Between 1969-1980, the annual shrimp catch ranged from 585 to 21116 tonnes. The percentage of shrimp in the total catch showed a sharp decline from 75% in 1969 to 18% in 1979 while the fish by-catch rose from 25% to 82. The shrimps were abundant during the rains (April to September). The number of shrimpers and effort rose by 338% and 337% respectively. The mean annual catch per unit effort (cpue) ranged between 0,196 in 1972 and 0.365 (tonne per day out of (port) in 1975. Japan, United States of America, and Britain are the main importers of Nigerian shrimps. |
