De Nederlandse soorten van het dansvliegengeslacht Hilara (Diptera: Empididae) In deze studie wordt alle beschikbare informatie over het dansvliegengeslacht Hilara samengevat. Door kritisch literatuur-, collectie- en veldonderzoek werden 57 soorten voor de Nederlandse fauna vastgesteld, waarvan er hier maar liefst 13 voor de eerste maal gemeld worden. Zes van de 57 soorten zijn beschreven op basis van Nederlandse collectiemateriaal. Er zullen weinig insectengenera zijn waarvan meer dan 10% van de Nederlandse soorten uit Nederland beschreven zijn. Van elke soort wordt een verspreidingskaart gepresenteerd en, indien beschikbaar, informatie over vliegtijden en ecologie. Chrysotoxum fasciolatum and C. intermedium new for the Dutch fauna (Diptera: Syrphidae) The first records of Chrysotoxum intermedium Meigen, 1822 and Chrysotoxum fasciolatum (De Geer, 1776) for the Netherlands are given. Specimens of both species were collected at the Sint Pietersberg near Maastricht (province of Limburg) in 1991 and 1998, respectively. Information is given on the habitat preference of the adult flies. A key is provided for the species of Chrysotoxum occurring in the Benelux. Both species are likely migrants and there are probably no established populations in the Netherlands.

Keys are given to the European genera and species of the Pamphiliidae (Symphyta: Megalodontoidea). Ten species are added to the list of the Dutch Hymenoptera. New and rare flies for the Dutch fauna (Diptera) In this paper an overview is given of captures of rare and interesting Diptera, belonging to different families, mainly from the years 19941996. New and rare hoverflies for the Dutch fauna (Diptera: Syrphidae). Paragus albifrons (Fallén), P. bicolor (Fabricius), Sphegina verecunda Collin, Neoascia annexa (O.F. Müller), Callicera aenea (Fabricius), Cheilosia caerulescens (Meigen), C. chloris (Meigen), C. flavipes (Panzer), Chamaesyrphus scaevoides (Fallén), Xylota coeruleiventris Zetterstedt, Merodon rufus Meigen and Eristalis picea (Fallén) are recorded with full details for the first time from The Netherlands. Some of these species have been listed by other authors but without any details. Here additional notes are given on the distribution and biology of these twelve species as well as 49 other more or less rare species.

Ceriana vespiformis new to the Dutch fauna (Diptera: Syrphidae) Two Dutch specimens of the mediterranean hoverfly Ceriana vespiformis (Latreille, 1804) were discovered. These are the first known specimens of this species from The Netherlands. One male was collected in Best (province of Noord-Brabant) in 1978, and one female in Winterswijk (province of Gelderland) in 1980. Some information is given on the distribution and biology of the species, and a key is provided to the two Dutch species of the genus Ceriana. The possibility of mislabelling is considered not to be likely.

Rhagoletis indifferens, a new tephritid fly to the Dutch fauna (Diptera: Tephritidae) Rhagoletis indifferens is a North-American species which, in Europe, was known from Switzerland only. In August 1999 a specimen was caught with a Malaise-trap in a garden in Burgh (province of Zeeland). Later the larvae were found in the berries of Prunus serotina in the coastal dunes near Burgh. They were collected and raised. In June 2000 the first adult emerged. In August 2000 the adults were also found in the field.

Olbiosyrphus laetus, a hoverfly new for the Dutch fauna (Diptera: Syrphidae) The first record of Olbiosyrphus laetus (Fabricius, 1794) for the Netherlands is presented. The specimen was collected with a malaisetrap in the nature reserve ‘De Krang’ near Swartbroek (province of Limburg). Some information is provided on the habitat and biology. A key to the species of Xanthogramma and Olbiosyrphus occurring in the Netherlands is presented.

