In the S. droebachiensis ontogenesis the maximum-to-average rations values increase. This permits large animals to shorten the period of transition from the maximum ration to the average one and to keep the latter at a relatively constant level. The variations in the average daily rations are associated with the period of food digestion, therefore the digestion period may be measured without using the labelled food. Studies on the processes of accumulation and assimilation by Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis of the suspendable and soluble substrates of different chemical nature by the method of chamber analysis made it possible to find out significant peculiarities of these processes.
