Elevage larvaire de pénéides en milieu tropical ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
With a view of utilizing to the maximum and raising separately the spawn of Peneid shrimps obtained from captive brood stock, the team of the Oceanographic Center of the Pacific of CNEXO adapted the technic of small volume, high density perfected by the Galveston laboratory to tropical conditions. The environmental conditions, particularly year-round high temperatures, allowed the development of a simple hatchery, demanding a minimum investment. The water, previously chlorinated, then deahlorinated, is only renewed from the mysis stage onward. Cylindrotheca and Tetraselmis algae produced separately are used for the zoea stage, rotifers for the mysis stage and Artemia nauplii for PI to PS at which point the post-larvae are stocked in ponds. The 100 P/liter...

Intensive larval rearing of Macrobrachium rosenbergii in recirculating system ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
Growing ponds for the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii are most of the time far from the seat and good quality fresh or sea water may also be in short supply seasonally. With an open system with water exchange every day the hatcheries have to be located near the sea whereas closed systems allow to set free from environmeneal conditions, and have been developed in Tahiti (Centre Océanologique du Pacifique) in collaboration with the ORERO (Office de la Recherche et de l'Exploitation des Ressources Océaniques formerly Fisheries Service). The development and the use of a recirculation system for larval culture of freshwater prawn is described. Biological and economical results are presented. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Algal food cultures at the centre océanologique du Pacifique ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
The CENTRE OCEANOLOCIQUE DU PACIFIQUE (cap), a laboralory of the french agency CENTRE NATIONAL POUR L'EXPLOITATlON DES OCEANS (CNEXO), is located at Vairao in the southern part of TAHITI island, French Polynesia. Most of the island is surrounded with a coral reef delimitating a lagoon. Around the COP, the lagoon forms a NW-SE basin, 40 m of maximum depth, fed in oceanic water by the combing of the open-sea swell over the barrier reef, so that the renewal rate of the lagoon water is once every day or every second day according to the strength of the waves. Under those conditions, the sea water pumped at the COP offers similar features to the superficial oceanic water : annual temperature range 25.5 - 3O.1° C ; annual salinity range 34.2 - 36.5 ppt ; poor...

Elevage larvaire et production de naissain de Crassostrea gigas en milieu tropical ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
In order to develop oysters culture in the South Pacific Islands and especially in French Polynesia, trials for producing spats of C. gigas in controlled conditions were conducted at the Centre Oaéanologique du Pacifique of the CNEXO in Tahiti. Tropical water environment (high temperature all year round and low productivity) led to the development of particular technics fir maintaining the brood stock. During the larval rearing a locally isolated algae strain is used and antibiotics as preventive treatments are added. For settling, crushed shell is used giving free spat. This paper presents and discusses the results obtained in the experimental hatchery during four rearing series from September to November 1976, when about 250 000 spats were produced. The...

Recent innovations in cultivation of molluscs in french Polynesia ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
Until recently, mollusc production in French Polynesia was only based upon fishing, for local consumption of edible bivalves mainly the oyster Saccostrea cucullata and for the exportation of pearl-oyster shells. As a consequence of parasitism problems on local oysters, a mollusc program was initiated by developping hatchery technics on introduced species of edible bivalves, Saccostrea echinata and Perna viridis, and cultivation methods in specialyy fitted up areas. Concerning pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera the traditional shell production activity was recently reorganized to produce black culture pearls, inducing an increased demand of young implantable pearl-oysters. Hatchery spat production proved to be unsuccessful, and technics of collection and...

Equipements pour fabriquer des granules par voie humide destinés aux animaux marins ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
The purpose of feeding marine animaIs (shrimps and fish) has been examined by CNEXO in a tropical area (Tahiti, French Polynesia) fer developing aquaculture with intensive methods. A food pilot plant unit has been built in 1973 in order to make water-stable pellets. The rirst step is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of such a unit with an experimental alm. The method described in this paper originates from the adaptation of equipment which works by moistening different meals. An extrusion without steam occurs through a granulating press followed by a drying operation in a sun drier, which works with an addition al heat exchanger. Il seems as if the devices described are adaptable to food production for rish in temperate or warm-water, and a review...

Penaeid reared brood stock : closing the cycle ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
Three shrimp species, Penaeus monodon, P. stylirostris (Panama and Mexican strains) and P. vannamei have matured and spawned in captivity at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (COP) laboratory. The shrimp, originally stocked as juveniles or postlarvae, were reared to adult size in tanks and ponds and have completed the cycle: F3 generation for P. monodon, F2 for P. stylirostris (Panama strain) and P. vannamei and F1 for P. stylirostris (Mexican strain). Maturation occurs naturally under our rearing conditions or is induced by unilateral eyestalk ablation. Details are given on mating behavior, ovarian development, number of spawnings, egg viability and maintenance of captive brood stock. Partial results so far obtained for P. monodon and P. stylirostris...

Larval rearing and spat production of green mussel Mytilus viridis linnaeus in french Polynesia ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
To develop mussel culture in the South Pacific and especially in French Polynesia, trials for producing spat of Mytilus viridis were conducted at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (Cap) of the Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Océans (CNEXO) in Tahiti. Spawning is attained through thermal stimulation. Larval rearing is conducted in 800-liter cylindroconical tanks. Every two days the water is changed and antibiotics are added as a preventive treatment. Monochrysis lutheri and an Isochrysis locally isolated are used as food. Metarmorphosis and settlement are achieved between the 10th and 17th days. A 15 m3 tank supplied with flowing water from a shrimp rearing pond is used for the pre-growth. The marketable spat size (7-8 mm, 40 mg) is reached in...

Use of serum protein concentration optimize penaeid spawner quality ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
From June 1981 to September 1982, the serum protein concentration has been used as an index of shrimp's hea1th for P.monodon female selection in the maturation units at the COP (Vairao, Tahiti). Three lots were separated according to the food supply during the pregenitor's life and the spawning index (number of spawn per female and per month) was then monitored for each female. With a captive broodstock, a minimum serum protein concentration is needed for spawning ability. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Intensive larval culture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii : a cost study ArchiMer
AQUACOP.
Pilot scale larval culture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii began in Tahiti at the end of 1976. Since then, four batches of postlarvae (2.3 millions) have been produced. Operating expenses cost was $13-35/thousands postlarvae. Based on the results obtained from the pilot program, we can project the cost of a commercial scale hatchery producing 10 million postlarvae/ year at $12/1,000. This includes construction and equipment costs. Due to the high cost of living in Tahiti, this figure would undoubtedly be lower in many other regions. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
