Over a seven year period from 1991 to 1997, 22 species of tiger beetles, representing nine genera, were recorded near Manaus, Brazil. In the Whitewaterfloodplains along the Rio Solimões-Amazonas (Ilha de Marchantaria), three diurnal species inhabit inundation forests and six species (two diurnal, four nocturnal) live in open areas. Data on their natural history and adaptation to living conditions in floodplains are presented. Fifteen species were located on non-flooded uplands (Reserva Florestal A. Ducke). Paulinia acuminata (Orthoptera: Pauliniidac) desenvolve todo seu ciclo vital em macrófitas aquáticas. Entre 17 macrófitas e 5 hortaliças testadas, a oviposição foi constatada somente em Salvinaceae (Salvinia auriculata, S. minima, S. sprucei, Azolla cf. microphylla e Araceae (Pistia stratiotes). O período médio de incubação, em laboratório, foi de 18,7 (+/- 1,8) dias, com uma média de 7,3 (+/- 2,8) ovos por postura. O desenvolvimento dos seis estádios ninfais durou 47,12 (+/-1,2) dias. O ciclo de vida completo, ovo-adulto, foi de 93,2 dias sob uma temperatura do ar em torno dc 29 °C. Observações etológicas de laboratório e de campo são apresentadas. |

The spatial and temporal distribution of a guild of eight diurnal tiger beetle species was studied on a 105 m long transect near the field station of the Reserva Florestal A. Ducke near Manaus (AM), Brazil. The transect followed a path that included both shaded and an open areas. Five of the species, restricted to primary forest, occurrred only in shaded areas of the transect, and three species occurred in open areas. Of all eight species only two of the open habitat species showed no clear seasonality in adult activity. In six species the activity of adults was limited to the rainy season. Canopies of the locally occurring Amazonian tree species Calophyllum brasiliense. Camb. (Guttiferae, height 10 m) were fogged after dawn on the same day at five adjacent localities in a 20-year-old plantation at the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve near Manaus/Brazil, using natural pyrethrum (0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%), Baythroid (0.3%) and diesel oil, respectively. The 1152 ants collected represented 52 species, 17 genera and five subfamilies. The highest number of ant species was obtained with the synthetic pyrethrum Baythroid 0.3% and with natural pyrethrum 1.5%. About 46% of the total ant species were only collected in the first hour after fogging, and 17% only during the second hour, after trees had been heavily shaken. É feita a determinação da quantidade média (g) de biomassa foliar consumida por 1 g (peso seco) de gafanhoto/dia nesta espécie. O material para a realização dos experimentos foi coletado na ilha de Marchantaria (várzea - Rio Solimões) perto de Manaus. Os animais testados foram agrupados por estádio ninfal (ninfas iniciais (I+II), médias (111+lV) e finais (V+VI)) e os adultos pelo sexo (machos, fêmeas, machos+fêmeas). A planta utilizada como alimento foi Paspalwn repens, macrófita aquática das Poaceac, onde Stenacrisf. fissicaudadesenvolve o seu ciclo vital.
