On the basis of data on oxygen uptake by mussels which were obtained in different seasons of 1975, the equations are calculated for dependence of metabolism on total, wet and dry mass of mollusks body for March, April, June, July and December at 20 deg.C and the animal habitat temperature in sea. The metabolism rate in mussels varies with seasons, reaching maximum values in the spring and late-autumn months. In summer the level of metabolism decreases, despite the high temperature of water in sea. The revealed seasonal character of mussel respiration is determined by the physiological state of the organism and to a less extent by the sea thermal regime. |
