices and reduced maize production in subsequent years in Swaziland. The lack of empirical evidence has often resulted in premature negative conclusions about the impact of food aid on Swaziland’s maize industry. The study used secondary national data from 1985 to 2006. Variables used in the statistical analysis included quantity of cereal food aid; quantity of commercial maize imports; quantity of locally produced maize; official maize...

Farmer Preferences for Milpa Diversity and Genetically Modified Maize in Mexico: A Latent Class Approach AgEcon
Birol, Ekin; Villalba, Eric Rayn; Smale, Melinda.
Maize, the second most globally important staple crop after wheat, originated in Mexico, where it is typically grown as part of a set of associated crops and practices called the milpa system. This ancient mode of production is practiced today in ways that vary by cultural context and agro-environment. Milpas generate private economic value, in terms of food security, diet quality and livelihoods, for the two-million farm households who manage them. Furthermore, milpas generate public economic value by conserving agrobiodiversity, especially that of maize landraces, which have the potential to contribute unique traits needed by plant breeders for future crop improvement. In this way,...

Coping with ex ante Regulations and ex post Liability Rules for Planting Bt-maize – The Portuguese Experience AgEcon
Skevas, Theodoros; Fevereiro, P.; Wesseler, Justus.
This study investigates the attitude and practices of GM and non-GM maize farmers in Portugal. Thirty seven GM maize farmers were interviewed representing 22.5% of the total number of GM maize notifications in the country. Additionally, 66 non-GM maize farmers were surveyed in an attempt to investigate their opinion on the Bt technology, its viability and its future. The most interesting finding is that almost half of all the surveyed maize farmers (GM and non-GM) stated that the ex ante regulations are rigid and difficult to apply. On the contrary, the ex post tort liability rules are...

The Effects of the Food Reserve Agency on Maize Market Prices in Zambia AgEcon
Mason, Nicole M.; Myers, Robert J..
This policy synthesis estimates the effects of the Zambia Food Reserve Agency’s (FRA) activities on maize market prices in the country. The FRA, a government parastatal strategic food reserve/maize marketing board, buys maize at a pan-territorial price that typically exceeds wholesale market prices in major maize producing areas. It then exports the maize or sells it domestically at prices determined by tender, at auction, or administratively. In deficit production years, the Agency often imports maize and sells it to select large-scale millers at...

Effects of Government Maize Marketing and Trade Policies on Maize Market Prices in Kenya AgEcon
Jayne, Thomas S.; Meyers, Robert J.; Nyoro, James K..
The objectives of this paper are to determine the effects of NCPB maize trading activity and the maize import tariff on wholesale maize market price levels and volatility. The analysis uses monthly maize price and trade data covering the period January 1990 to September 2004. Results are based on a vector autoregression (VAR) approach that allows estimation of a counterfactual set of maize prices that would have occurred over the 1990-2004 period had the NCPB not existed and trade restrictions been removed. Assessed are the separate impacts of policy on wholesale prices in Kitale, a major...

AGRONOMIC PERFORMANCE AND PHOTOSYNTHETICALLY ACTIVE RADIATION INTERCEPTED BY MAIZE INTERCROPPED WITH BRACHIARIA 196
Makino, Priscila Akemi; Ceccon, Gessi; Ribeiro, Luan Marlon; Ceccon, Felipe.
Maize and soybean are the main crops used for crop yield on Brazilian Cerrado biome. The off-season maize intercropped with ruzigrass [Urochloa ruziziensis (R. Germ. & C.M. Evrard) Crins (Syn. Brachiaria ruziziensis Germ. & Evrard)] increases soil cover and yield for crops in succession. However, the benefits on maize yield depend on the distribution and radiation-use efficiency (RUE) and its conversion to biomass. This study aimed to evaluate maize and ruzigrass yield in different cultivation systems. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Agropecuária Oeste, in Dourados, MS, Brazil. The experiment...

Co-existence in maize supply chains in Spain and Switzerland Organic Eprints
Oehen, Bernadette; Costa-Font, Montserrat; Morgner, Marion; Gil, José M.; Stolze, Matthias.
The debate about co-existence usually focuses on the situation of neighbouring farms. Organic producers take the position that co-existence affects the whole supply chain. Therefore, this paper compares the maize grain supply chains in Switzerland and Spain in order to identify which factors influence the segregation of genetically modified (GM) maize from non-GM maize, and discusses how organic production copes with the challenge of GM maize. Considerable differences exist between Spain and Switzerland with regard to grain maize as a component of animal feed. In Spain, where GM
