| The author introduces the use of a ‘synoptical key’ for the species of Asperula, Galium, Rubia and Sherardia occurring in the Netherlands. This key was proposed by LEENHOUTS (1966). The author agrees with Leenhouts that the synoptical key has certain advantages over the more commonly used ‘analytical keys’. For a full discussion of the form and advantages of the different types of keys, see the studies by Leenhouts. |

| Op p. 27 van deze aflevering stelt E.J. Weeda onder meer, dat de voorjaarssoorten in de in 1980 afgesloten tweede inventarisatieronde vaak onvolledig zijn ‘gehokt’. Dit is voor ons aanleiding geweest om de gebruikelijke zaterdagexcursies, georganiseerd door het Rijksherbarium en de Commissie voor het Floristisch Onderzoek van Nederland van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Botanische Vereniging, dit jaar eerder te starten dan in voorgaande jaren en speciale aandacht te wijden aan de voorjaarsflora. De overige zaterdagexcursies zullen in 1982 vooral daar worden gehouden, waar aanvullende gegevens node worden ontbeerd. | Een nieuwe desinfectiemethode voor herbaria. Droog organisch materiaal oefent een grote aantrekkingskracht uit op allerlei dierlijke organismen. Gedroogde planten, het herbarium, maken daarop geen uitzondering en worden met graagte door verschillende insektesoorten gegeten. Vooral de z.g. museumkevers worden nogal eens in collecties aangetroffen. Iedereen, die er een herbarium op na houdt, weet, dat regelmatige controle en desinfectie van zijn collectie noodzakelijk zijn. Het controleren van vele, soms duizenden of tienduizenden, exemplaren is een tijdrovend, zij het niet altijd onplezierig karweitje. | The common Rice grass in the Netherlands proved to be Spartina anglica C. E. Hubbard instead of S. x townsendii H. & J. Groves as has been cited in Dutch literature. In less than 55 years after its introduction in 1924 S. anglica succeeded in almost completely crowding out the original S. maritima (Curt.) Fern. According to C. E. Hubbard, who kindly revised several of our specimens, only 4 collections belong to the hybrid S. x townsendii, 2 to a triple-hybrid? S. anglica x (S. x townsendii) and one to an unknown Spartina-hybrid. |

| Een nieuwe vindplaats van Genista germanica L. op de Veluwe. Op 2 juni 1980 werden op de Veluwe, bij Elspeet, twee planten van de Duitse brem (Genista germanica) gevonden. Zij werden aangetroffen op een brede, met struikheide en varens begroeide strook tussen twee bospercelen, waarin een fietspad ligt, tezamen met Genista anglica en Sarothamnus scoparius. Op het door R.W.J.M. van der Ham vervaardigde kaartje in de Atlas van de Nederlandse Flora 1 (MENNEMA c.s., 1980) staan twee groene blokjes aangegeven in dezelfde omgeving als waar bovenvermelde vondst werd gedaan. Het ene blokje betreft een vindplaats ten zuiden van die bij Elspeet (in het Soerense veld), het andere een vindplaats ten noorden daarvan (bij Gortel). De vondst van 2 juni betekent dus niet... |

| Hoewel mag worden gehoopt, dat de lezer daarvan niets of heel weinig zal merken, wijkt deel 10 in vele opzichten af van de vorige delen van Gorteria. In de eerste plaats hebben wij gemeend om diverse redenen naar een andere drukker uit te moeten zien. Dit zal zowel op het uiterlijk van het tijdschrift als op de inhoud van weinig invloed zijn. Wel vonden wij er aanleiding in om een boom, die hoe langer hoe dikker werd, te kappen: de opsomming op de titelpagina van de acht instituten, waarvan de medewerkers volgens een bepaalde afspraak in Gorteria kunnen publiceren. De afspraak zelf is onveranderd gebleven. |

| The commodity group Exudates (defined as the fluids that ooze out of a wound of a tree) is divided into three groups of substances: Resins, Latex, and Gums. Resins, usually mixes of terpenes, are primarily used in paints and varnishes. Latex, of which the most important is rubber, is used in car tyres, engineering components and consumers goods, including chewing gum. The main components of latex are polyisoprenes and resins. Vegetable gums consist of mixtures of polysaccharides and are often used in cosmetics, soaps, and in food products as stabiliser or emulsifier. For the field botanist exudate is a useful character. | This book intends (according to the preface) to afford at once a review, a general outline of what has been accomplished, and a set of signposts for the future. It attempts to do so in three sections on Origin and Diversification of Primitive Land Plants (4 papers), Origin and Diversification of Angiosperms (6 papers), and Speciation and Mechanisms of Diversification (5 papers). In a sense our discipline is in a state of change that could be called revolutionary, rapidly acquiring new facts. In this situation the need is felt for a survey of what has been accomplished and what the future may bring. This slim volume serves as a prime example of an attempt to do so. | Once again a new North American Juncus-species has been found in the Netherlands. In 1972 J. canadensis J. Gay ex Laharpe was discovered in the southern part of the country near Reusel in the province of N.-Brabant (ADEMA, 1974) in connection with a record from Belgium, where the species occurs abundantly now in 6 hour-squares (D’HOSE, 1976). In 1974 J. ensifolius Wikstr. was found in the northern part of the country, viz. along the canalized Sleener stream near Emmen in the province of Drente. The discovery of this new rush for the Netherlands does not elucidate the problem of the origin of North American species in Europe. |

| Teucrium scordium in de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. Onder de naam Nepeta cataria werd in 1856 door F. A. Hartsen aan de „Waterleiding bij Leiduin” een exemplaar van Teucrium verzameld, dat aanvankelijk werd gedetermineerd als T. chamaedrys (VAN OOSTSTROOM in Gorteria 4, 1968, p. 44). Toen ik onlangs het materiaal van deze soort nog eens doornam, viel het mij op dat dit exemplaar veel sterker behaard was dan alle overige T. chamaedrys-exemplaren en dat de bladen zittend waren (bij T. chamaedrys gesteeld). Een nieuwe determinatie wees dan ook al spoedig uit, dat dit exemplaar niet tot T. chamaedrys, doch tot T. scordium behoort! De oude opgave van T. chamaedrys in de A.