Ceratitis cosyra, an African fruitfly found in the Dutch province of Drenthe (Diptera: Tephritidae) A single specimen of Ceratitis (Ceratalaspis) cosyra (Walker, 1849) was collected near Papenvoort (utm ld4768) with a malaisetrap in the period 4-6 september 1993 (leg. L. Witmond). Up till now it was believed to be one of the few specimens of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824) collected in the field in the Netherlands. Re-examination of the specimen revealed it’s true identity. Both species are very similar except for the colour-pattern on the thorax which is illustrated for both species.

Interesting new records of hoverflies in TheNetherlands (Diptera: Syrphidae) The preliminary distribution atlas of the Dutch hoverflies (NJN 1998) marked the start of the Syrphidae recording scheme (1998-2002). This publication has proven to be a major stimulus for the study of this interesting group of flies. Many interesting new data from field and collection work have become known since 1998. In this paper a selection of published and unpublished records is summarized. At the end of the project all available knowledge on Dutch hoverflies will be compiled in the Dutch Syrphidae atlas.

The 'real' Brachyopa dorsata in the Netherlands after 39 years (Diptera: Syrphidae) The hoverfly Brachyopa dorsata Zetterstedt, 1837 was already mentioned for the Netherlands by Van Aartsen (1970), based on a specimen from 1968, which later proved to belong to B. panzeri Goffe, 1945. On April 21, 2007, a male B. dorsata was collected from the flowers of Prunus padus in the north-western part of the Veluwe. The locality is part of a large mixed forest complex, dominated by old beeches. This is the first record of B. dorsata for the Netherlands. The species was expected, for it is known from a small number of localities in adjacent parts of Germany.

The fruitfly Tephritis acanthiophilopsis new for the Netherlands (Diptera: Tephritidae) The first record of Tephritis acanthiophilopsis Hering, 1938 for the Netherlands is presented. A single male was collected with a malaisetrap on the ‘Stampersplaat’, a shoal in the ‘Grevelingen’, just north of the town of Brouwershaven, province of Zeeland. The genus Tephritis Latreille, 1804 is characterized and the difference between the two Dutch species of the cometa-group is illustrated.

The rearing of the botfly Cephenemyia auribarbis (Diptera: Oestridae) After several failures we finally succeeded in rearing botflies Cephenemyia from third-instar larvae. From a red deer shot at 13 March 1998 about one hundred larvae of Cephenemyia auribarbis (Meigen, 1824) were collected. Ten individuals reached the pupal stage. After 22 days, one fullgrown male died in the pupa, and two males emerged and lived for 17 and 18 days respectively. This is one of the few recorded succesful attempts to rear botflies.

Stemonocera cornuta and Terellia virens removed from the Dutch list (Diptera: Tephritidae) The species Stemonocera cornuta (Scopoli, 1772) and Terellia virens (Loew, 1846) have both erroneously been recorded from the Netherlands. The sole specimen of S. cornuta turned out to be collected as a pupa in Germany and reared in Holland. Re-examination of the Dutch specimens of T. virens by Bernhard Merz showed they were small specimens of T. serratulae.

The robberfly Stichopogon elegantulus new to the Netherlands (Diptera: Asilidae) A female of the robberfly Stichopogon elegantulus (Wiedemann in Meigen 1820) was discovered in a malaise trap in Papenvoort (Drenthe, the Netherlands) on June, 22th, 1998. It is the first record for the Netherlands. The capture is odd because it is far north from the nearest sites where the species occurs, along the river Rhine in the southern parts of Germany. In Germany, the species extends its range northward. We expect, however, that the Dutch specimen was transported accidentally by man. There are no populations between our site and the sites in southern Germany, making it improbable that the range already extends so far north.

Sapyga similis not extinct in the Netherlands (Hymenoptera: Sapygidae) Sapyga similis was thought to have gone extinct in the Netherlands. In 2003 one female was found in malaisetrap material collected near Nunspeet, the Veluwe (province of Gelderland). It is argumented that Osmia uncinata, at least locally, is the host species of this kleptoparasitic wasp. A key is presented for the Dutch species of Sapyga and Sapygina.
