The research on south-western Atlantic phytoplankton carried out in July-August of 1976 resulted in revealing the predominance of diatoms, dinoflagellates and yellow-green algae. The greatest species diversity is found in the Brazilian waters, maximum quantities and biomass are registered in transformed waters between the subtropical Brazilian and subantarctic Falkland waters and the Western wind-drift current. In the section along 42 grad 30 min S. L. between 52 grad and 59 grad W. L. the trophogenic layer in the Falkland waters as well as in the transformed waters spread down to a depth of about 50 m, in the Brazilian waters - down to 80-100 m. In the 43 grad 30 min W. Approximately 90 species and varieties of planktonic algae were found near the north-western of Africa in the period between late December 1972 and early January 1973. Diatoms from the Chaetoceros and Rhizosolenia genera prevailed. The highest number (about 100 mill. cells/m^3) and biomass (500 mg/m^3) were obtained near the African shelf. The bulk of the phytoplankton mass was concentrated in a 0-50 m layer.

Особенности пространственной структуры фитопланктона и его продукции в районах некоторых банок Юго-Восточной Атлантики IBSS Repository

По материалам 5-го рейса НИС «Профессор Водяницкий» (ноябрь 1978—апрель 1979 гг.) проанализировано распределение фитопланктона в субтропических водах района горы Вииа и субантарктических вод банки Дисковери. В субтропических водах средняя для района численность в трофогенном слое (0—75 м) изменялась в пределах 5,8—10 млн. кл/м3, биомасса — 18—28 мг/м3, первичная продукция составляла 75,8 мг С/(м2•сут). В субантарктических водах соответствующие величины колебались в диапазоне 16,7—36,8 млн. кл., 102,6—168,5 мг/м3 и продукция составляла 550 мг С/(м2•сут). В период наблюдений подъем вод, обусловленный топографией банок, практически не отражался на распределении фитопланктона. Data on composition and distribution of main groups of phytoplankton in the Mediterranean basin seas (the Black, Ionian, Sardinian seas) and in the Southern Atlantic were obtained on the basis of organisms calculations in the "living" drop. In a series of the studied seas the phytoplankton amount changed from 113.3 mill.cell/m^3, 315.5 mg/m^3 in the Black sea to 26.4 mill. cell/m^3, 14.4 mg/m^3 in the Sardinian sea. In the Atlantic Ocean region near the Straight of Gibraltar the number of phytoplankton cells was the same as in the Black sea and biomass amounted to 50 mg/m^3. Small Flagellata division rate is studied in experiments in-situ carried each month for two years. The portion of small Flagellata in the total amount and biomass of phytoplankton is determined. It is found that in some periods it may reach from 40 to 70-80% of the amount and above 20% of the biomass. Proceeding from the data on the division rate and on biomass, the diurnal production values are calculated which vary from 4 to 67 mgC/m^3 for a year and may account for 3 to 93% of total diurnal production of phytoplankton.
