Results of the quantitative processing of 530 bathymetric samples are analysed. The sampling was performed in summer, autumn and winter seasons at 70 stations arranged over the whole water area of the Red Sea and adjacent part of the Gulf of Aden. Average of the phytoplankton amount and biomass are presented for the mentioned seasons in the northern, central and southern parts of the sea with subdivision into the main taxonomic groups at different depths from 0 to 500-1000 m. Peculiarities of the phytoplankton distribution are considered interrelated with the hydrological structure of water masses. |

The results are presented concerning determinations of chlorophyll "a" content in plankton of the Black, Ionian, Sardinian seas and in the Atlantic in a 100 m layer and at standard depths. The material was collected in April-August, 1976 during the 30th cruise of the research ship "Mikhail Lomonosov". Determinations were carried out by spectrophotometric method in membrane filters. The average indices of chlorophyll for the 0-100 m layer varied from 0.07 to 0.08 mg/m^3 in the Sardinian sea, from 0.006 to 0.09 in a zone of convergences in the southern Atlantic, from 0.24 to 0.35 mg/m^3 in the productive upwelling zones. |

Data on composition and distribution of main groups of phytoplankton in the Mediterranean basin seas (the Black, Ionian, Sardinian seas) and in the Southern Atlantic were obtained on the basis of organisms calculations in the "living" drop. In a series of the studied seas the phytoplankton amount changed from 113.3 mill.cell/m^3, 315.5 mg/m^3 in the Black sea to 26.4 mill. cell/m^3, 14.4 mg/m^3 in the Sardinian sea. In the Atlantic Ocean region near the Straight of Gibraltar the number of phytoplankton cells was the same as in the Black sea and biomass amounted to 50 mg/m^3. In the tropical waters the phytoplankton amount was minimum ( about 10 mill. cell/m^3, 2-17 mg/m^3). In the south-western part of the southern circulation system the maximum (2500... |
