The effects of patch quality on the foraging behaviour of an anthocorid predator Orius sauteri (Poppius) were compared between sexes. Prior experience in patches was also studied to determine whether this was a factor affecting oviposition decisions. Patch quality affected patch residence time differently for the two sexes; females stayed much longer in a patch with prey (60 Thrips palmi larvae) than a patch without prey, while males did not remain in any patch for extended periods. Most of the females remained in or moved to patches with prey, whereas males dispersed, irrespective of patch quality. Both females released in patches with prey and females released in patches without prey deposited more eggs per hour in patches with prey than in patches... |

We investigated effects of sucrose solution on Onus sauteni nymphal survival rates, adult longevity and fecundity in the absence of arthropod prey. When first instar and third instar nymphs were fed 30% sucrose solution, they lived longer and reached a later instar than those fed on distilled water. However, there were no significant differences in longevity and fecundity between adult females fed sucrose and those fed distilled water. Therefore, sucrose solution provides nutritional benefits to O. sauteri nymphs, but other materials (i.e. protein) may be necessary to increase adult performance. In agro-ecosystems, it is regarded that biological control using O. sauteri can be enhanced by application of sucrose solution as a food source. |

Effects of the prey species Thrips palmi and Tetranychus kanzawai and their stages on the development and reproduction of the anthocorid predator, Wollastoniella rotunda, were investigated under laboratory conditions. When offered first or second instar larvae of T. palmi, first instar nymphs of W. rotunda developed into second instars; however, when offered adult T.... |

We investigated effects of sugar solution on adult longevity, progeny production and progeny sex ratio of Aphidius ervi in the presence and absence of host aphids. When female parasitoids were provided with 50% glucose–fructose solution in 1 : 1 ratio, they lived approximately twice longer than those provided with distilled water, irrespective of host aphid provision. The same effect of sugar solution was also observed on progeny production. When the parasitoid was fed sugar solution, its lifetime progeny production approximately doubled in comparison to that provided with water, whereas daily progeny production did not differ. Total number of female progeny did not differ between adult female provided with water and sugar solution, but significantly... |

We studied the effects of plant species on the development of Wollastoniella rotunda under laboratory conditions. We reared newly emerged first instars of W. rotunda on eggs of Ephestia kuehniella together with one of four different plant leaves, eggplant, cucumber, kidney bean and tomato. As a control, we used either moist cotton wool or nothing instead of the plant leaves. In the absence of water, first instars died within a day, suggesting that the predator needs to acquire water from plants in order to survive. Survival rates of W. rotunda differed among plant species, being lowest on cucumber leaves when compared to eggplant or tomato leaves. The duration of instar development was not affected by plant species. When offered moist cotton wool, bugs... |

The avoidance responses of aphid parasitoids with varying host ranges (Aphidius eadyi, Aphidius ervi, and Praon volucre) to chemical trails deposited by intraguild predatory ladybirds, Coccinella septempunctata and Adalia bipunctata, were investigated. Females of all three parasitoid species avoided leaves previously visited by C. septempunctata or A. bipunctata adults. The avoidance responses shown by the two Aphidius species were stronger to trails of C. septempunctata than to those of A. bipunctata. However, P. volucre avoided trails of both ladybird species to a similar degree. Dose responses of these three parasitoid species to the hydrocarbons n-tricosane (C23H48), n-pentacosane (C25H52), and n-heptacosane (C27H56), which are components of the trails... |

The role of semiochemicals in mediating intraguild interactions between the seven-spot ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, and the aphid parasitoid, Aphidius ervi, was investigated. Female parasitoids avoided leaves visited by C. septempunctata adults and larvae during the previous 24 hr. Ethanol extracts of C. septempunctata adults and larvae also induced avoidance responses by A. ervi. Two of the hydrocarbons identified by gas chromatography ( GC) and coupled GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), n-tricosane (C23H48), and n-pentacosane (C25H52), when tested individually at levels found in the adult extract, induced avoidance by A. ervi. Further investigation of the larvae extract, and footprint chemicals deposited by adults in glass Petri dishes, confirmed the... |
